Community Meeting #2 Slideshow Presentation

Editor's Notes

  1. After this initial overview presentation, you’ll have the opportunity to go to the corridor of your choice, learn about the alternatives and provide very specific feedback. You’ll have an opporunity to cycle thorugh to all three corridors if you like. The goal here is not to, as my friend Jim Meko might say, “divide and conquer…the goal is to get focused and detailed feedback. Afterward, we’ll have an opportunity for big group discussion, and we do want to hear what you have to say.
  2. The Transportation plan is key to Implementing the Eastern Neighborhoods land use plansHuge study area, but we are trying to develop a few specific transportation project that can be funded and builtEN TRIPS is a companion to numerous other transportation projects planning transportation investments in the study area (Market Street, Central Subway, Western SOMA plan, Mission Streetscape, etc, etc.)
  3. Select a small number of transportation corridors where our team can make the biggest contribution.Focus on SF’s major transportation networks – at the Eastern Neighborhoods scale.Folsom/Howard (5th – 11th)7th/8th (Market – Harrison)16th (Potrero – 7th)These corridors were selected for a combination of reasons:They will experience significant growth or change as part of the land use plansThey are similar to other streets in the study area – the lessons learned on these streets can easily be applied to others. These are the streets the community was most interested in after our last round of outreach.
  4. After tonight we’ll be selecting an alternative for further development in each corridor. A large part of this selection will be the feedback we hear tonight. We recognize that not all the issues in EN can be captured in these three corridors. SFMTA will be leading another component of the study which will look at recurring transportation challenges. They will be developign a toolkit for addressing those challenges throughout the study area. Finally, we’ll be looking at funding and implementation options to move these projects forward and will prepare a final report by the end of the year.
  5. These projects aim to improve neighborhood quality while also addressing citywide policy goalsThis study was designed to provide an analytical framework that looked at the impacts of design options on all modes and more broadly through the network, so that what we end up with is something the city is willing to implement.
  6. Superfast run through. Don’t worry about understanding the details on the cross sections…much more info at the stations. We considered ten alternatives. The ones we’ve brought for your consideration all improve pedestrian conditons, and reduce travel lanes, calm traffic, add mid-block crossings, improve bicycle facilities, and maintain transit operations. If your favorite alternative is not one of the primary ones we are showing tonight, don’t dispair….chances are we’ve looked at your alternative or some version of it that we can bring back into the mix. If we’ve eliminated something you love for good reason, we’ll be able to tell you why, and you’ll be able to tell us what w might have overlooked.
  7. All Folsom/Howard alternatives: include mid-block crosswalks corner bulb-outs buffered bike lanes, or “cycletracks” preserve most parking and loading reduce # of traffic lanes and provide for slower calmer traffic but maintain some capacity for traffic so that the traffic doesn’t gridlock and transit can functionWe know that the Folsom Street fair is a very important event on the street and we’ve designed these based on our limited understanding of the fair’s needs, but we’re glad that representatives from the fair are here tonight and we’re looking forward to working with you.We did this in a number of ways including:Maintaining the oneway system but a much calmer and narrower street with significant improvemetns for bike and pedThis alternative:- keeps Folsom & Howard 1-Way- but only 2 thru lanes (+ turn lanes)- this leaves room for wider sidewalks- much shorter crosswalks- and wide cycletracks- plus median spaceMuni would continue to use Folsom & HarrisonMaintaining one-way travel makes it easy to optimize signal progression for slow, steady vehicle travel that is comfortable and safe for pedestrians.Pearl district
  8. A two way option which allows for transit consolidation on Folsom and provides for some improvements for pedestrians and bikes but less than in the one way example. This alternative:- makes Folsom & Howard 2 lanes 1 way, 1 lane the other way- widens sidewalks on one side- includes narrower cycletracks- Muni could use Folsom both ways
  9. A hybrid options which makes Folsom 2 way but keeps Howard 1 way, and puts the bikes on Howard Street, transit on Folsom.- makes Folsom 2-way, but keeps Howard 1-way- Folsom would have much wider sidewalks- Muni could use Folsom both ways
  10. This is Howard under this alternative- on Howard, there would be a 2-way cycletrack plus median space Howard does not provide as direct a connection to other bike routes as Folsom cyclists could still ride on Folsom, but in traffic
  11. Looked at 10 alternatives, which you may notice have a lot in common with the Folsom Howard options, because the ROW measurements are the same. What we’re recommending for further study is different, and might be different depending on what you choose for Folsom/Howard.
  12. Both alternatives for 7th & 8th:- Maintain the current one way configuration – we did not identify 2 way configuration that did not result in gridlock backing up across Market Street. include mid-block crosswalks include corner bulb-outs preserve most parking and loading reduce # of traffic lanes to 3 in each direction the 19-Polk would continue to operate on 7th & 8thThe two alternatives each reduce the number of lanes from 4 to 3, but one provides more space for a separated bikeway and one provides more space for pedestrians.
  13. This alternative: widens sidewalks on both sides includes a bike lane
  14. Looked at 9 options that were focused around transit enhancement, given the transit volumes in this corridor and the fact that the 22 is being consolidated onto 16th Street. This is the only EW street connecting Mission to Mission Bay and is a major eastern neighborhoods transit priority. All provide transit priority and enhanced pedammenitiesAll restrict left turnsMain differences are in the amount of separated transitway and the treatment of bikes.
  15. All 16th St alternatives: reduce # of traffic lanes from 3 to 2 prohibit left turnsprovide dedicated lanes for Muni high-platform stops for level boarding with extra amenities include corner bulb-outsRemove at least some parking in the corridor by relying on the parking on the side streets for parking and loading. This alternative: provides a dedicated center transitway, similar to what’s being proposed for Geary Blvd. puts continuous bike lanes on 17th (and improves those lanes - bike lanes are already on 17th to west) includes much wider sidewalks leaves room for parking and loading “bays” on 16th
  16. This alternative: keeps bike lanes on 16th this means sidewalks can be widened, but not as much no room for parking and loading bays
  17. This alternative: Landscaped median with Muni lanes next to curb cars could use bus lanes to turn right, so buses would sometimes be blocked there are wider sidewalksbut no parking or loading baysCould trade off some parking with the median
  18. This workshop was advertised to end at 8, but we hope you can join us until 8:30 to allow additional time for larger-group discussion.
  19. Based on the feedback you give tonight and additional consultantion with stakehodler and city agencies, the project team will pick a design to refine further. The project team will create a funding and implementation plan.We hope to have a completed plan for you to review by the end of the year.SHOW OF HANDS FOR INTEREST.THREE? GROUPS and ROTATE
