According to a survey by the National Council on Economic Education
Social media has changed much about the US economy in that economic information is more accessible than ever before, and these platforms, since their inception, have become multi-million or even multi-billion dollar companies. Their roles in the advertising/marketing process has made these platforms massive pieces of the US and Global economies.
The US economic entities are structured form the top down starting with: The Department (Lead by Cabinet members); Carry out the day to day admin of the federal government. Bureaus and Offices are a result of departments needing to delegate specific tasks that require a lot of man power. In the above example at the top we have the Department of Commerce. Followed by the bureaus; Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Naitonal Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And lastly, Offices: Office of General Counsel, Office of Inspector General, Office of Policy and Strategic Planning, and Office of the White House Liason.
While these aren’t the only Departments tied to US EI most people agree that these 4 are the most important: The Departments of Treasury, Commerce, Agriculture, and Labor.
These independent agencies are separate from the government entities discussed before in that they exist outside of the Federal Executive Departments… These agencies also have rule-making and regulatory powers that are insulated from the president. They are usually not involved in criminal cases. First we have the Securities Exchange Commission, which was created in the midst of the great depression (bank crash of 1929). They are responsible for most of the regulations and laws surrounding securities in the US; but, in recent years they are criticized for their extremely slow reaction to crypto currency.
And the next one is basically the one that rules us all at the moment… The Federal Reserve; this is the central banking system of the us and started with 3 main purposes:
maximizing employment, stabilizing prices, and moderating long-term interest rates. As the global economy became more complicated the role of the Federal Reserve has been expanded managing banks and providing financial services to foreign official institutions.
The US Congress (which includes the House and Senate) are often referred to as the Wallet or Checkbook of the Country. This is because the budget for all federal entities must be voted on and approved by both the house and senate. That being said, this has cause problems when it comes to things like Insider Trading and Lobbying, or even funding the government. The members are often briefed on economic on-goings of not just the government but also large corporations. They play a major role in the corporate EI because government regulations have a have the potential to create problems for corporations…
ALL Federal departments report directly to the Director of National Intelligence. This is currently Avril Haines. The reason this is important is best captured by a quote from a declassified DOD document titled “Economic Intelligence: A Key to Economic Power.”
Again, this is from a declassified DOD document that was originally presented during the presidency of Bill Clinton. With the end of the Cold War insight the US government had already started shifting form largely military based intelligence to more economic intelligence. Today, these two terms are nearly synonymous. The US government deduced that the fall of the Soviet Union was two-pronged:- Stagnant Economy mixed with
- Bloated military spending
Banks… So, American or not you have had to fill out self-certification forms. The thing that is rarely mentioned is that one of those forms is specifically for the US gov to ensure that you aren’t a US citizen. And, If your bank tries to stop the US government. Treasury department imposes a 30% withholding tax on the bank causing them to lose billions of dollars. (Reminder: Every bank in the world uses USD for international trade). Every bank that services US clients is required to provide the US with banking reports, not just for americans but for all of the people (citizen or not) that bank at provides service for.Trump and Musk are real world examples of the blurred lines between corporate EI and government EIBoth of them have close links to perceived threats to the US and their personal finances and the finances of their companies are closely watched by the US gov to ensure they are a threat to the country.
Lastly, recently OPEC and more specifically Saudi Arabia have decided to decrease their production of oil. Obviously a decision that will have lasting impacts on the global economy… THe US responded by saying that it would no longer provide weapons and training to the Saudi military. Basically threatening to abandon it in the middle of its ongoing conflict with Iran. A great example of military and economic intelligence .
Earlier in this report I talked about the importance of tech/social media companies to citizen EI. But, they are also extremely important to government EI. THis is because while manufacturing and even sales may be largely based outside of the US. Profits still end up in the US and the government is aware that it must insure that these companies that make up large portions of the countries GDP. The US patent office is even know to assist companies quickly complete the US patent process so that they may more quickly complete the process in other countries ensuring that more global profits end up in the US.
