Management
Acceleration
Programme
Talent is just the start
1
The key to a successful career
is getting the transitions right,
all the way to the top.
INSEAD has four general
management programmes,
designed to help executives –
and their companies – through
the most challenging transitions,
complete with the international
twist that’s made our reputation.
But let’s face it. Getting that
important transition of all.
Hence the Management
Acceleration Programme.

With at least five years of work experience,
Management Acceleration Programme participants
are rising stars. But they can’t continue to rise without
the right support. True talent craves learning. And the
transition to management needs careful development.
That’s why it’s so essential to take time out and learn.
To learn from the best minds in the business. To learn
from an international peer group. To learn about
yourself. Whether you’ve recently been promoted
or you’re looking forward to your first true management
role, it’s imperative to get new perspectives, new
tools and new analytical frameworks.
Yet it’s also clear that time is a luxury at this crucial
stage – for your career and for your company.
That’s where the Management Acceleration Programme
comes in. With INSEAD’s support, talented, promising,
ambitious new managers learn how to capitalise on
their ‘high potential’ in just three weeks.
However, the programme is only the beginning of the
story. People may come to INSEAD to smooth a career
transition, but they return to work transformed – and
ready to keep on transforming the people, processes
and products around them. Time and time again,
participants say that INSEAD’s richly diverse learning
experience surpasses their highest expectations.
It inspires and informs. It harnesses talent. It even
changes lives. Most importantly, it helps to change
companies. The impact is immediate.
But the story doesn’t end here, either. A manager
whose career is accelerated at INSEAD has many
more successful transitions to look forward to.
From transition
to transformation
– in three
intensive weeks
44
First, we offer breadth.
It’s by looking at the bigger picture that the important
details suddenly snap into focus. That’s the essence of
our general management approach. We integrate your
own business experience into a wider perspective that
encompasses leadership, strategy, finance, marketing,
accounting and operations, and much more besides.
— pages 12 & 13
We’re able to do this thanks to the sheer breadth of
outlook at INSEAD. Our professors form one of the
largest and most diverse business-school faculties
in the world. It’s not just that they’re from different
countries and different fields of expertise. They also
come from many varied schools of thought and are
world authorities in their fields, on the cutting edge of
research.
— pages 16 to 19
But the diversity doesn’t stop there. It extends to our
participants. When we say diverse, we’re not just
talking about the number of nationalities, industry
sectors or skill sets. We mean that there’s no single
dominant culture or typical profile in an INSEAD
classroom. Sharing this wealth of experiences through
group work and classroom discussions multiplies your
viewpoints, your understanding, your solutions.
— pages 20 & 21
The upshot? The Management Acceleration Programme
challenges your assumptions. It broadens your
perspectives more than you’d ever have thought
possible. It gives you a ready-made international
network. And that’s what gives you the confidence and
creativity to be a more effective manager.
Last but not least, INSEAD’s scale of operations means
that you also have a broad choice about when, where
and how to do the three-week programme. It runs four
times a year in two different formats, with the option of
learning in both Europe and Asia.
— page 25
It’s no secret
how we go about
transforming
high potential
into high impact
Accelerating your
career across
three dimensions.
1
55
Second, we provide depth.
We do more than broaden your outlook. Most of all, we
deepen your insights about yourself. The progamme’s
leadership and personal development components,
designed and delivered by INSEAD’s renowned Global
Leadership Centre, are a unique opportunity to gain
360-degree feedback from colleagues at work and
on the programme. At the same time, group coaching
exercises take your self-understanding to new levels.
Ultimately, you return to work with a more profound
grasp of who you are and your potential as a leader.
You’re also able to see this in an international context,
with a deeper understanding of how to work with
people from all cultures.
— page 14
Why does this matter so much? Again, because it’s all
designed to enhance your performance and increase
your contribution.
Third, through greater depth and breadth
comes growth.
Management Acceleration Programme participants
all report that they return to the office as stronger
people and more accomplished professionals. Broader
outlooks and deeper insights bring personal and
professional growth – which translates into immediate
impact back at work. And that’s the most important
transformation of all.
Immediate impact is just the start, though. The learning
remains, along with the INSEAD network, helping you
and your business grow and develop for many years
to come.
But don’t take it from us. Listen to the participants
and representatives of their companies. It’s their
Management Acceleration Programme stories, on the
next few pages, all of them so different, that really count.
— pages 6 & 11
And then we’ll let the facts about the programme
– its content, its learning process, its faculty and its
participants – speak for themselves.

“It was business transition that brought me to INSEAD…
but I ended up with a major promotion – a big
professional transition too.
It all started six years ago, when I joined Publicis as an
intern. Even though I was a law graduate, advertising
was my passion and in my blood. Eventually I worked
my way into strategic planning, which requires a very
broad outlook on our clients’ business. And then, the
company decided to move into digital advertising,
which meant the CEO was ready to sponsor
development activities.
I chose the Management Acceleration Programme
very carefully. It wasn’t just about INSEAD’s
international reputation. As I’d never studied business
formally, I felt I needed some broad foundations. But
I never realised it was possible to take in so much
over just three weeks. Although I came in search of
finance and accounting knowledge, I left with such
strong insights into strategy and people management,
not to mention a new perspective on my own field of
marketing. The way the knowledge is passed on is
incredible. For the first time in my adult life, I never felt
the need for a cigarette break!
Back in Lisbon, at Publicis I was promoted to head of
department almost immediately, reporting directly to
the CEO, bearing in mind a horizontal management
responsibility, which I divide with a colleague of mine.
The programme didn’t just give me the confidence in
myself. It also gave senior managers confidence in me.
In my case it was all about timing: the right programme
at the right time. I’m using a lot of the knowledge it gave
me every day – and still digesting the rest.
I’ve stayed close to my fellow participants, even though
we’re scattered all over the world. In fact we’re already
planning among ourselves to return to INSEAD for the
Advanced Management Programme!”

“It was my director who recommended the programme
to me. My manager did the programme a couple of
years back and was so enthusiastic that I just had to try
it for myself!
In my case, I was looking mainly for new insights
and an academic approach to business. The way the
Management Acceleration Programme combines this
with a more personal approach to growth made
it the perfect fit. I wasn’t prepared for how amazing the
experience turned out to be. It’s hard to convey the
high energy of those three weeks and the incredible
effect it has in such a short time. All I can say is that,
as the name suggests, it really did accelerate
my development.
The biggest revelation was the coaching. It was very
helpful to gain insight in how other people saw me
before the programme. Now that I see myself more
clearly, I have more tactics at my disposal for dealing
with people and problems.
Before I came to INSEAD, I was just go, go, go! I moved
too fast. Today, I create time each day to reflect on how
I’m doing things. I already see the benefits personally
and professionally. Just as importantly, I think I’ve
passed on a bit of INSEAD energy to my director – and
of course my line manager, who started it all. But this
time it was my turn to bring back the enthusiasm from
the Management Acceleration Programme!”

The curriculum
Depth, breadth…
and value creation.
This part of the programme
will teach you not simply how
to manage for value, but how
to lead for value. Above all, it
offers opportunities to develop
your personal leadership
abilities and explore the way
you work with others.
Leading within:
organisational behaviour
Companies, like all human
groups, are essentially people
in search of the best ways
of working together. And,
like all human groups, this
requires effective leadership.
Companies, however, require
unusually all-round leaders,
people who are skilled at
interpersonal relations and
communication but also adept
with broader structural and
cultural issues. Starting from
this premise, you’ll examine
topics such as:
— Leading individuals
(communication and
feedback)
— Working with teams and
leading them
— Organisational culture
— Leading organisational
change
Leading outside: strategy
Get to grips with the
fundamentals of strategic
analysis, including the latest
techniques. As well as
understanding how to compete
as a single company within a
single industry, learn how to
build and manage a portfolio of
businesses. Topics include:
— Analysis by industry, market
and competition
— Developing and sustaining
competitive advantage
— Changing the rules of the
game: Blue Ocean Strategy
— Strategic resources
and alliances
— Corporate expansion,
mergers and acquisitions
Set Your Leadership
Agenda (SYLA)
A hands-on exercise to draw
up your personal agenda for
leadership. It involves your
colleagues from work and the
programme in 360-degree
feedback and group coaching
designed to pinpoint your
strengths and weaknesses.
We take you on a learning
journey through all the parts
of a business which create,
capture and deliver value.
You soon arrive at the point
where you not only have a
broad perspective on business
but the ability to analyse
complex problems in each
area, regardless of your own
background.
Finance
Financial reporting is not
only required by law for
publicly traded firms, but is
also essential for instituting
management discipline. We
first help you to develop a
deep understanding of the
main financial statements,
their interactions, and their
key drivers. We then show
you how these rich sources
of information are used for
strategic decision making as
well as for performance
monitoring and management.
Topics include:
— Managing liquidity
— Valuation and
long-term decisions
— Investment
— Requirements of the
company’s strategy
— Constraints of the
financial markets

Integrate and
reintegrate
Management accounting
The availability of
unbiased financial and
operational data is
central to a wide range of
management responsibilities,
including strategic decision
making and performance
management. We’ll show
you how some widely used
management accounting
systems often mislead
managers, and provide you
with tools to help you identify
information that really is
relevant. We’ll cover areas
such as:
— Classification, behaviour
and use of management
accounting data
— Control systems
Marketing
Successful marketing is all
about developing a coherent
and systematic approach. From
reviewing the most important
issues to practising qualitative
and quantitative analysis, we
develop your ability to make
structured marketing decisions
in situations that initially seem
totally unstructured.
Topics may include
the following:
— Marketing strategy
and the marketing mix
— Communications
— Channels of distribution
— Pricing and product policy
Operations and supply
chain management
While strategy is about
direction setting, and
finance about performance
management, operations and
supply chain management is
about execution. We’ll discuss
the key challenges to value
creation in a supply network,
but also introduce coordinating
initiatives for value capture in
a decentralised organisation.
Issues typically include:
— Value creation – breaking
the cost-service trade-off
— Value capture – aligning
the network
— The role of technology
in synchronising the
supply chain ecosystem
Throughout the programme,
several ‘linking moments’ help
you to integrate its various
parts into one whole, value-
creating perspective. But the
final chapter explicitly connects
everything you’ve learnt over
the previous weeks, preparing
you for immediate impact on
your return to the office.
Competitive
business simulation
This powerful, two-and-a-half-
day session allows you to live
the challenging decisions
of a manager leading an
entrepreneurial firm. Under
the expert guidance of INSEAD
faculty, you grow your business
from a small local company
into a mature international
organisation, competing with
your fellow participants to win
contracts and market share.
It’s a one-off opportunity that
leaves you buzzing with energy
and ideas for the real-life
challenges to come.

After nearly half a century
of educating managers, we
at INSEAD know that simply
passing on knowledge isn’t
enough. Our programmes
stand out because we
challenge assumptions
– providing insights that lead to
innovation and impact.
Dynamic and diverse learning
— Thought-provoking lectures
to grasp the latest thinking
and the most complex
concepts
— Interactive case studies
based on real-life
business dilemmas
— Group work that enables
you to learn from
experiences very different
to your own
— 360-degree tools developed
here at INSEAD to meet
your precise needs
— Group coaching, again
using our unique
INSEAD Global Leadership
Centre (IGLC) approach
— Simulations to test your
combined skills and
knowledge in a highly
competitive yet risk-free
environment
— Hands-on, outdoor team
exercises – learning
by doing
We also acknowledge that
you’ll learn as much from
each other as you do from
our faculty. That’s why the
programme is built around
teamwork in a variety
of groups. By sharing
experiences with professors
and participants, you’ll focus
diverse and brilliant minds
on your day-to-day business
issues. This sharing continues
beyond the classroom in
lunches, breaks and social
activities, all designed to
facilitate contact and exchange.
And yes, we have the humility
to admit that we learn from
you too. INSEAD thrives on a
unique meeting of minds that
builds bridges between theory
and practice.
Continuous or modular
Depending on your needs
and timing, you can choose to
complete the programme over
three continuous weeks on our
Europe Campus in France or
in two separate sessions, with
the first two weeks on our Asia
Campus in Singapore and
the final week on our Europe
Campus in Fontainebleau.
Either way, you’ll cover the
same wide-ranging curriculum.
Online platform
A few weeks before the
programme starts you’ll
receive a login and password
for the dedicated online
platform. This will give you
further information, as well as
the schedule and preparatory
reading to download. You’ll
also have access to profiles
of your fellow participants.
That’s because the
Management Acceleration
Programme is much more
than a course – it’s also a
community.
Follow-up
The online platform keeps the
community connected long
after the programme is over.
But, as well as a networking
medium, the platform is a
continuous learning tool. It
provides access to INSEAD’s
multimedia Knowledge site
and helps to ensure that your
professional and personal
growth never stops. INSEAD’s
unique approach to group
coaching doesn’t finish with
the programme either. After
100 days, there’s a follow-up
session by phone to cement
your learning and support your
continued impact at work.

The faculty
Great minds don’t
think alike.
All the breadth and depth of the programme is personified in its faculty. INSEAD’s professors
represent many cultures, many disciplines, many perspectives. At the same time, they’re
acknowledged world experts in their own particular fields – and outstanding teachers.
Unlike many schools, we make
sure that our own highly rated
professors represent the vast
majority of the faculty on our
General Management
Programmes. As a professional
body, INSEAD’s professors are
a diverse collection of great
minds that think anything but
alike. That’s what makes the
Management Acceleration
Programme such a great
learning experience. But they
all share a deep understanding
of business – and a
commitment to helping you
do it better.

Management Acceleration
Programme participants
are so diverse that it’s hard
to generalise about them,
however, they tend to fit the
following profile.
The right people for
the right programme
— At least five years’ work
experience
— Strong track record in their
own functional area
— In a role with some
operating, corporate or
management responsibility
— Graduates of any subject,
including business, but
unlikely to have a
postgraduate business
degree, such as an MBA
— Able to exchange views,
listen and learn through
the medium of English
If you match this profile and
have the support of your line
manager or human resources
department, we encourage
you to apply using the
downloadable application form
at www.insead.edu/executives/
map.cfm
Then leave it to us to make
sure that you’re a member
of a class with approximately
25 nationalities and an
even greater diversity of
backgrounds. We’ll also ensure
that you all have a comparable
level of skills and experiences.
From candidates
to community
INSEAD provides the
opportunity to meet and stay in
touch with fellow participants
through the programme’s
online platform, but the real
sense of community comes
from the class itself. Some
participant networks are still
in touch decades after coming
to INSEAD. Others have
even developed businesses
together. There’s something
about the cross-cultural
relationships formed at INSEAD
that makes them particularly
strong and enduring.
From participants to alumni
As well as becoming part of
your own class community,
you leave the Management
Acceleration Programme as
a full member of the INSEAD
alumni community. Only
graduates of our world-famous
MBA, Executive MBA and PhD
programmes, together with
selected former Executive
Education participants, are
eligible for membership in this
elite worldwide network.
Today we have 39,200 alumni
in around 160 countries,
many with very active
National Alumni Associations.
Alumni benefit from lifelong
networking, learning and
professional development
opportunities, including
regional events, refresher
programmes and reduced
rates for all Executive
Education at INSEAD.

Other business schools may
say they’re international,
but INSEAD has been
international from the outset.
Fifty years later, we’re the only
leading business school to have
a two-campus, two-continent
structure that spans Asia and
Europe. We’ve also become
one of the largest of the world’s
graduate business schools and
now have sites in Abu Dhabi,
Israel and the United States.
Over the years we’ve become
one of the largest of the world’s
graduate business schools. But
we’ve retained our fundamental
difference. That is, there’s no
dominant culture at INSEAD.
Indeed, this has become
more and more important,
as business itself has gone
increasingly global.
Executive Education
at INSEAD
Our stated purpose as The
Business School for the World
is to bring together people
cultures and ideas from around
the world to change lives and
transform organisations. And
through Executive Education
we can help transform your
organisation. In fact, today
we’re as famous for our
Executive Education as we
are for our pioneering one-
year MBA degree. We offer
one of the largest range of
open-enrolment programmes
for executives in the world.
We also provide company-
specific executive education,
tailored exactly to individual
organisations’ needs.
Facilities that
facilitate learning
Both our campuses provide
ideal settings for learning –
but in very different ways. The
idyllic forest of Fontainebleau
in France provides a calm
space for reflection just an hour
from Paris. Meanwhile, our city
location in Singapore taps into
the energy of a thriving world
business capital.
Despite offering two very
different perspectives, our
two campuses benefit from
the same high standard of
facilities. These include the
Plessis Mornay Learning Space
in Fontainebleau, designed
specifically for executive
education, and a state-of-the-
art extension in Singapore.
Comfortable accommodation
on or near campus, as well
as on-site restaurants, bars,
bookshops and extensive
IT facilities complete the
experience – and help to make
the learning process even
more effective.

Why should I choose INSEAD above
other business schools?
We think our diversity is our
distinguishing feature. INSEAD is
probably the only school where
you’ll find 25 nationalities in the
same class. And it’s certainly
the only school where no single
one of those 25 nationalities will
predominate. That said, our faculty
are among the best (and most
diverse) in the world too.
Why is diversity such a big deal?
The obvious answer is that business
is more international than ever
before. But it’s the subtle answer
that’s much more powerful. With
so many different national and
cultural perspectives to learn from,
you really will start to see things
differently. By challenging your
old assumptions, you’ll become
aware of new possibilities and start
to understand how very differently
people think.
“By challenging
your old
assumptions,
aware of new
What’s the difference between the
modular and continuous versions?
The content is almost identical.
However, we think it makes sense
to spend a little more time on Asian
issues during the two weeks of
the modular version that’s spent
in Singapore. We’d recommend
the modular version to those who
have a special interest in Asia
or who are looking for an even
more international experience
than INSEAD usually offers. Please
note that the modules aren’t
interchangeable.
Three weeks seems like a big
commitment – can I afford so much
time away?
You need three weeks to gain the
distance for reflection on your work
and yourself. We also need that time
to cover the ambitious curriculum.
But the modular version offers a
little more flexibility. And the
consecutive version runs three
times a year, enabling you to fit
the programme into your hectic
schedule.
How do I know which INSEAD
General Management Programme
is right for me?
It’s all about experience. And
focus. Management Acceleration
Programme participants generally
have at least five years’ work
experience, while International
Executive Programme participants
have eight to ten years’
management experience.
I already have a business degree
– will the programme cover the
same old ground?
Provided you’ve worked for a
couple of years since graduating
and accumulated some real-life
management puzzles of your own,
the Management Acceleration
Programme is the perfect refresher
course. It will also bring you right
up-to-date with the latest thinking.
Is the emphasis on soft leadership
skills or hard knowledge, tools and
frameworks?
To be successful in business
you need to balance your soft
skills with your fundamental
business understanding. So the
programme seeks to enhance
your understanding across the
full business spectrum, while
also developing your leadership
capabilities. It’s such an integrated
programme that soft and hard skills
are intertwined and built together.
Do I have to attend the sessions on
my own area of expertise?
Absolutely. First, you might gain a
new perspective on your field. And
second, you’ll have the valuable
experience of passing on your
expertise to classmates from other
disciplines. It’s by sharing insights
that people learn at INSEAD, as well
as by listening to the wisdom of our
faculty of course.
So what do I do next?
You’re talented, motivated,
ambitious and hungry to learn. And
you’ve read this far. So the next
step is to apply using the form at
www.insead.edu/executives/map.
cfm. When you need INSEAD again,
for the transition into general
management or an even more
senior post, we’ll be there for you
and your company. But for now, let’s
accelerate your management career
together…

INSEAD Executive Education MAP Career Acceleration

  • 1. Executive Education General Management 2010/2011 Management Acceleration Programme Talent is just the start
  • 2.
  • 3. 1 The key to a successful career is getting the transitions right, all the way to the top. INSEAD has four general management programmes, designed to help executives – and their companies – through the most challenging transitions, complete with the international twist that’s made our reputation. But let’s face it. Getting that important transition of all. Hence the Management Acceleration Programme. Management Acceleration Programme International Executive Programme Asian International Executive Programme Advanced Management Programme Talent is just the start… 1
  • 4. the participant’s organisation new knowledge, skills and self-awareness – ready for — A more effective manager – focussed on creating value and providing leadership — perspective – taking in not only also the longer term — An executive with an international — An injection of knowledge and enthusiasm for the entire team – the INSEAD spirit is contagious
  • 5. 33 With at least five years of work experience, Management Acceleration Programme participants are rising stars. But they can’t continue to rise without the right support. True talent craves learning. And the transition to management needs careful development. That’s why it’s so essential to take time out and learn. To learn from the best minds in the business. To learn from an international peer group. To learn about yourself. Whether you’ve recently been promoted or you’re looking forward to your first true management role, it’s imperative to get new perspectives, new tools and new analytical frameworks. Yet it’s also clear that time is a luxury at this crucial stage – for your career and for your company. That’s where the Management Acceleration Programme comes in. With INSEAD’s support, talented, promising, ambitious new managers learn how to capitalise on their ‘high potential’ in just three weeks. However, the programme is only the beginning of the story. People may come to INSEAD to smooth a career transition, but they return to work transformed – and ready to keep on transforming the people, processes and products around them. Time and time again, participants say that INSEAD’s richly diverse learning experience surpasses their highest expectations. It inspires and informs. It harnesses talent. It even changes lives. Most importantly, it helps to change companies. The impact is immediate. But the story doesn’t end here, either. A manager whose career is accelerated at INSEAD has many more successful transitions to look forward to. From transition to transformation – in three intensive weeks
  • 6. 44 First, we offer breadth. It’s by looking at the bigger picture that the important details suddenly snap into focus. That’s the essence of our general management approach. We integrate your own business experience into a wider perspective that encompasses leadership, strategy, finance, marketing, accounting and operations, and much more besides. — pages 12 & 13 We’re able to do this thanks to the sheer breadth of outlook at INSEAD. Our professors form one of the largest and most diverse business-school faculties in the world. It’s not just that they’re from different countries and different fields of expertise. They also come from many varied schools of thought and are world authorities in their fields, on the cutting edge of research. — pages 16 to 19 But the diversity doesn’t stop there. It extends to our participants. When we say diverse, we’re not just talking about the number of nationalities, industry sectors or skill sets. We mean that there’s no single dominant culture or typical profile in an INSEAD classroom. Sharing this wealth of experiences through group work and classroom discussions multiplies your viewpoints, your understanding, your solutions. — pages 20 & 21 The upshot? The Management Acceleration Programme challenges your assumptions. It broadens your perspectives more than you’d ever have thought possible. It gives you a ready-made international network. And that’s what gives you the confidence and creativity to be a more effective manager. Last but not least, INSEAD’s scale of operations means that you also have a broad choice about when, where and how to do the three-week programme. It runs four times a year in two different formats, with the option of learning in both Europe and Asia. — page 25 It’s no secret how we go about transforming high potential into high impact Accelerating your career across three dimensions. 1
  • 7. 55 Second, we provide depth. We do more than broaden your outlook. Most of all, we deepen your insights about yourself. The progamme’s leadership and personal development components, designed and delivered by INSEAD’s renowned Global Leadership Centre, are a unique opportunity to gain 360-degree feedback from colleagues at work and on the programme. At the same time, group coaching exercises take your self-understanding to new levels. Ultimately, you return to work with a more profound grasp of who you are and your potential as a leader. You’re also able to see this in an international context, with a deeper understanding of how to work with people from all cultures. — page 14 Why does this matter so much? Again, because it’s all designed to enhance your performance and increase your contribution. Third, through greater depth and breadth comes growth. Management Acceleration Programme participants all report that they return to the office as stronger people and more accomplished professionals. Broader outlooks and deeper insights bring personal and professional growth – which translates into immediate impact back at work. And that’s the most important transformation of all. Immediate impact is just the start, though. The learning remains, along with the INSEAD network, helping you and your business grow and develop for many years to come. But don’t take it from us. Listen to the participants and representatives of their companies. It’s their Management Acceleration Programme stories, on the next few pages, all of them so different, that really count. — pages 6 & 11 And then we’ll let the facts about the programme – its content, its learning process, its faculty and its participants – speak for themselves. 2 3 To learn more about the Management Acceleration Programme and download the application form, visit: www.insead.edu/executives/map.cfm
  • 8. 6 “It was business transition that brought me to INSEAD… but I ended up with a major promotion – a big professional transition too. It all started six years ago, when I joined Publicis as an intern. Even though I was a law graduate, advertising was my passion and in my blood. Eventually I worked my way into strategic planning, which requires a very broad outlook on our clients’ business. And then, the company decided to move into digital advertising, which meant the CEO was ready to sponsor development activities. I chose the Management Acceleration Programme very carefully. It wasn’t just about INSEAD’s international reputation. As I’d never studied business formally, I felt I needed some broad foundations. But I never realised it was possible to take in so much over just three weeks. Although I came in search of finance and accounting knowledge, I left with such strong insights into strategy and people management, not to mention a new perspective on my own field of marketing. The way the knowledge is passed on is incredible. For the first time in my adult life, I never felt the need for a cigarette break! Back in Lisbon, at Publicis I was promoted to head of department almost immediately, reporting directly to the CEO, bearing in mind a horizontal management responsibility, which I divide with a colleague of mine. The programme didn’t just give me the confidence in myself. It also gave senior managers confidence in me. In my case it was all about timing: the right programme at the right time. I’m using a lot of the knowledge it gave me every day – and still digesting the rest. I’ve stayed close to my fellow participants, even though we’re scattered all over the world. In fact we’re already planning among ourselves to return to INSEAD for the Advanced Management Programme!” To learn more about the Management Acceleration Programme and download the application form, visit: www.insead.edu/executives/map.cfm “I’m using a lot of the knowledge it gave me every day – and still digesting the rest.” Duarte Abreu Head of Strategic Planning, Publicis, Portugal INSEAD Management Acceleration Programme alumnus 6

  • 12.
  • 13. 11 “It was my director who recommended the programme to me. My manager did the programme a couple of years back and was so enthusiastic that I just had to try it for myself! In my case, I was looking mainly for new insights and an academic approach to business. The way the Management Acceleration Programme combines this with a more personal approach to growth made it the perfect fit. I wasn’t prepared for how amazing the experience turned out to be. It’s hard to convey the high energy of those three weeks and the incredible effect it has in such a short time. All I can say is that, as the name suggests, it really did accelerate my development. The biggest revelation was the coaching. It was very helpful to gain insight in how other people saw me before the programme. Now that I see myself more clearly, I have more tactics at my disposal for dealing with people and problems. Before I came to INSEAD, I was just go, go, go! I moved too fast. Today, I create time each day to reflect on how I’m doing things. I already see the benefits personally and professionally. Just as importantly, I think I’ve passed on a bit of INSEAD energy to my director – and of course my line manager, who started it all. But this time it was my turn to bring back the enthusiasm from the Management Acceleration Programme!” To learn more about the Management Acceleration Programme and download the application form, visit: www.insead.edu/executives/map.cfm “All I can say is that, as the name suggests, it really did accelerate my development.” Nicole Bader Senior Category Purchaser IT, KPN, The Netherlands INSEAD Management Acceleration Programme alumna 11
  • 14. 1212 The curriculum Depth, breadth… and value creation. This part of the programme will teach you not simply how to manage for value, but how to lead for value. Above all, it offers opportunities to develop your personal leadership abilities and explore the way you work with others. Leading within: organisational behaviour Companies, like all human groups, are essentially people in search of the best ways of working together. And, like all human groups, this requires effective leadership. Companies, however, require unusually all-round leaders, people who are skilled at interpersonal relations and communication but also adept with broader structural and cultural issues. Starting from this premise, you’ll examine topics such as: — Leading individuals (communication and feedback) — Working with teams and leading them — Organisational culture — Leading organisational change Leading outside: strategy Get to grips with the fundamentals of strategic analysis, including the latest techniques. As well as understanding how to compete as a single company within a single industry, learn how to build and manage a portfolio of businesses. Topics include: — Analysis by industry, market and competition — Developing and sustaining competitive advantage — Changing the rules of the game: Blue Ocean Strategy — Strategic resources and alliances — Corporate expansion, mergers and acquisitions Set Your Leadership Agenda (SYLA) A hands-on exercise to draw up your personal agenda for leadership. It involves your colleagues from work and the programme in 360-degree feedback and group coaching designed to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. We take you on a learning journey through all the parts of a business which create, capture and deliver value. You soon arrive at the point where you not only have a broad perspective on business but the ability to analyse complex problems in each area, regardless of your own background. Finance Financial reporting is not only required by law for publicly traded firms, but is also essential for instituting management discipline. We first help you to develop a deep understanding of the main financial statements, their interactions, and their key drivers. We then show you how these rich sources of information are used for strategic decision making as well as for performance monitoring and management. • 15. 1313 3 Integrate and reintegrate Management accounting The availability of unbiased financial and operational data is central to a wide range of management responsibilities, including strategic decision making and performance management. We’ll show you how some widely used management accounting systems often mislead managers, and provide you with tools to help you identify information that really is relevant. We’ll cover areas such as: — Classification, behaviour and use of management accounting data — Control systems Marketing Successful marketing is all about developing a coherent and systematic approach. From reviewing the most important issues to practising qualitative and quantitative analysis, we develop your ability to make structured marketing decisions in situations that initially seem totally unstructured. Topics may include the following: — Marketing strategy and the marketing mix — Communications — Channels of distribution — Pricing and product policy Operations and supply chain management While strategy is about direction setting, and finance about performance management, operations and supply chain management is about execution. We’ll discuss the key challenges to value creation in a supply network, but also introduce coordinating initiatives for value capture in a decentralised organisation. Issues typically include: — Value creation – breaking the cost-service trade-off — Value capture – aligning the network — The role of technology in synchronising the supply chain ecosystem Throughout the programme, several ‘linking moments’ help you to integrate its various parts into one whole, value- creating perspective. But the final chapter explicitly connects everything you’ve learnt over the previous weeks, preparing you for immediate impact on your return to the office. Competitive business simulation This powerful, two-and-a-half- day session allows you to live the challenging decisions of a manager leading an entrepreneurial firm. Under the expert guidance of INSEAD faculty, you grow your business from a small local company into a mature international organisation, competing with your fellow participants to win contracts and market share. It’s a one-off opportunity that leaves you buzzing with energy and ideas for the real-life challenges to come. • 25. 2323 Other business schools may say they’re international, but INSEAD has been international from the outset. Fifty years later, we’re the only leading business school to have a two-campus, two-continent structure that spans Asia and Europe. We’ve also become one of the largest of the world’s graduate business schools and now have sites in Abu Dhabi, Israel and the United States. Over the years we’ve become one of the largest of the world’s graduate business schools. But we’ve retained our fundamental difference. That is, there’s no dominant culture at INSEAD. Indeed, this has become more and more important, as business itself has gone increasingly global. Executive Education at INSEAD Our stated purpose as The Business School for the World is to bring together people cultures and ideas from around the world to change lives and transform organisations. And through Executive Education we can help transform your organisation. In fact, today we’re as famous for our Executive Education as we are for our pioneering one- year MBA degree. We offer one of the largest range of open-enrolment programmes for executives in the world. We also provide company- specific executive education, tailored exactly to individual organisations’ needs. Facilities that facilitate learning Both our campuses provide ideal settings for learning – but in very different ways. The idyllic forest of Fontainebleau in France provides a calm space for reflection just an hour from Paris. Meanwhile, our city location in Singapore taps into the energy of a thriving world business capital. Despite offering two very different perspectives, our two campuses benefit from the same high standard of facilities. These include the Plessis Mornay Learning Space in Fontainebleau, designed specifically for executive education, and a state-of-the- art extension in Singapore. Comfortable accommodation on or near campus, as well as on-site restaurants, bars, bookshops and extensive IT facilities complete the experience – and help to make the learning process even more effective. We think our diversity is our distinguishing feature. INSEAD is probably the only school where you’ll find 25 nationalities in the same class. And it’s certainly the only school where no single one of those 25 nationalities will predominate. That said, our faculty are among the best (and most diverse) in the world too. Why is diversity such a big deal? The obvious answer is that business is more international than ever before. But it’s the subtle answer that’s much more powerful. With so many different national and cultural perspectives to learn from, you really will start to see things differently. By challenging your old assumptions, you’ll become aware of new possibilities and start to understand how very differently people think. “By challenging your old assumptions, aware of new What’s the difference between the modular and continuous versions? The content is almost identical. However, we think it makes sense to spend a little more time on Asian issues during the two weeks of the modular version that’s spent in Singapore. We’d recommend the modular version to those who have a special interest in Asia or who are looking for an even more international experience than INSEAD usually offers. Please note that the modules aren’t interchangeable. Three weeks seems like a big commitment – can I afford so much time away? You need three weeks to gain the distance for reflection on your work and yourself. We also need that time to cover the ambitious curriculum. But the modular version offers a little more flexibility. And the consecutive version runs three times a year, enabling you to fit the programme into your hectic schedule. How do I know which INSEAD General Management Programme is right for me? It’s all about experience. And focus. Management Acceleration Programme participants generally have at least five years’ work experience, while International Executive Programme participants have eight to ten years’ management experience. I already have a business degree – will the programme cover the same old ground? Provided you’ve worked for a couple of years since graduating and accumulated some real-life management puzzles of your own, the Management Acceleration Programme is the perfect refresher course. It will also bring you right up-to-date with the latest thinking. Is the emphasis on soft leadership skills or hard knowledge, tools and frameworks? To be successful in business you need to balance your soft skills with your fundamental business understanding. So the programme seeks to enhance your understanding across the full business spectrum, while also developing your leadership capabilities. It’s such an integrated programme that soft and hard skills are intertwined and built together. Do I have to attend the sessions on my own area of expertise? Absolutely. First, you might gain a new perspective on your field. And second, you’ll have the valuable experience of passing on your expertise to classmates from other disciplines. It’s by sharing insights that people learn at INSEAD, as well as by listening to the wisdom of our faculty of course. So what do I do next? You’re talented, motivated, ambitious and hungry to learn. And you’ve read this far. So the next step is to apply using the form at www.insead.edu/executives/map. cfm. When you need INSEAD again, for the transition into general management or an even more senior post, we’ll be there for you and your company. But for now, let’s accelerate your management career together… To learn more about the Management Acceleration Programme and download the application form, visit: www.insead.edu/executives/map.cfm Q & A
