2. “No Matter what your age or gender;
restoring your hormones to their optimum levels
has the same effect as giving water to a dying plant” ¹
Unfortunately, for years women have been told several erroneous and
dangerous things about hormone imbalance, PMS (Premenstrual
Syndrome), menopause, traditional hormone replacement therapy
(HRT), and alternative hormone replacement options. Some of the
false claims include but are not limited to:
Like most women, your symptoms are in your head.
A prescription of Prozac or Birth Control pills will help your
PMS and/or menopause symptoms.
A hysterectomy will cure your condition.
Symptoms of PMS and menopause are caused by an
estrogen deficiency.
Synthetic HRT protects your bones and heart.
Synthetic HRT is safe and effective.
Natural Hormones have not had enough research to offer evidence of their
safety or effectiveness.
You need a doctor to diagnose and treat you regardless of your own
available knowledge and first hand experience.
Anyone other than a medical doctor is not trained and is not qualified to
give advice or information about healthcare and/or treatment options.
Thanks to the pioneering efforts of many dedicated physicians, women’s
organizations, governmental agencies, and even movie stars 2 –
the truth has finally been made available to the thousands of frustrated and
confused women suffering from the often debilitating symptoms of PMS, all
stages of menopause, and several other unhealthy conditions related to
hormonal imbalance.
The truth is that menopause is not a condition or disease that should be treated
with drugs; rather it is a stage of life that all women will experience at some point
in their midlife years. Further, PMS and menopause are the result of the same
hormonal environment and PMS often precedes menopause when a woman’s
hormones go unbalanced.
www.FreedomFromMenopause.com Page 2
3. The news that synthetic HRT (pharmaceutical drugs) are NOT safe, and often make
symptoms worse, not to mention can cause life-threatening illnesses is well known. The
fact that pharmaceutical companies and doctors alike continue to manufacture and
prescribe these dangerous drugs is proof of greed and/or ignorance.
Women need to understand that not all HRT is the same and that
there are many safe alternatives. There is overwhelming evidence
that natural hormones and supplements are safe and effective.
With the knowledge available here, women can make informed
decisions and better choices regarding the treatment and
prevention of PMS and menopause symptoms which may also
result in subsequent improvements in health, wellness and
longevity.
Let’s Take a Look at the Bad News First
Not all hormones are the same! Most doctors understand
very little about bio-identical hormones. And pharmaceutical
companies work very hard to keep women and doctors
grossly misinformed about the drugs they spend millions
promoting.
Conventional medicine has always been about treating
the symptoms of disease and never about prevention or
addressing the causes of disease. The proof of this
ineffective approach is seen everyday in the high cost of medical
care in the United States and the low cure rates of our most common diseases.
Furthermore, prescription medications are not only incredibly expensive but
usually cause other symptoms that are often worse than the original illness!
If you don’t believe me, here are the results of “The Women’s Health Initiative”
(WHI) study, sponsored by the government to evaluate the use of synthetic
hormones such as Premarin and Provera (both of which have been prescribed
for over 60 years without documented proof of their safety or efficacy). The study
was abandoned in 2002 due to their astonishing results!
Here are the actual clinical findings:
22% increase in cardiovascular disease
26 % increase in breast cancer
29% increase in coronary heart disease
41% increase in strokes
200% increase in pulmonary embolism
P.S. The pharmaceutical industry has always known that synthetic
HRT may be associated with cancer (They just forgot to tell us).

4. The Menopause Industry: How the Medical Establishment
Exploits Women,
In her book, Sandra Coney recounts this sordid tale:
“Warnings about the dangers of estrogen had been
made sporadically for nearly 30 years. In particular, it
was known that estrone, the form of estrogen in
Premarin, could be associated with the development of
endometrial cancer. As early as 1947,” she
discloses, Dr. Saul Gusbery of Columbia University
“called the ready use of estrogen promiscuous and
warned that what was going on was a human
experiment.” He had observed too many estrogen users
coming in for dilation and curettage (D&C) for abnormal
bleeding caused by endometrial overstimulation, as well as documented
precancerous and cancerous changes of the uterus.3
Over time, it appeared the FDA
was beginning to protect
women’s healthcare rights
when they finally responded to
the numerous studies that
pointed to the dangers of
synthetic HRT. They ruled that
all prescriptions must carry
warning labels.
But those with financial interests strongly opposed the FDA ruling. The
American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American
College of Internal Medicine, and the American Cancer Society joined
in opposition claiming that “giving patient’s information violated the
physician’s right to control how much information to disclose to
patients and threatened medicine’s professional autonomy.” 4
In addition, with the help of the American Pharmaceutical
Manufacturers’ Association and the public relations firm for
Ayerst Pharmaceutical, Hill and Knowlton (merged with
Wyeth), a massive promotional campaign went out to “preserve
the identity of estrogen replacement therapy as an effective,
safe treatment for symptoms of the menopause.” 5
Eventually the U.S. Women’s Health Network was
instrumental in the courts finding favor with the FDA and the
FDA won.
www.FreedomFromMenopause.com Page 4
5. Here is the actual Wyeth warning for Premarin:
What is the most important information I should know about Premarin (an estrogen
mixture)?
Estrogens increase the chance of getting cancer of the uterus. Report any
unusual vaginal bleeding right away while you are taking Premarin. Vaginal
bleeding after menopause may be a warning sign of cancer of the uterus
(womb). Your healthcare provider should check any unusual
vaginal bleeding to find out the cause.
Do not use estrogens with or without progestins to prevent
heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, or dementia. Using
estrogens, with or without progestins, may increase your
chance of getting heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer,
and blood clots. Using estrogens, with or without
progestins, may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of
women age 65 years or older. You & your healthcare provider should talk
6
regularly about whether you still need treatment with Premarin.
By the way… did you know that Premarin is
made from the urine of a pregnant mare?
And they call it “Natural” – When they
get through with the manufacturing
process, it’s not even natural for a horse!
So Why do Doctors Still Prescribe These
Dangerous Drugs?
Good question Sherlock. Let’s investigate…
Wyeth, formerly known as American Home Products (AHP), is one of the largest
pharmaceutical companies in the world. They are known for manufacturing the prescription
drugs Premarin and Effexor, both boasting over $3 billion in sales annually. Premarin became
the #1 prescribed drug in the US in 1993. Wyeth's sales topped $13 billion in 1995; two years
later, Premarin became the company's first brand to reach $1 billion in sales.
www.FreedomFromMenopause.com Page 5
6. Following the “Women’s Health Initiative
Study” results, Wyeth experienced a
significant decline in its sales of Premarin, Prempro (conjugated
equine estrogens) and related hormones, from over $2 billion in 2002
to just over $1 billion in 2006.
Wyeth, as a corporation, filed a 'citizens complaint' with the United States FDA on October 16,
2005, requesting that the US FDA take action against pharmacies who compound, manufacture,
or sell unlicensed bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) drugs to their patients.
Specifically, Wyeth asserted that the BRHT drugs are not licensed by the FDA according to
section 505 of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, misbranded and adulterated per sections 501
and 502 of 21 U.S.C. (paragraphs 351, 352, and 355). Drug manufacturers are required to
demonstrate through clinical trials that marketed drugs are safe and efficacious, a process that
BHRT drugs have not undergone. If honored, the request would require the same safety and
efficacy data for those primarily engaged in alternative medicine.7
Give me a break!
When did they start caring about the
safety of American women? They only
care about their bank accounts! Don’t
let them fool you. They are just
protecting their bottom line and don’t
want anyone else to dip into their
profits. Jerks!
Pharmaceutical companies spend years cultivating
their cash cows.
They have mastered the
marketing game.
www.FreedomFromMenopause.com Page 6
7. Tremendous investment goes into
developing and studying a
pharmaceutical product and then
teaching physicians how and when
to prescribe it.
They offer physicians and the
physician’s staff many rewards for
pushing their product onto an
unknowing public.
Most drug reps are paid by
percentage of business earned.
Some of them will offer doctors a
free lunch, trips, and anything the
human mind can imagine.
Much of what physician’s are taught
after university comes from drug
reps that have done extensive
research in order to justify a
product. It’s their job!
As no pharmaceutical company
manufactures natural hormones,
most doctors do not learn about
them unless they do their own
research. 8
Let’s examine a few
opinions…
“My contention is that there are all-
natural cures for virtually every
disease and ailment. These cures
are being suppressed and hidden
from you by the pharmaceutical
industry, the FDA, and the FTC, as
well as other groups.” –

8. Listen up!
Let’s Get a Few Things Straight…
There are many different types of hormones made by the human body with
circulating levels varying every second of every day.
No wonder we feel a little crazy sometimes...
Our hormones are produced and released into our bodies by glands
such as the ovaries and testes (in males), adrenal glands, the
pancreas and pituitary gland. They regulate and control all aspects of
who we are and how we feel.
If you recall, your hormones were sporadic during puberty, when
hormone surges and imbalances created a young adult your parents
had never met before. If you have children, depending on what stage of
menopause you are currently in, you may recall the crazy hormone ride
you took before and after giving birth.
Our hormones begin to decline in early mid-life and some hormones almost
disappear after menopause when the ovaries stop functioning completely. There
are many things that can influence the production, decline and the ongoing daily
balance of our hormones, particularly our lifestyle and environment.
PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)
is considered by many to be a
normal part of womanhood, but
in reality, it is not normal at all.
PMS is nothing more than a
hormone imbalance
perpetuated by poor diet,
stress, environment,
medications, health status, and
other often controllable
variables.
Then as we approach “The Change” our hormones become sporadic again as
they did in our pubescent years. However, at progressively younger ages,
women in our society are experiencing the strange and uncomfortable symptoms
associated with peri-menopause (the ten years or so before menopause).
Women may begin to notice changes as early as their mid thirty’s and even
sooner in some cases.
Medical treatments, prescription drugs, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation,
genetics, lifestyle, diet and mental outlook are just a few of the factors that can
initiate a premature menopause. But generally speaking, menopause most often
occurs between the ages of 40 and 55 with the median age for non-smoking
women being 51. 11
www.FreedomFromMenopause.com Page 8
9. Just as all women are NOT created equal, nor are their symptoms. The stages
and symptoms of menopause vary with some predominantly common symptoms
such as hot flashes and mood swings. But some women never have a single
symptom and feel the same throughout their entire adult life. However, those
women are in the minority. And just as no two women are the same; neither
should be the treatment they receive.
Synthetic versus Natural Hormones
Deciding what’s natural when it comes to
hormone therapy can be difficult. Like
beauty, natural (hormone therapy) is in the
eye of the beholder.
You can look at natural a couple of ways:
Natural can mean similar to what you already have in your body.
In the laboratory, scientists can replicate the exact molecular structure of
human hormones. The results are identical to human hormones but
without the stray bits that exist in all animal hormones. So these hormones
have the same structure as natural human hormones, but they’re made in
a lab, so they’re synthetic.
Natural can also mean coming from nature (you know, plants and
animals.) Some hormones are derived from plants but need to be
modified to produce a beneficial effect in our bodies. Other hormones
come from animals. So, there are natural hormones that come from
nature, but they’re not natural to humans.
So, “natural” isn’t really a good term for describing the hormones used for
hormone therapy. 12
Natural Bio-identical
*According to Jonathan Wright, MD
Vs and
“when describing replacement hormones,
Synthetic Natural
the word “natural” is used to refer to the
structure of the hormone molecule,
not it’s source.”
Other than your own body, the source for true, natural sex hormones is either the
wild yam (Dioscorea composite) or soy. These are then biochemically converted
to molecules identical to human hormones.13
These bio-identical and natural substances cannot be patented by a
pharmaceutical company and therefore not widely known in the U.S. until
recently. Natural hormones have been used in Europe for decades. (Go Figure!)
www.FreedomFromMenopause.com Page 9
10. Are you confused yet?
Let’s try to make some sense of it …
WARNING:
“Wild yam cream” available in most health food stores is NOT natural
progesterone. Wild yam DOES NOT contain progesterone and your
body DOES NOT convert wild yam extract into progesterone.14
Natural Progesterone is made from a plant source and is converted in a laboratory to an
exact chemical copy of the progesterone produced in your body. A safe and effective
progesterone product must contain U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) progesterone.
“Provera” and “Progestin” are synthetic chemical analogues similar to progesterone, but
different enough to have some dramatic side effects. The progesterone molecule has
been chemically altered in order to be patented and owned by the pharmaceutical
company. Provera is foreign to the body and has actually been shown to inhibit the
biosynthesis of progesterone. “According to Dr. David G. Williams, Progestin can cause
abnormal menstrual flow or cessation, fluid retention, nausea, insomnia, jaundice,
depression, fever, weight fluctuations, allergic reactions and the development of male
characteristics. Natural progesterone, on the other hand, has few side effects:
occasionally it may cause a feeling of euphoria for some women, it may alter the timing of
15
their menstrual cycles”
Natural progesterone does NOT produce the severe side effects that synthetic
progestin’s do, including the increased risk of cancer, abnormal menstrual flow, fluid
retention, nausea, depression, etc. Natural progesterone, in addition to enhancing fat
breakdown and preventing blood clots, counteracts carbohydrate cravings that may
promote obesity and cardiovascular risk. In addition, progesterone can relieve
menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, reverse osteoporosis and enhance mood and
libido. 16
www.FreedomFromMenopause.com Page 10
11. Synthetic hormones do not occur naturally in the body. Synthetic patentable
hormones like those found in Premarin, PremPro, Provera and methyltestosterone
are artificial hormones that have been altered from the original hormone so they do
not act or look like natural hormones. Some patentable estrogens are derived from
the urine of pregnant horses. Thus, the commercially available Premarin not only
contains estrone in unnaturally high doses, but also contains many other hormones
found only in horses.17
Phytoestrogens, the natural hormones found in plants, are not the same as the hormones
found in the female body, although they may have somewhat similar beneficial effects.
Soy and Flaxseed are particularly rich in these substances. Phytoestrogens can be
divided into two main families: Isoflavones and lignans. Like other estrogens,
phytoestrogens bind to estrogen receptors throughout our systems. When they bind, they
exert a balancing, or “adaptogenic,” effect. This means that if your estrogen levels are
low, the herbs will have an estrogenic effect, but if your estrogen levels are too high, they
will block the stronger estrogens. That’s why the same herb-dong quai, for example- can
be used both for conditions in which there is too much estrogen (such as PMS) and for
those in which there is too little (hot flashes).18
Phytoestrogens do not
stimulate the growth of
estrogen-sensitive tissue
such as in the breast and
uterus; in fact, they have
been shown to inhibit breast
tumors in some animal
studies, probably because
they occupy estrogen
receptor sites and prevent
overstimulation of the
19
cells.
Black Cohosh has been used in this country for hundreds of years. It is also a popular
Chinese herb. It binds to estrogen receptors, where it selectively represses the elevation
of LH that occurs at menopause. Its estrogenic effect decreases hot flashes, night
sweats, depression, vaginal dryness, emotional instability and menstrual cramps. It is
also helpful for PMS symptoms. A standardized extract of black cohosh sold under the
trade name Remifemin is one of the most widely used herbs in Europe, where it is a well-
documented alternative to HRT.20
Research shows that when women ate 60g of soy protein per day in the
form of a powdered drink mix, they had a 45 percent reduction in
hot flashes after twelve weeks.21
Depending on the amount you’re eating, you may notice a
decrease in hot flashes within a few days of adding soy to
your diet. The average woman in Japan (where hot flashes
are relatively rare) eats four to six servings of soy per day,
or the equivalent of 100-200 mg soy isoflavones.22

12. Let’s Take a Peek at What the
Experts Have to Say…
Natural progesterone protects against cancer, is a natural tranquilizer,
promotes feelings of well-being, enhances the beneficial actions of
estrogen and protects against estrogen side effects, relieves
menopausal symptoms, and stimulates new bone formation as well as
protects against osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Provera
does none of that. Even if a woman does not have a uterus, all women
should take progesterone because of the above benefits. -“Natural
Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women and Men”, by Neal
Rouzier, M.D. pages 29-30.
A 1996 review of the evidence on progesterone and breast health
concluded that Bio-identical progesterone not only reduced the rate of
spread of breast cancer, but may even be responsible for reducing the
incidence of new cases. -“The Wisdom of Menopause” by
Christiane Northrup, M.D. pages 437-442
“The diet of most American women is high in calories and deficient in nutritional value.
Seventy percent of the American diet consists of nutrient deficient processed food. To experience
optimal health, research has shown that you need to
add supplements to your diet at levels well above
the RDA to keep you feeling good, your immune
system strong, your energy high, and to reduce your
risk of disease. Correcting nutritional deficiencies is
essential to restoring health, maintaining a strong
foundation of wellness, and promoting longevity.
Additional health burdens are placed upon women
as the result of declining or imbalanced naturally
occurring hormone levels. While estrogen and
progesterone levels naturally decline with age,
women of all ages are exposed to tremendous
amounts of estrogen from the environment

progesterone ratio and resulting in what is known as
Estrogen Dominance. This state of imbalance may
often lead to symptoms of PMS (Premenstrual
Syndrome), peri-menopause, and menopause.
Estrogen dominance has also been linked to
diseases such as breast cancer, heart disease and stroke.
In contrast to conventional medicine, approaching dietary deficiencies and hormonal imbalances

prevention of illness and restoring or maintaining wellness. This e-book and

14. What Happens in Your Body During a
Natural Transition?
Progesterone levels typically decline, while estrogen levels remain stable
or even increase during the years prior to menopause. This is the most
significant issue for the majority of women; many of the early symptoms
that women feel are due to progesterone levels that are too low, in relation to their
levels of estrogen. This state of a low progesterone-to-estrogen ratio is also referred to as
“Estrogen Dominance.” Some symptoms that women suffer when progesterone declines include:
• Breast swelling and tenderness
• Mood swings
• “Fuzzy thinking”
• Irritability
• Trouble sleeping
• Water retention
• PMS
• Weight gain
Testosterone levels may also start to decline well before the last menstrual cycle. While the
symptoms of low testosterone are often more subtle that those of low progesterone, for some
women they can be significant. Symptoms of low testosterone include:
• Loss of sex drive
• Decreased sexual response
• Decreased sensitivity in your erogenous zones
• Decreased sense of well-being, energy and ambition
• Depression
• Loss of or thinning pubic hair.
Estrogen is often the last hormone to decline, but is the hormone that is traditionally associated
with menopausal symptoms. As you approach menopause your ovaries slow their production of
estrogen. While your ovaries continue to make some estrogen for the rest of your life and your body
is still producing it from other sources, the overall effect is a dramatic drop in the level of estrogen
circulating in your body — about 30–60 percent for most women. Symptoms of estrogen decline
include:
• Hot flashes
• Night sweats
• Vaginal dryness
• Decreased energy and ambition
• Depression or mood swings
• Dizziness
• Headaches
• Mental confusion
• Urinary incontinence
• Recurrent urinary tract infections
• Increased susceptibility to vaginal infections

*Due to daily overexposure to environmental estrogens (Xenoestrogens) it is recommended that women of all
ages supplement with Balanace Progesterone Cream according to the label directions.
* Progesterone is a precursor to testosterone and therefore used by the body to make testosterone. Women
who supplement with Progesterone Cream alone may often see a reduction in their symnptoms of low
testostereone.
PMS symptoms may be related to low progesterone.
Menopausal symptoms may be related to low progesterone, testosterone and estrogen; therefore it is
important to catagorize your symptoms and supplement according to your sympotms.
