The Medical Council of India has revised the undergraduate medical education
curriculum so that the Indian Medical Graduate (IMG) is able to recognize
“Health for All” as a national goal. He/she should also be able to fulfil his/her
societal obligations. The revised curriculum has specified the competencies that
a student must attain and clearly defined teaching learning strategies for the
same. With this goal in mind, early clinical exposure, intergrated teaching,
skill development, AETCOM , self-directed learning , Small Group Discusson ,
Seminar , Tutorial , DOAP , PANDEMIC Modules and Medittaion , Yoga,
Sports, have been introduced. There would be emphasis on communication
skill, basic clinical skills and professionalism. There is a paradigm shift from
the traditional didactic classroom-based teaching to learning environments
where there is emphasis on learning by exploring, questioning, applying,
discussing, analysing, reflecting, collaborating and doing. The recognition of
this need is enshrined by a greatly enhanced allocation of time to these methods
and also the assessment techniques. With this view in mind the log book has
been designed as per the guidelines of competency Based Medical Education
curriculum.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Self-directed Learning (SDL) is defined as the “preparedness of a student
to engage in learning activities defined by himself /herself rather than a
teacher”. The Graduate Medical Education 2019 document brought out by the
MCI lists life-long learning as one of the roles of the Indian Medical Graduate
(IMG). One of the methods suggested achieving this is SDL.
Seven key components of SDL have been described. These include the
identification of learning needs, formulation of learning objectives,
utilization of appropriate learning resources, employing suitable learning
strategies, commitment to a learning contract, evaluating learning
outcomes and the teacher as a facilitator. Dedicated time for SDL is provided
for each subject in the Second phase.

CERTIFICATION OF SKILLS IN PHARMACOLOGY
General information:
1. There are 14 skills that need to be certified in Pharmacology.
2. These skills will be tested in normal, healthy volunteers or simulated
environment.
3. The focus will be on whether students perform the procedures correctly.
4. Since these are skills that need to be recertified at the end of clinical
training, this certification is a “Second level Certification”.
Role of the certifier:
1. The faculty will observe the Students performing the skill and ask the specific
questions that need to be asked (based on the skill checklist).
2. The faculty will use a numerical score but should determine the pass or
satisfactory score. (See below).
3. The faculty will determine the level of achievement or criteria that will
determine satisfactory (meets expectations) Completion of the activity and
contribute towards the acquisition of the competency by:
a. Give feedback to the student on the errors and,
b. they will also prescribe what a learner should do if he or she does not meet
the expectations and hence not successfully completed the activity i.e.
should he or she repeat the activity? Should there be remedial training
after x number of repeats? Etc.
Assessment:
A. Professional conduct and communication:
1) Is the student adequately groomed?
2) Does the student introduce him/herself, greet the subject and obtain
consent?
3) Does the student give clear instructions to the subject?
4) Does the student thank the subject?
5) Does the student use the hand sanitizer at the beginning of the session?
6) Does the student use the hand sanitizer at the end of the session?
B. Skill specific assessment:
1) Has the student conducted the given assessment completely?
2) Has the student conducted the given assessment correctly? (For the above
two points please refer to the checklist for the specific skill).
3) How do you rate the student for this session?

  • 3. Page 3 of 60 The Medical Council of India has revised the undergraduate medical education curriculum so that the Indian Medical Graduate (IMG) is able to recognize “Health for All” as a national goal. He/she should also be able to fulfil his/her societal obligations. The revised curriculum has specified the competencies that a student must attain and clearly defined teaching learning strategies for the same. With this goal in mind, early clinical exposure, intergrated teaching, skill development, AETCOM , self-directed learning , Small Group Discusson , Seminar , Tutorial , DOAP , PANDEMIC Modules and Medittaion , Yoga, Sports, have been introduced. There would be emphasis on communication skill, basic clinical skills and professionalism. There is a paradigm shift from the traditional didactic classroom-based teaching to learning environments where there is emphasis on learning by exploring, questioning, applying, discussing, analysing, reflecting, collaborating and doing. The recognition of this need is enshrined by a greatly enhanced allocation of time to these methods and also the assessment techniques. The student is responsible for getting the entries in the logbook verified by the Faculty in charge regularly. 3. Entries in the logbook will reflect the activities undertaken in the department & have to be scrutinized by the Head of the concerned department. 4. The logbook is a record of various activities by the student like :  Overall participation & performance  Attendance  Participation in sessions  Record of completion of pre-determined activities.  Acquisition of selected competencies 5. The logbook is the record of work done by the candidate in that department/specialty and should be verified by the college before submitting the application of the students for the University examination. 6. Students also have to write reflections on AETCOM Modules in AETCOM booklet 7. Reflections should be structured using the following guiding questions:  What happened? (What did you learn from this experience )  So what? (What are the applications of this learning)  What next (what knowledge or skills do you need to develop so that you can handle this type of situation) Second Professional teaching hours-Pharmacology Teaching method Hours  Lectures: 80  Small Group Discussion 20  Practical Classes including Skills 100  Self-Directed Learning 12  Tutorial/seminars/Integrated learning: 18 Total 230 Pharmacology Logbook for Phase II as per CBME Curriculum GENERAL INFORMATION
  • 8. Page 8 of 60 Self-directed Learning (SDL) is defined as the “preparedness of a student to engage in learning activities defined by himself /herself rather than a teacher”. The Graduate Medical Education 2019 document brought out by the MCI lists life-long learning as one of the roles of the Indian Medical Graduate (IMG). One of the methods suggested achieving this is SDL. Seven key components of SDL have been described. These include the identification of learning needs, formulation of learning objectives, utilization of appropriate learning resources, employing suitable learning strategies, commitment to a learning contract, evaluating learning outcomes and the teacher as a facilitator. Dedicated time for SDL is provided for each subject in the Second phase. Pharmacology Logbook for Phase II as per CBME Curriculum SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING

  • 37. Page 37 of 60 CERTIFICATION OF SKILLS IN PHARMACOLOGY General information: 1. There are 14 skills that need to be certified in Pharmacology. 2. These skills will be tested in normal, healthy volunteers or simulated environment. 3. The focus will be on whether students perform the procedures correctly. 4. Since these are skills that need to be recertified at the end of clinical training, this certification is a “Second level Certification”. Role of the certifier: 1. The faculty will observe the Students performing the skill and ask the specific questions that need to be asked (based on the skill checklist). 2. The faculty will use a numerical score but should determine the pass or satisfactory score. (See below). 3. The faculty will determine the level of achievement or criteria that will determine satisfactory (meets expectations) Completion of the activity and contribute towards the acquisition of the competency by: a. Give feedback to the student on the errors and, b. they will also prescribe what a learner should do if he or she does not meet the expectations and hence not successfully completed the activity i.e. should he or she repeat the activity? Should there be remedial training after x number of repeats? Etc. Assessment: A. Professional conduct and communication: 1) Is the student adequately groomed? 2) Does the student introduce him/herself, greet the subject and obtain consent? 3) Does the student give clear instructions to the subject? 4) Does the student thank the subject? 5) Does the student use the hand sanitizer at the beginning of the session? 6) Does the student use the hand sanitizer at the end of the session? B. Skill specific assessment: 1) Has the student conducted the given assessment completely? 2) Has the student conducted the given assessment correctly? (For the above two points please refer to the checklist for the specific skill). 3) How do you rate the student for this session? Pharmacology Logbook for Phase II as per CBME Curriculum C.
