Education 4.0
EDUCATION 1.0
 Golden period of India.
 Students would go to Gurukuls and study with very capable Gurus.
 Highly personalised and holistic system of education.
 Student centric but not a highly scalable system.
 Few had the opportunity to learn from a lead Guru.
Education 4.0
EDUCATION 2.0
 Current schooling system.
 Created at the birth of the “Industrial Evolution”, couple of centuries
ago.
 Used to produce test takers.
 Not to create inventors, entrepreneurs, scientists, technologists,
leaders, artists, sportsmen or musicians.
 Curriculum centric.
Education 4.0
EDUCATION 3.0
 Born in the post internet digital world, also called digital first
education.
 Digital learning platforms (Khan Academy, Coursera, etc,) is available
for every student to learn without the boundaries of a country,
school or education board.
 Content is always available at the least cost and at the learner’s
convenience.
 Redefined the notion of what is a classroom. A device connected to
the internet.
 Is highly scalable and content centric.
Education 4.0
EDUCATION 3.0 (Contd….)
 In pre internet world, products and services are only physical.
Ex: Library - Books are organised methodically
Communication by handwritten letters
Sent by postal services
 In the post internet world,
Search engines – replaced library
E-mails and WhatsApp – replaced postal services.
Education 4.0
PRINCIPLE OF DIGITAL ECOSYSTEMS
 The key principle in creating digital ecosystems seems to be that
“whatever can be done digitally should be done digitally and
only whatever needs to be done physically should be done
physically and the physical and digital worlds should be
blended seamlessly to complement each other and not to
compete with each other”.
Education 4.0
BLENDING OF DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL
WORLD
Examples:
1) Order a product online
Digital – searching the products, reading the reviews, adding
them to the cart, paying for them
Physical – Products get delivered to our doorstep.
2) Booking a cab
Digital – Choose the destination, cab time, make payments and
give feedback through an App
Physical – Arrival of a car to our footstep.
Education 4.0
POSSIBLE QUESTIONS ARISE IN EVERYONE’S
MIND
1) How will education evolve next?
2) What will education 4.0 look like?
3) How will combine the personalisation of education 1.0, the comprehensiveness of
education 2.0 and the scalability and quality of education 3.0?
4) How will it take advantage of the digital and AI revolution that has been happening
over the last few decades?
5) Whether post COVID, we will all go back to centuries old pre digital education
system?
6) Where physical school education and the digital online education will continue to
compete with each other or will we take this opportunity to create a new hybrid
education system that blends the physical and digital construct of education into a
seamless hole as we have done in other domains?
Education 4.0
EDUCATION 4.0
 Old world – divide school into classwork and homework.
 New world – divide school into digital mode and physical mode.
 Three parts to education 4.0
1. Digital only
2. Physical only
3. Digital and Physical
Education 4.0
DIGITAL ONLY
 We can create a fairly sophisticated digital learning platform with the
help of devices cloud, connectivity and technologies such as AI.
 Digital learning platform can do 3 things to personalise education at
scale.
1. Curriculum Personalisation
2. Practice and Assessment Personalisation
3. Content Personalisation
Education 4.0
CURRICULUM PERSONALISATION
 Every child need not learn the same thing at the same pace.
 Every child on any given day is at a unique stage of her learning
journey.
 State of learning is based on her cumulative activities and outcomes
on her cumulative practices and assessments.
 Using this, AI can suggest what the student is ready to learn next.
 Can easily carve out a unique and the most efficient learning path
across all concepts in a subject.
 Will learn and master the same high level of mastery across all the
concepts but the pace and the journey they will take to get there can
be very different.
Education 4.0
PRACTICE AND ASSESSMENT
PERSONALISATION
 Ensures that each student is given a unique next problem based on
her current state of learning and how she solved previous problems.
 Efficiency and precision of practices can go up significantly if AI was
allowed to generate the next best problem for each student in an
adoptive practice mode.
Education 4.0
CONTENT PERSONALISATION
 Recommend the right content to each student by matching the
learning style of the student with the teaching style of the content.
 Sequence of content with AI model is learned.
Education 4.0
DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL
 Digital learning of the student with the physical classroom learning in
a very unique manner.
 Hybrid Education: Dynamic sectioning per day.
 AI can group all the similar students together who have mastered
concepts A, B and C and struggling with concepts P and Q are
grouped together as a section.
 These students get notified and all gather together in a physical
classroom at school.
 Teacher is also notified about the section, so that she can adjust her
focus on these 2 concepts where the students are struggling.
 Called as daily adaptive sectioning per subject.
 Increase the relevance and focus of learning and teaching within each
section.
Education 4.0
CONCLUSION
 Integrate the best of the physical and digital world naturally.
 Give deep insights to teachers to make the most of their classroom
teaching hours.
 Teachers won’t have to worry about giving homework or correcting
homework or tests.
 AI just need to know which students are struggling with which set of
concepts and which adoptive section has to be taught which
concepts.
 Peer-to-peer learning platform. (Student can do one-on-one teaching
of concepts to each other via a very intelligent matching algorithm).
 May call it learn to teach and teach to learn to master a concept.
