 Proteins determine membrane’s specific functions
 cell membrane & organelle membranes each have
unique collections of proteins
 Membrane proteins:
 peripheral proteins
 loosely bound to surface of membrane
 cell surface identity marker (antigens)
 integral proteins
 penetrate lipid bilayer, usually across whole membrane
 transmembrane protein
 transport proteins
 channels, permeases (pumps)
Antibodies are small proteins that circulate in the bloodstream. They are part of the immune (defence)
system and are sometimes called immunoglobulins. They are made by B lymphocytes (a type of white
blood cell). Antibodies attach to proteins and other chemicals in the body, which they recognise to be
foreign (not normally found in the body). The foreign proteins and chemicals that antibodies attach to are
called antigens.

AP Biology Membrane Proteins  Proteins determine membrane’s specific functions  cell membrane & organelle membranes each have unique collections of proteins  Membrane proteins:  peripheral proteins  loosely bound to surface of membrane  cell surface identity marker (antigens)  integral proteins  penetrate lipid bilayer, usually across whole membrane  transmembrane protein  transport proteins  channels, permeases (pumps) Antibodies are small proteins that circulate in the bloodstream. They are part of the immune (defence) system and are sometimes called immunoglobulins. They are made by B lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). Antibodies attach to proteins and other chemicals in the body, which they recognise to be foreign (not normally found in the body). The foreign proteins and chemicals that antibodies attach to are called antigens.
