Assistant School Leader
Overview:
Building 21 is seeking an experienced and creative Assistant School Leader to
support the Founding School Leader in the implementation of our second high
school, located in Allentown, PA. The Assistant School Leader will report to the
Founding School Leader and will work collaboratively with a cross-functional team of
instructors, technology experts, community members, students, parents,
administrators, and representatives of industry to realize the vision of Building 21 to
“customize education at scale” (see About Building 21 below for additional
information). Building 21 is committed to customizing learning for each student
through: strong relationships; a competency-based system; the robust use of
technology as a means, not an end, to improved teaching and learning; and learning
opportunities based on the interests and passions of students. Building 21’s model
includes a highly collaborative structures for teachers, students and partners; and
community-embedded learning experiences.
The second Building 21 School will open as a high autonomy, in-district public
school in the Allentown School District (ASD) in August 2015. The school will open
with approximately 150 students and will grow to 600 students over four years.
The ideal candidate for Assistant School Leader will possess the following beliefs,
mindsets and characteristics:
● Belief that building strong and caring relationships with students and adults is
the foundation upon which a successful school is built.
● Deep commitment to positive youth development and an unwavering faith in
the potential of every student.
● Fundamental belief that, with the right supports and expectations, every
student has the ability to design their own path to success in the post-
secondary world.
● Strong desire to support and design authentic problem-based/project-based
learning experiences and performance assessments to increase students
exposure to different fields of study.
● Willingness to implement and oversee learning through a competency-based
approach.
● Strong technology skills and the belief in using a one-to-one model to support
personalized learning for students.
● Comfort with utilizing multiple types of data.
● Comfort with change, iteration and ambiguity.
● A growth mindset, understanding that failure is the path to success.
● Commitment to working on personal growth and continuous learning.
● Willingness to collaborate, design and co-teach with community and business
partners.
● Willingness to challenge traditional mindsets and beliefs about what school is
and what school is not.
● Willingness to contribute to a collaborative culture that challenges and
supports each other.
Responsibilities:
Culture and Climate Leadership
● Establish and maintain a safe, supportive, trusting and welcoming culture
and climate for the school, families, and the extended community.
● Model and encourage teachers, students, and staff to develop a restorative
mindset and create a school-wide approach to conflict management.
● Passionately communicate the Building 21 mission and vision to faculty,
students, members of the community, and other stakeholders.
● Intentionally build and maintain structures for authentic family, parent and
community engagement in the school.
● Engage in a learning community with other school developers and school
leaders in Allentown.
● Develop and sustain partnerships in the network to support student-learning
pathways.
Design Process
● Participate in cross-functional design team to adapt the Building 21
competency framework, instructional model, assessment system, student and
adult induction process, and professional development program.
● Work with Founding School Leader and community & industry partners to
develop applied learning opportunities.
● Work with teachers and staff to embed and fully integrate technology into the
instructional model and operational processes of the school.
Instructional Leadership:
● Ensure that the pedagogy and instructional model of the school reflect the
values, vision and mission of Building 21.
● Establish a rigorous and engaging learning environment that couples high
standards with necessary supports.
● Ensure deliberate and meaningful integration of community-based and
problem-based learning experiences such as work-based internships and
service learning opportunities into the school-based learning experience
● Model and foster a culture of transparency, risk-taking, continuous learning,
and collaboration.
● Create structures for inquiry and teamwork among faculty and students.
● Support the ongoing development of the curriculum and instructional model
as the school grows.
● Work with team to develop and to implement a system of formative and
summative assessments that support student and teacher growth and
learning.
● Develop leadership skills to support teachers’ implementation of blended
learning.
Operational Leadership:
● Facilitate day-to-day activities in the school.
● Problem-solve creatively to assist with parent/student/teacher concerns.
● Facilitate all communications with parents/students/teachers/community (i.e.
website, Twitter, Facebook,…)
● Be available for evening events.
● Hold self and others accountable for personal, professional, and community
(school) growth.
Required Qualifications and Experience
● At least five years of teaching/leadership experience
● Fierce belief in the potential of young people
● Fluent in the Spanish language is a plus
● Proficient with technology
● Demonstrated ability to communicate well with a wide variety of people.
● A growth mindset
● Highly collaborative
● A demonstrated personal commitment to life-long learning.
● An inquiry stance
● Natural problem-solver
● Demonstrated ability to implement high quality instructional practices for
students.
● Desire to innovate and iterate
● A healthy frustration with the current status of secondary education
● Ability to rethink structures and staffing in service to student learning
● High standards and expectations for self and others
● Sense of humor
Pennsylvania (PA) Principal Certification:
Applicant must have a PA secondary teaching certification and be currently
enrolled in a Principal Certification program to be completed by August 2016 or
transferrable certification from another state. Information about PA principal

About Building 21:
Building 21 is a non-profit school development organization that seeks to customize
secondary education at scale. Our mission is to create a network approach to
secondary and post-secondary learning for high school age youth that fundamentally
reorients the system to place the learner at the center. This is accomplished by
utilizing time, space, tasks, and assessments in a personalized and flexible manner.
We believe that a mastery-based permeable school model that engages students
directly with post-secondary learning opportunities and authentic learning
experiences supported by technology and blended learning approaches, will be
critical levers for realizing this vision. Building 21 has entered into an agreement
with the Allentown School District (ASD) to open the second Building 21 school in
August 2015. The school will open as a high autonomy ASD public school.
September 2104, we opened our first in-district high school in partnership with the
School District of Philadelphia. The objectives of the Building 21 model are to:
● Motivate and support an array of learners to meet high academic standards, to
develop the mindsets for personal growth and success, and to obtain meaningful job-
related credentials
● Redefine the place, time, and tasks of learning
● Integrate advances in technology with the timeless fundamentals of relationships,
personal support, and proven approaches to teaching and learning
● Build new postsecondary partnerships and pathways
● Engage communities in educational and economic development
● Build a playlist of learning options including online, offline, individual, small group,
large group, skills-based, and applied learning opportunities
● Build a network of learning experiences and resources through partnerships with
individuals, community organizations, employers, and subject matter experts down
the street and across the globe
● Curate, create and organize content to support proficiency based pathways

Job Description - Assistant School Leader, Allentown

  • 1. Assistant School Leader Overview: Building 21 is seeking an experienced and creative Assistant School Leader to support the Founding School Leader in the implementation of our second high school, located in Allentown, PA. The Assistant School Leader will report to the Founding School Leader and will work collaboratively with a cross-functional team of instructors, technology experts, community members, students, parents, administrators, and representatives of industry to realize the vision of Building 21 to “customize education at scale” (see About Building 21 below for additional information). Building 21 is committed to customizing learning for each student through: strong relationships; a competency-based system; the robust use of technology as a means, not an end, to improved teaching and learning; and learning opportunities based on the interests and passions of students. Building 21’s model includes a highly collaborative structures for teachers, students and partners; and community-embedded learning experiences. The second Building 21 School will open as a high autonomy, in-district public school in the Allentown School District (ASD) in August 2015. The school will open with approximately 150 students and will grow to 600 students over four years. The ideal candidate for Assistant School Leader will possess the following beliefs, mindsets and characteristics: ● Belief that building strong and caring relationships with students and adults is the foundation upon which a successful school is built. ● Deep commitment to positive youth development and an unwavering faith in the potential of every student. ● Fundamental belief that, with the right supports and expectations, every student has the ability to design their own path to success in the post- secondary world. ● Strong desire to support and design authentic problem-based/project-based learning experiences and performance assessments to increase students exposure to different fields of study. ● Willingness to implement and oversee learning through a competency-based approach.
  • 2. ● Strong technology skills and the belief in using a one-to-one model to support personalized learning for students. ● Comfort with utilizing multiple types of data. ● Comfort with change, iteration and ambiguity. ● A growth mindset, understanding that failure is the path to success. ● Commitment to working on personal growth and continuous learning. ● Willingness to collaborate, design and co-teach with community and business partners. ● Willingness to challenge traditional mindsets and beliefs about what school is and what school is not. ● Willingness to contribute to a collaborative culture that challenges and supports each other. Responsibilities: Culture and Climate Leadership ● Establish and maintain a safe, supportive, trusting and welcoming culture and climate for the school, families, and the extended community. ● Model and encourage teachers, students, and staff to develop a restorative mindset and create a school-wide approach to conflict management. ● Passionately communicate the Building 21 mission and vision to faculty, students, members of the community, and other stakeholders. ● Intentionally build and maintain structures for authentic family, parent and community engagement in the school. ● Engage in a learning community with other school developers and school leaders in Allentown. ● Develop and sustain partnerships in the network to support student-learning pathways. Design Process ● Participate in cross-functional design team to adapt the Building 21 competency framework, instructional model, assessment system, student and adult induction process, and professional development program. ● Work with Founding School Leader and community & industry partners to develop applied learning opportunities. ● Work with teachers and staff to embed and fully integrate technology into the instructional model and operational processes of the school.   • 3. ● Ensure that the pedagogy and instructional model of the school reflect the values, vision and mission of Building 21. ● Establish a rigorous and engaging learning environment that couples high standards with necessary supports. ● Ensure deliberate and meaningful integration of community-based and problem-based learning experiences such as work-based internships and service learning opportunities into the school-based learning experience ● Model and foster a culture of transparency, risk-taking, continuous learning, and collaboration. ● Create structures for inquiry and teamwork among faculty and students. ● Support the ongoing development of the curriculum and instructional model as the school grows. ● Work with team to develop and to implement a system of formative and summative assessments that support student and teacher growth and learning. ● Develop leadership skills to support teachers’ implementation of blended learning. Operational Leadership: ● Facilitate day-to-day activities in the school. ● Problem-solve creatively to assist with parent/student/teacher concerns. ● Facilitate all communications with parents/students/teachers/community (i.e. website, Twitter, Facebook,…) ● Be available for evening events. ● Hold self and others accountable for personal, professional, and community (school) growth. Required Qualifications and Experience ● At least five years of teaching/leadership experience ● Fierce belief in the potential of young people ● Fluent in the Spanish language is a plus ● Proficient with technology ● Demonstrated ability to communicate well with a wide variety of people. ● A growth mindset ● Highly collaborative ● A demonstrated personal commitment to life-long learning. ● An inquiry stance

September 2104, we opened our first in-district high school in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia. The objectives of the Building 21 model are to: ● Motivate and support an array of learners to meet high academic standards, to develop the mindsets for personal growth and success, and to obtain meaningful job- related credentials ● Redefine the place, time, and tasks of learning ● Integrate advances in technology with the timeless fundamentals of relationships, personal support, and proven approaches to teaching and learning ● Build new postsecondary partnerships and pathways ● Engage communities in educational and economic development ● Build a playlist of learning options including online, offline, individual, small group, large group, skills-based, and applied learning opportunities ● Build a network of learning experiences and resources through partnerships with individuals, community organizations, employers, and subject matter experts down the street and across the globe ● Curate, create and organize content to support proficiency based pathways
