Under Dr. M. Schmitter-Edgecombe,
August 2015 – May 2016
Contribute to the SHiB (Smart Home in a Box) research
project, which evaluates effectiveness of home sensors along
with looking at how different compensatory strategies are
used.
Experience with scoring a variety of tests.
Assisted Grad students by giving them someone to practice
testing on.
Analyzed participant data and provided rankings of below
average,average,superior, etc.
Use SPSS to find the correlation coefficient and sum of
squares (SS) of the data.
Assisted in teaching a fellow RA on how to score the variety
of tests used in the study.

Under A. S. Crandall, D. Cook, & M. Schmitter-Edgecombe
August 2015 – May 2016
Multidisciplinary experience working with psychology,
2. 2
computer science and engineering students.
Worked on the Smart Home in a Box (SHiB) project looking
at the evaluation of how simple or difficult it is for the older
population to install the SHiB.
Traveled within the greater Palouse area to participants’
homes to assess the installation of the SHiB by the
participants.
Travel to participants’ homes to remove the SHiB.
Worked with the IRB for an approval on a new questionnaire.
Created the new questionnaire, which is given to the
participant during the visit.
Work with a variety of different sensors.
o Relays, Server Box, Motion Sensors, Area Sensors,
Temperature Sensors, and Door Sensors
Have experience with working with the participants.
Articulated findings into a research paper that is currently
under review.
Scoring
Experience
Design Fluency - Participant fills out three different sheets
for making designs with only four lines. The first one only
connects black dots, the second one connects only white dots
and the third one connects the black and white dots
alternatively. I score and make sure there are no repetitions or
set losses and then calculate the total they got right. Then I
look at a chart for the SS for each of the three design sheets.
Then I calculate the total from the three and then find the SS
for that total score of all three.
Digit Cancellation - Score how long it took the participant to
complete the task. Also the number of hits, omissions and
errors the participants made when cancelling out the specific
digit(s).
EPT - A test with multiple choice questions that the
participant fills out. There are four topics, which consist of
shopping, transportation and two others. I score how many
they got right out of 6 for each of the topics and then give it a
score from the chart.
GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale) - score how many the
participant answered the opposite to the “correct” answer for
each question.
ILS - Participant gives responses to a variety of questions,
such as what would they do if they needed repairs done to
their house or how they would insure safety when taking a
shower. Then I score it between 0 and 2 based on the
responses.
Letter Fluency - Participant has a certain amount of time to
give as many words as they can that start with the letter F, A
and S. To score, I see if there are any repetitions or intrusions
and then calculate the total from all three categories and find
the SS on a chart.
MMAA - Participant tells the researcher at what time they
would take each of the 4 medications. To score it, I look at
the schedule they gave the researcher and give them a point
for each one that is right.
OTDL-R - Participant is told to write a check, seal the
envelope, and fill out a checkbook and various other
3. 3
activities. Then I look at the binder to score whether they did
the task or not and made sure they did it correctly from what
the researcher said.
Prospective Memory and Retrospective Memory
Questionnaire - Participant fills out a questionnaire and I
score it by finding the raw score, the PM score and the RM
score and finding the T-score for each one off of a chart.
RBANS - includes a variety of tests inside including list
learning, a story, figure copy, digit span, picture name and
some other tests. I score each one and then find the sum of
squares for each of the test for each of the tests. I also use
various charts to find the index score, attention score, total
score and such.
Temporal Order - See how many of the 8 tests in the
RBANS the participant recalled. Also the amount of time it
took the participant between each of the tests. I also find the
correlation coefficient on the computer.
WAIS-4 Digit Span – Participant repeats the numbers said to
them under three different conditions. The first is verbatim;
the second condition is to repeat the digits backwards and
lastly, to repeat the digits from smallest to largest number.
WTAR - Participant attempts to pronounce 50 different
words and then I score how many total they got correct. Then
I look at a chart in the binder to find the SS.
