7 Types of Pet Turtles
Turtles make some of the best pets!
2. 1. Box Turtle
S Box turtles have high-domed shells and non-webbed
feet, and they can live up to 80 years. Although box
turtles do not require an aquatic habitat, they do benefit
from a small wading pool and room to explore.
3. 2. Red-Eared Slider Turtle
S This cute turtle is named for the bright red stripe behind
each eye. It grows up to 12 inches in diameter and, as an
aquatic turtle, it needs an aquarium with water.
4. 3. Painted Turtle
S With green, yellow, and red colors
splattered all over its shell, the
painted turtle can add to the artistic
elements of your yard (if you
choose to let him roam around).
S They love to reside in landscape
turtle ponds, and they need 10 to
12 hours of full-spectrum lighting to
allow for basking time.
5. 4. Reeve’s Turtle
S This turtle is a good choice for a first turtle pet because it
genuinely enjoys being touched and stroked. It requires
the same type of care as the red-eared slider turtle and
the painted turtle, and it lives approximately 25 years.
6. 5. Wood Turtle
S The wood turtle’s legs have a reddish-yellow look to
them, and it has a sculpted shell that boasts shades of
brown and tan. It also can thrive in both an indoor and
outdoor enclosure, but with enough space in the indoor
one and enough shade in the outdoor one.
7. 6. Caspian Turtle
S This semiaquatic, tannish and blackish turtle loves to
hang out in ponds. Most caspian turtles range in size
from four inches to six inches, and their hardiness and
adaptability allow them to thrive in outdoor enclosures.
8. 7. Russian Tortoise
S As a critter that enjoys basking in 90 to 95 degree heat,
the Russian tortoise can only tolerate night temperatures
that stay around 60 degrees. These tortoises also prefer
low humidity climates, and they need a 75-gallon or
larger aquarium if they are going to be kept inside.
9. Caring for Your Pet Turtle
S If you’re planning on having a pet
turtle, make sure you live in the right
climate for the turtle you’re getting.
S For example, the red-eared slider
turtle needs a place to swim and relax
in, and the box turtle needs a land
environment with just a small wading
pool.
S Make sure you also have the right
turtle food (both fresh and flaked food)
to keep your turtle healthy and strong.
