The Asmat are an indigenous hunter-gatherer people living in West Papua, Indonesia, which is located on the western half of the island north of Australia. They are one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer cultures in the world. Traditional Asmat culture includes practices like nose piercing and body painting for ceremonies and warfare. However, deforestation, colonization, and assimilation are negatively impacting their way of life, and their culture as one of Earth's last traditional hunter-gatherer societies is disappearing as the modern world influences the Asmat people.
