Welcometo the first issue of FIRST PRESS.
A publication promoting all of the
programming of First Presbyterian
Church, Davenport, Iowa.
Discover is a verb, an action word,
meaning to see, get knowledge of,
learn of, find, or find out; gain sight or
knowledge of (something previously
unseen or unknown).
So how do we set forth to Discover at
FPC? First, let’s consider that it is a
verb, an action. That means we need to
be intentional about setting time aside
to do discovery work. We can be present
in worship, study groups, community
service, teaching, fellowship, leadership,
and prayer. We can be attentive to
others, showing care and concern by
listening to understand, and not simply
listening to respond.
We can embrace our denomination and
historic Reformed tradition. Presbyterians
understand the Bible to be the essential
rule of faith and practice, very much as
other Protestants do. We believe that
God exists in the trinity of the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit; that Christ
is the Son of God, the Revealer of God,
and the Savior of humanity; and that the
church is the Body of Christ in the world.
We can continue to learn and explore
faith through education. Presbyterians
believe that the Holy Spirit constantly
enlightens truth, and thus they admit
different understandings of the historical
confessions of faith. Ultimately, every
Presbyterian must find a personal
understanding of faith through study,
contemplation, and worship. A very
important principle is that “God alone is
Lord of the conscience.”
In this first issue of the First Press, you’ll
find opportunities and paths to navigate,
but leave your mind open to what more
can be discovered on your journey.
Help others Discover FPC by inviting
them to church, programs, and activities.
If you find the information in this issue
of FIRST PRESS interesting and
valuable to share, please take a copy of
it (located on the Welcome Desk) and
give one to your friends and neighbors.
On Sundays, in February we’ll have
“Discover Cards” available for you to
take and pass along to your friends and
neighbors, inviting them to visit First
Presbyterian Church.
As you navigate through these pages and
reflect on your relationship with God,
may you consider a path that allows you
to travel in grace and full of Discovery.

Ash Wednesday, February 10
Services at 12:00 NOON & 7:00 PM
Ash Wednesday is a day of solemn assembly that is
built right into the church year. It is a day for fasting,
a day of mourning for our sin and the sin of all
humanity before God, a recognition of our mortality
saved for the grace of God and a request that the
Lord remember our creation and breathe new life
into our burned-out, dusty lives once more. It marks
the beginning of our Lenten journey to remembering
God’s love for us in Jesus Christ. The season of Lent
is a time to prepare for the celebration of redemption
through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.
Taizé Worship During Lent
Wednesdays, February 17, 24, March 2,
9 and 16, at 6:30 PM, in the Chapel
The frost on the trees, the white of the snow, the chill
in the air help us to see and feel the beauty of nature.
For those of us in the Midwest, we have the joy of
experiencing the extremes of the seasons. At the same
time, we need to have continuity within our lives.

Meditation can provide that common
thread regardless of the season we are
experiencing. Services in the style of
the Taizé Community in France,
through songs which, when repeated,
become prayers within the heart,
scripture, read by worshipers, and
meditation, the quiet which allows the
person to commune with God, provide
that opportunity.
Communion is a
practice that is meant
to be observed over
and over throughout
the life of a Christian.
It is a holy time of worship when we
corporately come together as one body
to remember and celebrate what Christ
did for us. All who accept Jesus Christ
as their Savior are welcome to take
Communion. It is served on the first
Sunday of the
even months
of the year.
Baptism is a
sacrament, and
the sacraments
represent the
free grace of God. There is no charge
for having a child baptized. Call the
church office (563-326-1691) to
arrange the date of baptism and request
the appropriate forms be mailed to you.
Return those completed forms to the
church. Attend a baptismal seminar to
review the meaning of baptism and to
get oriented to the logistics of the
celebration of baptism in worship.
Maundy Thursday, March 24
Service at 7:30 PM
Maundy Thursday is the anniversary
celebration of the institution of The
Lord’s Supper. The worship service will
include the Sacrament of Communion.
The Chamber Chorale will lead in
worship through song.
Good Friday, March 25
Service of Tenebrae at 7:30 PM
This service provides an opportunity to
meditate on the crucifixion of our Lord
Jesus Christ. The service includes scriptures,
prayers, and music of the Passion featuring
the Sanctuary Choir, the Cecelian Carolers,
the Vesper Bells and orchestra.
Easter Sunday, March 27
Services at 9:00 AM & 11:00 AM
A celebration of the Resurrection Joy!
Easter Sunday special music will be
provided by the Celebration Singers and
the Sanctuary Choir. The music will
include the traditional Handel’s

Join with fellow Christians from our PUNCH churches for a prayer vigil at First Pres., on the Sundays
listed above from 7:00-7:30 PM. Please use the porte cochere entrance by the west parking lot. We will

God’s healing for victims, and let us bear witness to the senseless violence in our country.
Women of Hope Bible Study - Every other Wednesday, 10:00 AM
We are an informal group meeting to share, study the Scriptures and pray for one
another. If you have questions, please call Rev. Kristy Parker (563-590-3071).
Souper Bowl of Caring - Sunday, February 7, following each service
What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, practice kindness,
and walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8) Create a better community
by giving on Super Bowl Sunday to those in need of a meal.
Every dollar donated goes to fight hunger in the Quad Cities. The High
School youth will be in the Sanctuary to take your donations via soup pot.
Men’s Breakfast “When the Trumpet Sounds” - Saturday, April 9, 8:00 AM
Communion to the Furthest Pew is served to members unable to attend church, the week
immediately following communion at church.
Operation Love is a member-to-member outreach for those with short term needs such as
transportation, meals, emergency babysitting, or respite care.
In Touch Ministries - Congregation members provide one-on-one visits to congregation
members and friends who have difficulty leaving their homes. This ministry keeps homebound
members "in touch" with the rest of the congregation.
The Prayer Chain connects those in need of prayer with church members who are committed to
a ministry of prayer. Prayer requests may be sent to the church office and we will contact the
prayer chain coordinator.
Prayer Shawl Ministry - Attention crocheters and knitters...prayer shawls are symbolic of God’s
presence during our times of need, and the congregation’s love and support. Anyone with an
interest in knitting or crocheting a shawl is invited to make a shawl and drop it off with Tiffany.

13 Year-end Celebration! Outside
Sunday School, for grades preschool through high school, is offered
every Sunday morning September through May from 10:10-10:45 AM.
Youth in Preschool through 5th
grade follow our Lectionary Calendar in
terms of their weekly lesson, which means typically what they learn is
the same Scripture the pastor is preaching on each week. Middle School
youth use the curriculum Connect, from Sparkhouse, where their lessons
are divided into six-week segments of the Bible, which is intended to last
two years to cover all the segments. High School Sunday School works
on different curriculums each year, and are currently using QuickBooks
to go over the Book of Acts in the New Testament. Sunday School is a
lot of fun for all ages, and everyone is invited to be a part of it all!

Musikgarten
Our Musikgarten program is half-way through its third year at FPC already! And what an exciting
time it has been! We’ve been joined on a weekly basis by our youngest children (newborns to
3-year-olds), their parents and even some of their grandparents to sing, dance and play together.
Starting with the sacred-based curriculum, “My God, My Family and Me!”, we have immersed
our children in movement and music activities that are perfect for their physical and language
development. And along the way, other areas of development — creativity, family bonding,
self-esteem, confidence, emotional development — have also been growing.
Musikgarten's philosophy is steeped in this understanding: movement and music activities
are perfect for child development; music immerses the child in language; evokes
movement; stimulates the brain; and fosters physical coordination -- all in a group
setting that builds a God-centered, musical community -- a truly holistic experience.
We now have three age-specific classes available. Our Musikgarten Babies class, led
by Kathy Middleton, is for parents and newborns to 18-month-old children. Each class
features bouncing and rocking songs, wiggle and peek-a-boo games, and fun age-specific
activities. This class meets in the Toddler room on third floor of the education wing.
Musikgarten Toddlers, led by Adam Page, is for parents and toddlers up to age 3. Each lesson
features movement activities for coordination, body awareness and control, exploration of space,
and instruments such as rhythm sticks, jingles and rattles. This class meets in the Parlor.
Our Musikgarten for 3-year-olds class meets in our newly refurbished Angels Room 307 on third
floor of the education wing and is led by Anne Page. Parents and their 3-year-olds participate
together in focused listening, musical games, playing instruments, moving and singing.
All classes meet from 10:15-10:45 AM and follow the Sunday School schedule. If you have questions
or would like more information, please contact Kathy Middleton (kmidd@mchsi.com or 563-505-0471).

Fun “To Do” Opportunities
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper - February 9, 5:00 PM
Before Lent, why not enjoy some pancakes on “Fat Tuesday?” So come and
enjoy a delicious hot pancake supper. There is no charge, but donations will
be accepted. Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. As in
contemporary times, food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk, and fish were
regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted,
many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order to consume
those items that would inevitably become spoiled during the next forty days.
Trivia Night - Saturday, February 20, 6:30 -10:00 PM
The high school youth of FPC have plans to attend Triennium this year, at Purdue University. The cost of this international

and fellowship while you show your support to FPC youth. PLEASE: don’t bring food, refreshments will be
available for purchase. For more information, contact Tiffany Horvath (horvath@fpcdavenport.org).

Throughout the Church’s history, in both good and difficult times, faithful members have financially
supported the Church’s work. This has enabled the Church to share God’s love for more than
175 years. But long-term stability continues to be an issue. Each year during the annual
Stewardship Campaign, the Church starts from zero to raise the necessary resources to sustain its
work for the coming year and each year there are many unknowns which impact annual giving.
The goal of the Foundation is to provide for future needs which cannot be met through the annual
campaign. The Foundation provides opportunities for members to extend their giving, perhaps
for use beyond their own lifetimes. It gives today’s faithful Christians an opportunity to leave a
heartfelt legacy for subsequent generations of believers.
All members are welcome to attend. RSVPs will be taken by the church office in March 2016.

Appreciative Inquiry
Recently, we introduced the mission of the Envisioning 20/20 team, which is:
Listening to each other and the congregation to discover God's vision for First
Presbyterian Church.
At the same time, Richard re-introduced The Prayer of Examen (The Purple Prayer)
-- and he encouraged everyone to join the Envisioning 20/20 team in using it to
help us quiet our hearts and minds and enter into authentic and transparent prayer
with God.
We now want to introduce the philosophy that is guiding much of the work of the
team, Appreciative Inquiry -- which focuses on positive outcomes and successes as
the basis for discussion and planning. Our consultant, Rev. Jim Kitchens, will use
Appreciative Inquiry as he leads us in our congregation-wide discussions.
This approach may be different from other long-range planning you might have
experienced. The questions you will be asked to consider may be different from
ones you have been asked before. The first assumption in Appreciative Inquiry is
that all churches do something well.
Appreciative Inquiry is an approach that asks us to share what works in our church and
appreciate it. This process will generate a series of statements that describe where First
Pres. wants to be, based on the high moments of where we have been. Because the
statements are grounded in real experience and history, we will know how to repeat
their success.
You’re invited and encouraged to attend each of these gatherings. The Envisioning 20/20
team will be there to listen to you.
There will be three congregational gatherings facilitated by Rev. Jim Kitchens
during which we will look at Where We Have Been (January 10), Where We are Now
(February 14), and Where We’d like to Be in the Future (March 6). Those gatherings
will be in Fellowship Hall at 11:00 AM. A light meal will be served. Child care
through middle school age will be provided.
If you have questions, please speak with one of the Envisioning 20/20 Team: Liz
Terrill, Harry Hoyt, Merriam Rink, Jim Keenan, Cindy Meinert, Mark Jones, Kathy
Bowerman, Ted Brown, Pam Paulsen, or Kurt Schreiner.

anything new? Contact diane Pumphrey (563-326-1691, ext. 205;

The next FPC programming, planning and calendarization meeting
will be on Thursday, February 25 at 6:00 -7:00 PM. Committees are
now meeting to plan programming and events out for the year. Plans
will be communicated to church leadership and the staff. The online calendar will be a tool
for planning and communicating. Project managers for events will be designated six months
ahead of time. The next FIrST PrESS (outlining the programming for June throughAugust)
theme is Renew and will be published the end of May. Articles for that publication are due to
diane Pumphrey (pumphrey@fpcdavenport.org) byApril 1, 2016.

face, welcoming and accepting you, as we explore
our faith journeys together.

  • 2. DISCOVER Welcometo the first issue of FIRST PRESS. A publication promoting all of the programming of First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, Iowa. Discover is a verb, an action word, meaning to see, get knowledge of, learn of, find, or find out; gain sight or knowledge of (something previously unseen or unknown). So how do we set forth to Discover at FPC? First, let’s consider that it is a verb, an action. That means we need to be intentional about setting time aside to do discovery work. We can be present in worship, study groups, community service, teaching, fellowship, leadership, and prayer. We can be attentive to others, showing care and concern by listening to understand, and not simply listening to respond. We can embrace our denomination and historic Reformed tradition. Presbyterians understand the Bible to be the essential rule of faith and practice, very much as other Protestants do. We believe that God exists in the trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; that Christ is the Son of God, the Revealer of God, and the Savior of humanity; and that the church is the Body of Christ in the world. We can continue to learn and explore faith through education. Presbyterians believe that the Holy Spirit constantly enlightens truth, and thus they admit different understandings of the historical confessions of faith. Ultimately, every Presbyterian must find a personal understanding of faith through study, contemplation, and worship. A very important principle is that “God alone is Lord of the conscience.” In this first issue of the First Press, you’ll find opportunities and paths to navigate, but leave your mind open to what more can be discovered on your journey. Help others Discover FPC by inviting them to church, programs, and activities. If you find the information in this issue of FIRST PRESS interesting and valuable to share, please take a copy of it (located on the Welcome Desk) and give one to your friends and neighbors. On Sundays, in February we’ll have “Discover Cards” available for you to take and pass along to your friends and neighbors, inviting them to visit First Presbyterian Church. As you navigate through these pages and reflect on your relationship with God, may you consider a path that allows you to travel in grace and full of Discovery. Discover! A place to belong! Where faith is nurtured, curiosity is encouraged, diversity is welcomed, and all are loved. JAN FEB MAR Ash Wednesday, February 10 Services at 12:00 NOON & 7:00 PM Ash Wednesday is a day of solemn assembly that is built right into the church year. It is a day for fasting, a day of mourning for our sin and the sin of all humanity before God, a recognition of our mortality saved for the grace of God and a request that the Lord remember our creation and breathe new life into our burned-out, dusty lives once more. It marks the beginning of our Lenten journey to remembering God’s love for us in Jesus Christ. The season of Lent is a time to prepare for the celebration of redemption through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Taizé Worship During Lent Wednesdays, February 17, 24, March 2, 9 and 16, at 6:30 PM, in the Chapel The frost on the trees, the white of the snow, the chill in the air help us to see and feel the beauty of nature. For those of us in the Midwest, we have the joy of experiencing the extremes of the seasons. At the same time, we need to have continuity within our lives. 3 “Seeing and Believing” 10 “Finding Fish and Feeding Sheep” 17 “Inherit the Wind” 24 “And the Greatest of These is Love” 1 Youth Sunday 8 “We Are One” 15 “When Goodbye is Good News” 22 “The Trouble With the Truth” 29 “Thy Kingdom Come” APR MAY 2 Meditation can provide that common thread regardless of the season we are experiencing. Services in the style of the Taizé Community in France, through songs which, when repeated, become prayers within the heart, scripture, read by worshipers, and meditation, the quiet which allows the person to commune with God, provide that opportunity. Communion is a practice that is meant to be observed over and over throughout the life of a Christian. It is a holy time of worship when we corporately come together as one body to remember and celebrate what Christ did for us. All who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior are welcome to take Communion. It is served on the first Sunday of the even months of the year. Baptism is a sacrament, and the sacraments represent the free grace of God. There is no charge for having a child baptized. Call the church office (563-326-1691) to arrange the date of baptism and request the appropriate forms be mailed to you. Return those completed forms to the church. Attend a baptismal seminar to review the meaning of baptism and to get oriented to the logistics of the celebration of baptism in worship.

And what an exciting time it has been! We’ve been joined on a weekly basis by our youngest children (newborns to 3-year-olds), their parents and even some of their grandparents to sing, dance and play together. Starting with the sacred-based curriculum, “My God, My Family and Me!”, we have immersed our children in movement and music activities that are perfect for their physical and language development. And along the way, other areas of development — creativity, family bonding, self-esteem, confidence, emotional development — have also been growing. Musikgarten's philosophy is steeped in this understanding: movement and music activities are perfect for child development; music immerses the child in language; evokes movement; stimulates the brain; and fosters physical coordination -- all in a group setting that builds a God-centered, musical community -- a truly holistic experience. We now have three age-specific classes available. Our Musikgarten Babies class, led by Kathy Middleton, is for parents and newborns to 18-month-old children. Each class features bouncing and rocking songs, wiggle and peek-a-boo games, and fun age-specific activities. This class meets in the Toddler room on third floor of the education wing. Musikgarten Toddlers, led by Adam Page, is for parents and toddlers up to age 3. Each lesson features movement activities for coordination, body awareness and control, exploration of space, and instruments such as rhythm sticks, jingles and rattles. This class meets in the Parlor. Our Musikgarten for 3-year-olds class meets in our newly refurbished Angels Room 307 on third floor of the education wing and is led by Anne Page. Parents and their 3-year-olds participate together in focused listening, musical games, playing instruments, moving and singing. All classes meet from 10:15-10:45 AM and follow the Sunday School schedule. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Kathy Middleton (kmidd@mchsi.com or 563-505-0471). • 9. Fun “To Do” Opportunities Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper - February 9, 5:00 PM Before Lent, why not enjoy some pancakes on “Fat Tuesday?” So come and enjoy a delicious hot pancake supper. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted. Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. As in contemporary times, food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk, and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order to consume those items that would inevitably become spoiled during the next forty days. Foundation of First Presbyterian Church hosts the Kirkwood Tower Circle Recognition Celebration Sunday, April 3, 2016 from 12:30 to 2:30 PM Lardner Balcony at the Putman Museum 1717 W 12th St, Davenport, IA 52804 Guest Speaker is Minner Serovy from the national Presbyterian Foundation A light brunch will be served Throughout the Church’s history, in both good and difficult times, faithful members have financially supported the Church’s work. This has enabled the Church to share God’s love for more than 175 years. But long-term stability continues to be an issue. Each year during the annual Stewardship Campaign, the Church starts from zero to raise the necessary resources to sustain its work for the coming year and each year there are many unknowns which impact annual giving. The goal of the Foundation is to provide for future needs which cannot be met through the annual campaign. The Foundation provides opportunities for members to extend their giving, perhaps for use beyond their own lifetimes. It gives today’s faithful Christians an opportunity to leave a heartfelt legacy for subsequent generations of believers. All members are welcome to attend. RSVPs will be taken by the church office in March 2016. • 11. &Envisioning 20/20 Appreciative Inquiry Recently, we introduced the mission of the Envisioning 20/20 team, which is: Listening to each other and the congregation to discover God's vision for First Presbyterian Church. At the same time, Richard re-introduced The Prayer of Examen (The Purple Prayer) -- and he encouraged everyone to join the Envisioning 20/20 team in using it to help us quiet our hearts and minds and enter into authentic and transparent prayer with God. We now want to introduce the philosophy that is guiding much of the work of the team, Appreciative Inquiry -- which focuses on positive outcomes and successes as the basis for discussion and planning. Our consultant, Rev. Jim Kitchens, will use Appreciative Inquiry as he leads us in our congregation-wide discussions. This approach may be different from other long-range planning you might have experienced. The questions you will be asked to consider may be different from ones you have been asked before. The first assumption in Appreciative Inquiry is that all churches do something well. Appreciative Inquiry is an approach that asks us to share what works in our church and appreciate it. This process will generate a series of statements that describe where First Pres. wants to be, based on the high moments of where we have been. Because the statements are grounded in real experience and history, we will know how to repeat their success. You’re invited and encouraged to attend each of these gatherings. The Envisioning 20/20 team will be there to listen to you. There will be three congregational gatherings facilitated by Rev. Jim Kitchens during which we will look at Where We Have Been (January 10), Where We are Now (February 14), and Where We’d like to Be in the Future (March 6). Those gatherings will be in Fellowship Hall at 11:00 AM. A light meal will be served. Child care through middle school age will be provided. If you have questions, please speak with one of the Envisioning 20/20 Team: Liz Terrill, Harry Hoyt, Merriam Rink, Jim Keenan, Cindy Meinert, Mark Jones, Kathy Bowerman, Ted Brown, Pam Paulsen, or Kurt Schreiner. Tell us what you think about this publication. did you Discover anything new? Contact diane Pumphrey (563-326-1691, ext. 205; pumphrey@fpcdavenport.org) to share your thoughts and comments. The next FPC programming, planning and calendarization meeting will be on Thursday, February 25 at 6:00 -7:00 PM. Committees are now meeting to plan programming and events out for the year. Plans will be communicated to church leadership and the staff. The online calendar will be a tool for planning and communicating. Project managers for events will be designated six months ahead of time. The next FIrST PrESS (outlining the programming for June throughAugust) theme is Renew and will be published the end of May. Articles for that publication are due to diane Pumphrey (pumphrey@fpcdavenport.org) byApril 1, 2016.
