Railways Station and Yards
• Purposes of railway station
• Site selection for railway station
• Requirements of railway station
• Classification of stations
• Classification of Yards
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Purposes of railway station
• For exchange of passengers
• For exchange of goods
• For control of train movements
• For crossing
• For overtaking
• For detaching engines and staff
• For taking diesel or coal and water for locomotives
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Site selection for railway station
• Land Acquisition
• Proximity to town or village
• Nature of land area
• Approach roads to station
Site
• Station site alignment
• Site Drainage
• Station Amenities
• Type of station and Yard
• Role of Authorities
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Acquisition of Land
• Sufficient land area including land width for a
single track or double track system and extra
area to accommodate additional line, station
buildings, platforms, cabins, staff quarters, future
extension etc.
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Proximity
• The station site should be close to the town or
village as far as possible to facilitate the
transport of passengers and goods.
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Nature of Land
• The land area should preferably be a level ground
for convenient and safety of marshalling and
shunting wagons.
• In India, maximum permissible gradient for all
gauges, in station yards is 1 in 400, with desirable
value of 1 in 1000.
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Approach Road
• It is highly essential to encourage rail transport by
providing approach roads connecting a town or
village to station site.
• Maximum transport facilities should be provided
for the type of traffic likely to be handled by the
approach roads.
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Station Site Alignment
• Station site should never be located on curves
and as far as possible should not be near the
curve too.
• The alignment of track for both approaching and
departing trains should be straight otherwise the
signals will either be difficult to sight or out of
sight.
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Site Drainage and
Station Amenities
• The site should have quick drainage facilities and
minimum grade of 1 in 1000 is recommended for
this purpose.
• Amenities like water supply, coal, diesel, electricity
etc. should be provided at
the station site.
• A plentiful supply of drinkable
water is essential.
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Requirements of a Railway
Station
• Public Requirements
• Traffic and Police
• Trains
• Locomotives
• Development of railways
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College

• Easy and comfortable approach
roads to stations
• Installation of clocks, guide map,
separate boards for arrival and
departure of trains
• Availability of coolies on the
platforms
• Escalators, mini theatre , big
waiting halls, under ground
passages etc.,
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Classification of stations
• Least expenditure with regard to the provision of
the least number of signals
• Flexibility in shunting operations
• Increasing the line capacity
• Faster movement of trains
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Classification of stations
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Operational Consideration
• Block Station
- A block station is a station at which the driver has
to obtain an 'authority to proceed' in order to enter
the next block section.
- The entire railway line is divided into convenient
block sections of 5 to 10 km and a block station is
provided at the end of each block.
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Operational Consideration
• Non-block stations
- Non-block stations are located between two
block stations and do not form the boundary of any
block section.
- No signals are provided at D class stations
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College
Functional Consideration
• The layout of stations varies in size and
importance according to the type and
volume of traffic handled and according to
their locations with respect to cities or
industrial areas
• Broadly speaking, the layouts required for
passenger stations and their yards can be
divided into the following categories for the
purpose of study.

  • 4. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Purposes of railway station • For exchange of passengers • For exchange of goods • For control of train movements • For crossing • For overtaking • For detaching engines and staff • For taking diesel or coal and water for locomotives
  • 5. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Site selection for railway station • Land Acquisition • Proximity to town or village • Nature of land area • Approach roads to station Site • Station site alignment • Site Drainage • Station Amenities • Type of station and Yard • Role of Authorities
  • 6. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Acquisition of Land • Sufficient land area including land width for a single track or double track system and extra area to accommodate additional line, station buildings, platforms, cabins, staff quarters, future extension etc.
  • 7. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Proximity • The station site should be close to the town or village as far as possible to facilitate the transport of passengers and goods.
  • 8. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Nature of Land • The land area should preferably be a level ground for convenient and safety of marshalling and shunting wagons. • In India, maximum permissible gradient for all gauges, in station yards is 1 in 400, with desirable value of 1 in 1000.
  • 9. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Approach Road • It is highly essential to encourage rail transport by providing approach roads connecting a town or village to station site. • Maximum transport facilities should be provided for the type of traffic likely to be handled by the approach roads.
  • 10. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Station Site Alignment • Station site should never be located on curves and as far as possible should not be near the curve too. • The alignment of track for both approaching and departing trains should be straight otherwise the signals will either be difficult to sight or out of sight.
  • 11. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Site Drainage and Station Amenities • The site should have quick drainage facilities and minimum grade of 1 in 1000 is recommended for this purpose. • Amenities like water supply, coal, diesel, electricity etc. should be provided at the station site. • A plentiful supply of drinkable water is essential.
  • 12. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Requirements of a Railway Station • Public Requirements • Traffic and Police • Trains • Locomotives • Development of railways
  • 13. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Public Requirements • A booking office for tickets • Goods and passenger platforms • Drinking water • Lighting and ventilation • Waiting rooms and retiring rooms • Sanitary arrangements and bath rooms • Refrigerators for cold drinking water • City map or guide map • Display boards

  • 20. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Operational Consideration • Block Station - A block station is a station at which the driver has to obtain an 'authority to proceed' in order to enter the next block section. - The entire railway line is divided into convenient block sections of 5 to 10 km and a block station is provided at the end of each block.
  • 21. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Operational Consideration • Non-block stations - Non-block stations are located between two block stations and do not form the boundary of any block section. - No signals are provided at D class stations
  • 22. Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College Functional Consideration • The layout of stations varies in size and importance according to the type and volume of traffic handled and according to their locations with respect to cities or industrial areas • Broadly speaking, the layouts required for passenger stations and their yards can be divided into the following categories for the purpose of study.
