- Just a few words about me. My name is Marcus Doerfer, I´m 37 years old, I live in Hamburg and employed at Kempchen as a Sales-Representative in Northern-Germany.
- As you can see in the agenda, the today´s presentation will give you informations about our Strategy TheClean Air Act, Our calculation-program KemProof, Types of gaskets Leakage in comparison And KemAnalysis
- This is an overview of the Klinger-companies with it´s 3 Business-Units: Fluid Control / Industrial Sealing / Service & Distribution. With more than 2.000 employees and a Turnover of about 400 Million Euro. Kempchen is a member of the group of independent KLINGER-companies since 2004.
- (Klick) Kempchen has 6 locations in Germany. The Head of the Kempchen-Production is in Oberhausen in the Rhein/Ruhe-Area close to Düsseldorf. (Klick) To be close to the customer, we build up small facilities with stock and emergency-production.
- … we engage 220 employees and work in 3-shift operation. Specialized in the production of metal gaskets, packings and compensators. We offer a worldwide shipping and our volume of sales is about 35 Million EUR.

- Based on that we are able to produce and to offer the whole range of static gaskets, from an easy cutted soft gasket up to a High-Performance metal-gasket. 1. Metallic gaskets made of stainless-steel, Hastelloy or Inconel 2. Metal jacketed gaskets 3. Spiral-wound gaskets 4. Cover-plate gaskets 5. Rubber-Steel gaskets 6. Flat soft gaskets 7. PTFE 8. Packings & Compensators
- This is the today´s standard or national law in Germany. We have the Federal Emission Control Law, the Federal Emission Control Ordinance, the Clean Air Act and the VDI 2200 + VDI 2440, which are amended by the VID 2290 since June 2012.
- The VDI2290 ist valid for: 1. All metallic flanges 2. Flange connections of all industrial branches 3. Liquid and gaseous media 4. And for a maximum working temperature of 400°C, because the evaluation of the gasket-values was only possible in the past up to 400°C by the testing-equipment. Today we are able to test of a maximum-temperature of 500°C and a pressure-rate of 160 bar. Excluded are flanges without screws, compact flange connections without gaskets, Enamel-, Plastic-, and Plastic-lined flanges.
- This is to show you the difference between the old and new standard. To fullfill the TA-Luft, a TA-Luft certified gasket was required, a Stress-analyis of the flange according to the basic rules of AD Datasheet 2000 with the result of 0,1 leakage. To fullfill the Clean Air Act including the VDI 2290, a TA-Luft certified gasket is also required, the Sealing-values based on Euro-Norm 13555, a sealing-proof and stress analysis according to Euro-Norm 1591-1 and the assembling will be done by certified fitters according to preEN 1591-4. What you finally receive is a leakage of 0,01.
- To illustrate, what this means – This is for an example-flange with an outside-diameter of 320 mm. With the leakage of L 0,1 we had a mass loss at the flange of about 3 kg per year. Now with the leakage of L 0,01 we have a mass loss of about 300 gram per year.
- This is just a fact for you. Pipelines in German refineries have an annual loss of 2,4 million tons as fugitive emissions.
- Now under considering of the VDI twenty-two-ninety, the fugitive emissions will decrease to an annual loss of two-hundred-and-forty-thousand tons

- First you choose a DIN or ANSI flange. Actual we have the DIN and ANSI engineer-standars in our database, including the borderline-values of toughness according to EN 1092. You can also create a flange beyond the norm. Then you enter the nominal pressure and the nominal diameter. Maximum bold load is in accordance to EN 1092. Then step forward to the next slide….
- On this slide, you select the bolt. If you choose a norm-flange, the number of bolts and the dimension is proposed, what is foreseen according to the Norm-Standard. You can also see a small drawing of the bolt – normal shank or reduced shank. And this is the selection of the bolt-material and you can see the yield-limit in accordance to the different temperature. Step forward to the next slide….
- Now it´s necessary to enter the operating and testing pressures, the operating temperature as well as the obtained leakage-class. We suggest a bolt-working load of 70% to keep the spring-character in the total connecting-system. Step forward to the next slide…
- On this slide you enter the profile-type, the cover-layer and the kind of gaskets. A choice of gaskets is located on the right side. Background of this program is a calculation-algorithm in due consideration sealing-values based on Euro-Norm 13555. Step forward to the next slide…

- On this sheet you will find every information of your calculation you just accomplished. The necessary initial torque, detailed informations about the bolts, the flange, the operating data, the gasket and the gasket parameters according to Euronorm 13555.
- There are 3 advantages of a highest possible bolt-force: 1. Lowest possible leakage in operation 2. Highest remaining surface-pressure in operation 3. Blow-out security
- Now I would like to introduce you 3 different types of standard piping gaskets in greater detail.
- I will start with the Spiral-wound gasket. These gaskets have long been used as sealing elements in Refineries / Chemical Plants and in the Pipeline Engineering. We can produce the spiral-wound gasket with a seamless outring of 1.500 mm
- The advantages of our Spiral-wound gaskets are as follows: 1. Our products have a higher temperature-stability – because of usage of graphite-foils with a purity level of minimum 99% 2. We have a high variety of material due to a comprehensive raw materials-warehouse. 3. We can guarantee a high flexibility because all necessary manufacturing technologies are available.
- The next gasket is the Corrugated gasket. Corrugated gaskets with layers are universally applicable sealing elements and even proper for unmachined flanges. These gaskets are typically used for Refineries, Chemical- and Petrochemical Plants. It is generally a fantastic gasket, because of it´s best adaptability to the flange, it´s cost-effective and it´s better leakage than a spiral-wound gasket.
- 1. Our corrugated gaskets was developed in cooperation with SHELL and are field-proven for many years. 2. Safe and repeatable compound of core and layer by automation 3. Only graphite-foils with a quality of 99% are in use 4. Safe and repeatable corrugated pitches by precision tools 5. and a traceable marking.
- Now I will introduce the grooved gaskets. Grooved gaskets have also been used to great success in Refineries, in Petrochemical-, Chemical-, and Nuclear Power Plants. Especially in places where are high pressures and temperatures
- Why a grooved gasket from Kempchen? 1. Due to special manufacturing processes, the grooved tops and valleys run exactly parallel 2. We ensure automatic, safe & reproducible connections of core and layer 3. A high flexibility due to stockable raw material variety 4. And a reliable service due to the fact, that everything is made in own production
- This is a core of our grooved gasket. The peaks of the groove are on one level and the valleys are 100% parallel to them.
- We permanently control the cores with a profile gauge
- Here you can see a structure of a competitor´s core, we measured. The surface is totally deformed and the grooved tops and valleys don´t run exactly parallel – so a constant surface-pressure is not ensured.
- This is a structure of a core of a Kempchen-gasket. As you can see, the grooved tops and valleys run exactly parallel with a right deepness and a right distance of the groove. And this geometry is in accordance to European-Standard 1514 Part 6.
- The layer of a grooved gasket has a thickness of 0,5 mm. After the layer is chambered, the layer has a thickness of about 0,1 mm or 0,2 mm.
- The Kempchen product reaches the leakage of 10 to the power of minus 4 with a surface pressure of about 50 Newton per square millimetre, while the competitors product needs a surface pressure of nearly 100 Newton per square milimetre to reach the same leakage. This means, this is a double of force, you never get - especially in heat-exchanger flanges.
- The leakage rate of a gasket depends on different factors such as: 1. The medium, the pressure and temperature 2. The type of gasket 3. The sealing material 4. The bolt force and surface pressure 5. The quality of the flanges 6. And the assembling
- This is to show you a comparison of the leakage of the introduced 3 types of gaskets.
- On the left side, you see the leakage and on the x-axis you see the torque in Newtonmeters. The first red-line is the maximum-load of an Euro-flange and the second red-line is the maximum-load of an ASME-flange, in this example DN 40. The blue lines illustrate the maximum-load of different materials of bolts. You can see the different performance in leakage of the different gasket types. With the same force of about 130 Newton-meters, the grooved gasket reaches the best leakage. The reason for these different results are the different structures of the gasket types
- The task is to analyse the surface of the flange – especially if the flanges are badly accessible and/or the surface of the flange is not visible to evaluate the flange. 17.06.13
- Therefore Kempchen developed KemAnalysis. KemAnalysis is not a gasket, it´s a procedure to analyse sealing surfaces to assess the surface pressure distribution. 1. It provides knowledge about the deformation of the flange. 2. It shows the influence of damages on the sealing behaviour. 3. It determines necessary repairing–measures and the best possible sealing configuration.
- It consists of a steel core in the middle, a pressure-sensitive paper and a graphite layer. Here you can see an area of low surface pressure and this is a shape of deformation.
- This is also a good sample to show, how KemAnalysis works. Here you can see the shapes of the flange in the graphite. The more red the pressure-sensitive paper is, the better is the surface pressure on the flange.
- This shows an example of a damaged spot on the flange. The white dot shows the surface-pressure is almost zero. This is the imprint of the damaged spot in the flange.
- It´s also possible to analyse KemAnalysis by the standard-software of the pressure-sensitive manufacturer to get an accurate result of the surface-pressure.
