3. Background
Introduced by pryor and webber.
Active airway clearance technique to remove secretion and improve lung function and
effectiveness of cough.

4. 3 phases
1. Breathing Control
2. Thoracic Expansion Exercise
3. Huffing or Forced Expiratory
Technique (FET)

5. 1. Breathing Control
Ask patient to breath in relaxed manner with tidal volume breath.
This phase will lasts till patient feels relaxed and ready for next phase.(usually 6
breaths)
This phase will relax airway.

6. 2. Thoracic Expansion Exercise
Ask patient to breath at inspiratory reserve volume.
Add inspiratory hold of 2-3 second at the end of each breath.
Repeat cycle for 3-5 times.
This phase will loosen the secretion.

7. 3. Huffing or forced expiratory technique
Ask patient to huff after a deep inspiration.
1-2 repetition. (more repetition can tight the chest)
This phase will move the secretions from small airway to large airway.
After huff ask the patient to cough to move out secretion from large airway.

8. Patient preparation
Loose cloths
Position: sitting or postural drainage position.

Beside patient
Treatment time
7-10 minutes

9. Advantages
● It improves the lung function without increasing hypoxemia or airflow obstruction.
● It is useful for patient with gastroesophageal reflux, bronchospasm and acute
exacerbation of their pulmonary disease.
● The decrease in oxygen saturation that has been demonstrated with PD and
Percussion has been prevented by the use of ACBT.
Disadvantages
● Only active patients can do.
● Difficult for child patient to understand.
● Cannot perform soon after thoracic surgery.(hamper incision)
