3. Message From Habitat for Humanity Canada
Mark Rodgers, Acting CEO
Habitat Canada
What will you build?
Each new day, we have the opportunity to build meaning and substance into our lives. The tasks we set out to accomplish, even the
smallest things, help fill our lives with purpose and satisfaction.
When Habitat for Humanity Halton poses the question, “What will you build?” an opportunity is created to build into your life
and the lives of countless families, richer purpose and deeper satisfaction.
Through the contribution of your time, services, skills, products and dollars, you will build promising futures, help dreams come
true, and enrich the lives of many families in your community.
Without a doubt, we build far more than just houses.
Habitat for Humanity Canada is proud to support Habitat for Humanity Halton, applauds
another year of tremendous success, and joins them in asking, “What will you build?”
Message From Board Chair for Habitat Halton
Hugh Hyndman, Board Chair
Habitat Halton
messages from Habitat For humanity
Whatwillyoubuild?
As I look back at my first year as the board chair, I am astounded by what has been accomplished in
paving the way to providing decent and affordable homes to more families in Halton Region.
Habitat Halton’s 2013 theme is “What Will You Build?” and I would like to answer this question by
walking through the organization and summarizing some of its recent and planned building activities.
• We are building homes, and have an ambitious plan over the next few years. Our Milton home was
completed last summer, and we are starting Burlington and Oakville builds in the early summer.
Our hopes are to have five families in homes this year, and twenty-four in 2014.
• We are building a strong operational team, headed by John Gerrard, our new executive director.
John is striving to increase our operational capacities in order to meet our challenging goals of
2013 and moving forward into 2014.
• We are building on our experience of building single unit homes and transitioning to multi-unit
properties that cost less to build, making them more affordable to our families. Next year will see
a mixture of townhouses, condos, and semi-detached homes.
• We are building on the continued success of our ReStore. We have the highest grossing store in
Ontario, and highest contributing ReStore in Canada. Our profits fund all of our administration costs
and provide additional capital for acquiring land. By the middle of 2013, we will have expanded our
store from 11,000 sq.ft to 16,000 sq.ft, which, no doubt, will help contribute more to our cause.
• We are building our relationships with all levels of government. The individual municipalities in
Halton are supporting us both in council and various staff departments. Working with Halton Region,
we have been able to receive significant grants through the Investment in Affordable Housing (IAP)
Program. The Province of Ontario, through the Trillium program, has provided funding for our
new van. The Federal government has provided some excess land for our upcoming Oakville build.
• We are building and bolstering our land bank, providing us with a pipeline of properties on which to
build homes. Key to the success of acquiring and making optimal use of land is to form partnerships
with varying levels of government and the development community.
• We are building, retaining, and recognizing our huge number of volunteers, who work diligently at
builds, on committee meetings, at the ReStore, in the office, and on salvage teams.
• We are building partnerships with large corporations, small companies, and individuals who provide
us with their generous donations that help us put families in homes. We would like to thank our major
sponsors, such as Genworth Financial, Home Depot, Mattamy, and Siemens.
• We are building a strong and diverse governance board of directors to ensure that the affiliate meets
its strategic mission, vision, and values.
This tremendous
amount of building
could not have been
done without thanking
the hard work and
dedication of all of our
volunteers, donors,
families, partners and
staff. It is through their
“building” that we are
making a difference
in our community.
4. I would like to congratulate Habitat for Humanity on being named one of
the top charitable organizations in Canada in 2012 by MoneySense Magazine.
The extensive work that Habitat for Humanity does in Halton Region is also
recognized and appreciated by Regional Council and the residents of Halton.
You are a strong and active organization in our community and you inspire
people to get involved and help others.
Affordable and assisted housing is a key priority in Halton’s 2011-2014 Citizens’ Priorities Action Plan.
Residents have indicated this is of great importance in Halton and we are committed to finding ways to
work with other levels of government and community organizations to assist residents in need.
I look forward to continue working with Habitat for Humanity as we strive to provide affordable and
assisted housing for residents of Halton Region. You are a valued community partner and with your
support Halton will continue to be a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
Gary Carr, Regional Municipality of Halton Chair
For over ten years, Habitat Halton
and its teams of volunteers and
sponsors have offered needy
families a sense of community by
providing them with affordable
home ownership and security.
The bonds and experiences that
foster the build and the ReStore
are life-changing for Halton’s
families. Thank you to all the
partners, volunteers and sponsors
who support Halton Habitat for
Humanity and their vision of
building homes and building hope.
Mayor Gordon Krantz,
Milton
The Town of Halton Hills and
Habitat Halton for Humanity have
had a successful partnership over
the past few years by building six
homes in our community. One
of the two homes built in Acton
boasts the first pre-fabricated
house using ‘Green’ materials,
made with soy products.
The Home Ownership Program
that Habitat for Humanity offers
makes it possible for hard-working,
low-income families to purchase
a new or renovate a decent home.
Not only does Habitat provide
assistance to those in need, they
provide ownership, security and
a sense of pride.
The role that Habitat for Humanity
Halton plays in our community by
providing affordable housing
is vital. On behalf of Town Council,
I would like to thank all the
partners, volunteers and sponsors
who support Habitat for Humanity
Halton and their vision of building
affordable homes.
Mayor Rick Bonnette,
Halton Hills
“The issue of affordable housing is
one of the most significant issues
we face today. It is important to
recognize that while we live in one
of the most prosperous regions,
many families in Halton Region
are challenged with finding safe,
decent and affordable housing.
We are fortunate to partner with
Habitat for Humanity Halton to
work towards creating healthy,
sustainable communities and
vibrant neighbourhoods, where
everyone has the opportunity for
a safe and decent place to live.”

Milton Home Build,
Ground breaking
Habitat for Humanity Halton broke ground on its first build
in Milton. Halton Region Chair Gary Carr and Mayor Gordon
Krantz led the gathering of local dignitaries, sponsors and
Habitat volunteers to celebrate the latest project of Habitat
Halton, which will be completed in the summer of 2012.
Ed McMahon, Board Chair, Habitat Halton
Ginger, homeowner and

“That’s what makes it successful, is
people - volunteers and sponsors who
support Habitat for Humanity Halton
and their vision of building homes and
building hope - Thank you to all the

Milton Home Dedication -
The Oakville, Milton and District
Real Estate Board (OMDREB)
Sunday, June 24th Habitat
for Humanity Halton
welcomed a family to its
first home built in Milton
at a Dedication Ceremony.
Over 125 people were in attendance as
the new homeowners, a family of five,
were presented with a commemorative key
and welcomed to their new neighbourhood.
Habitat Halton also recognized its many hardworking
volunteers and held its Annual General Meeting
at the site.
Ginger, the new Milton homeowner, was delighted with
the support shown by the community. “Wow! What a
beautiful neighbourhood and beautiful home. Thank
you for helping my family achieve our dream,” she said,
“We understand and appreciate what went into building
this home for us. I want to thank Habitat for its vision
of providing a hand up for hard working families –
without this vision some families wouldn’t know the
pride in homeownership. I’m so grateful.”
