Dhr. S. Toivonen has worked over 20 years in the OR in the Helsinki University
hospital. Most of the time been working in the field of transplantation surgery (mostly
liver, kidney, pancreas and small intestine).
Currently working in Töölö hospital, the department of reconstructive plastic surgery.
In 2016 the first facial tissue transplantation was made in the Helsinki University
hospital. That was the first of a kind in the Nordic countries. Worldwide, the number of
face transplantations is 40.

My presentation will tell about the 32-hour operation (3 separate procedures) in Helsinki as well as some
background information about facial tissue transplantations in general. I was part of the team planning the
scheme beforehand as well as working in the harvesting operation.

mw. Mona Guckian Fisher, immediate past president of the UK Association for Perioperative
Practice (AfPP) and the current IFPNs President Elect
Mona Guckian Fisher is the immediate past president of the UK Association for
Perioperative Practice
(AfPP), and the current IFPNs President Elect; and has been involved in the delivery of
perioperative services for over 35 years. She has worked in a variety of settings from
major teaching hospitals in the NHS to multi-specialty theatres in the independent
healthcare sector. She has direct experience of many surgical disciplines and held
leadership roles in a variety of perioperative clinical areas and process improvement
projects both in the UK and Ireland; and is currently employed as Hospital Matron at the
Exeter Nuffield Health.
Mona is one of a small number of registered safety practitioners working in the healthcare sector, is a qualified
occupational health nurse and a chartered member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH).
Her special interests largely centre on the study of medical law and ethics particularly in relation to patient safety,
standards of care, staffing, competence and human behaviour. She has a Masters degree (with commendation)
in health law from Nottingham Trent University and her dissertation focused on the professional, legal and ethical
issues relating to non-medical practitioners extending skills across medical boundaries in perioperative practice.
She also provides independent expertise as required, including work as an expert witness, taking legal instruction
for both Defendant and Claimant clinical negligence cases and providing reports for Court.
Mona has served on the board of the European Operating Room Nurses Association (EORNA) 2013-2017 and
the International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN) 2014-2017. She is involved in a number of global
health care initiatives and provides education, support and expertise to help influence the direction of
perioperative services across the national and international healthcare community. In the last year she has been
to India and Africa promoting standardised practice, teamwork and patient safety in the multidisciplinary theatre
team.
Mona received the AfPP Award of Merit 2017 in recognition of her services to perioperative practice and patient
safety.

2. Professional Boundaries & Crossing The Line
The discussion will explore the challenges inherent in extended roles for non-medical practitioners in
perioperative practice; with particular focus on the Surgical First Assistant (SFA) and the factors crucial to the
provision of patient safety and the protection of perioperative healthcare professionals.
The collective power and impact of the UKs Perioperative Care Collaborative, (PCC), in surgical role definition
and extension; and introducing the updated (2018) SFA guidance and recommendations for practice.

Dr. mr. Marike Broekman is neurochirurg met als aandachtsgebied neuro-
oncologie in het UMC Utrecht en visiting professor bij de afdeling neurologie in
Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School te Boston. Haar werk
richt zich onder andere op de ethiek van chirurgische innovatie.
Dr. Broekman is de huidige president van de Ethico-Legal committee of the
European Association of Neurosurgical Societies en lid van de Ethics Committee
of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies. Zij heeft verschillende
artikelen geschreven over ethiek van chirurgische innovatie, was organisator van
the First Congress for Ethics in Neurosurgery in Stockholm afgelopen mei en zal
op korte termijn een boek over ethiek van innovatie in de neurochirurgie (Springer) uitbrengen.
Innovatie in de chirurgie: grenzenloos?
Tijdens haar presentatie op het 32e LVO congres zal zij ingaan hoe chirurgische innovatie anders is dan
geneesmiddeleninnovatie. Zij zal vertellen dat er eigenlijk weinig toezicht en regulatie is en ingaan op de
vraag of dit juist goed is of wellicht toch niet. Daarnaast zal ze de verschillende dilemma’s die bij
innovatie komen kijken bespreken en ingaan op de vraag of innovatie in de chirurgie grenzenloos is.

Professor te Velde was gynaecoloog tot aan zijn pensionering en dacht de OK goed te kennen, tot dat
hij zelf een operatie heeft ondergaan. Bij de vervanging van een hartklep bleef een gaas achter in zijn
thorax. Tot overmaat van ramp werd in het postoperatieve traject ook nog eens fouten gemaakt
waardoor niet aan de mogelijkheden van een achtergebleven gaas werd gedacht terwijl hij zieker en
zieker werd. Past vijftien dagen postoperatief werd het gaas ontdekt en verwijderd. Hij ondervindt nog
steeds last, zowel lichamelijk als geestelijk. Als arts en wetenschapper ging hij met zijn eigen casus aan
de slag en vraagt zich af “Waarom tellen jullie nog”? Het gaas bewaart hij thuis nog in de diepvries. Paul
Meijsen ontmoette deze arts die zelf het slachtoffer werd van een medische fouten en interviewt hem.

3. 12:00 Digipointeur: navigatie binnen de KNO
dr. C.H.M. Stengs M.D., PhD, KNO-arts/aangezichtschirurg (ABFPRS), Rijnstate
Ziekenhuizen, Arnhem
dr. Cor Stengs is KNO-arts in het Rijnstate ziekenhuis te Arnhem. Hij vindt KNO een heel
mooi vakgebied, waarbij je werkt met jong en oud, en zelf de diagnose en behandeling instelt.
Zoals bij de behandeling van allergieën. In de eerste lijn is dit vaak onderbelicht en wordt
immunotherapie bij de behandeling van allergieën vaak niet toegepast. Binnen de KNO heeft
het aangezichtschirurgie zijn persoonlijke interesse. Zowel de esthetiek van neus en oren, als
wel de behandeling van tumoren in het gelaat. Vooral dit laatste moet op een goede en
weloverwogen manier gebeuren en de reconstructie moet aan strikte voorwaarden voldoen.
Tijdens deze voordracht worden de werking en de voordelen van de Digipointeur besproken
bij de neusbijholten operaties.

Maarten van der Weijden, olympisch kampioen 10 km open water
Sinds zijn gouden race in 2008, geeft Maarten van der Weijden met veel succes
wekelijks presentaties aan bedrijven en ondernemers, maar ook opleidings- en
zorginstanties, om beter te worden. Hij vertelt open en gepassioneerd over zijn
bijzondere carrière en door de universele thema’s die in Maarten zijn presentaties
centraal staan, herkent ieder mens (jong, oud, man of vrouw) wel iets van zichzelf in
de verhalen die Maarten vertelt.
Onderwerpen als doorzettingsvermogen, ambitie, het omgaan met tegenslagen, innovatie,
relatie met en succesvol samenwerken komen uitgebreid aan bod. Mede door zijn carrière bij Unilever als
financieel manager weet Maarten tevens uitstekend de link tussen topsport en bedrijfsleven te leggen.

4. Accepteer pech, leef jouw leven
Als mens willen we graag geloven dat we controle hebben op ons eigen leven en dat alles wat we doen/bereiken,
het resultaat is van de keuzes die we zelf gemaakt hebben. Maar is dat wel zo? In deze presentatie vertelt
Maarten zijn visie op controle hebben op je eigen succes vanuit ervaringen uit zijn jeugd, zijn ziekteproces
(kanker) en zijn carrière als professioneel zwemmer. Zijn persoonlijke en inspirerende verhaal geeft inzicht in hoe
hij omging met zijn ziekte en wat hem motiveerde om Olympisch Kampioen te worden. Deze presentatie zal
toehoorders aanmoedigen om over hun eigen leven en sterke en minder sterke punten na te denken en hoe zij
zelf hun persoonlijke en professionele doelen willen behalen. Maartens verhaal zorgt er voor dat je publiek de
volgende dag met veel energie en motivatie wakker wordt en het beste uit zichzelf wil halen.
