Plan for magazine 4
1. Intro/Target Audience
For my magazine, I will be creating it in a print format since I prefer the physical form of the print than the online
digital format.
My magazine will be aimed towards people aged 16+ and for people who and enjoy learning and knowing more
information about films. The majority of my audience would typically be students learning about film since my
magazine will be an informative magazine. Or it could just be for people that just want to learn about film in their
spare time.
2. Inspiration
A lot of film magazines tend to use a similar layout to each other. The masthead is located in the
same place for all of these magazines and the main sell lines are in similar places too. I will follow
the codes and conventions of these magazines for my own magazine so that they are in a similar
style. This style obviously works well to attract their target audience since most film magazines are
in this style and don’t change very much.

These flat plans work for my target audience
because they follow all of the codes and
conventions of a typical magazine in this
genre. The purpose of the magazine will be
clearly shown due to the layout and will be
clear to the reader. By including the barcode
on the front cover, it shows that the platform
of my magazine will be print. Including the
folio on my double page spread also
indicates towards being a print magazine.
5. Ideas for my magazine
I am going to be making a film magazine that is showcasing an exclusive look at a new horror
film that is 'soon' to be released. The colour scheme will be mainly dark colours/black but will
also have some brighter colours that have a good contrast against the dark. Having some
vibrant colours on the magazine will help make my magazine stand out to the target audience.
I will also search for a large bold font for most of the more important things like the masthead,
main sell line and skyline.
On the front cover, the main sell line will advertise an 'exclusive' interview for an upcoming
horror movie therefore persuading the target audience to purchase since it is only available to
read in this magazine. The front cover will also feature a lot of other big name movies to attract
the attention of the audience.
The double page spread will insist of the main sell line that is on the front cover. The dominant
image will be an image that is taken behind the scenes during production therefore giving the
audience a little teaser. The sub-image will be of the director on set with a pull quote from the
exlcusive interview.
6. Primary Content
These images are unsuitable to use mainly because of
the lighting. Although they would've been perfect and
suitable for the mise-en-scene and the audience
appeal.
The problem with the lighting is that on some images
there are shadows covering parts of his face and since
my primary content is going to be an interview with
him, his whole face needs to be visable. Other issues
with these images is about what he is wearing. The hat
caused too many issues with lighting and in one of the
images, he was still wearing his college lanyard.
These are the two images that I will be using for my
magazine. The image on the left will be used on the
front cover and the image on the right will be used
for the double page spread. Both of these images
work well regarding the lighting since they
aren't too dark and not too bright. Although the
lighting does light up his face a lot, it works since
the background of both my front cover and double
page spread are black.
With my magazine being an informative film
magazine, it is suitable that both of these images
don’t feature a lot of colours and variationand is
presented in a formal style.
8. There are many legal and ethical issues to think about before creating things in the media industry.
Copyright is one of the biggest issues that the industry faces.
For my magazine, I had to be cautious when choosing my secondary content since I had not made
the content so I had to make sure that all of the images were copyright free. If the material that I
used was not copyright free and I did not get permission to use it then I could face some legal issues
with the original creator.
All of my secondary material that I have sourced is appropriate based on the genre, audience and
the purpose of my magazine. My magazine is a film magazine with the main sell line featuring a
horror film. The background of my magazine is black which fits with the horror genre and also the
the logo of the horror film is used. For the double page spread, I only use one piece of secondary
content which is an image of the film set that the magazine is featuring and that is appropriate since
my magazine is a film/cinema magazine.
Legal and Ethical Issues
9. All of the images that I have used have needed to be resized to fit where I want them. To resize the
images I selected the image, pressed alt + T and held shift as I pulled the corners of the image to
wherever it needed to be.
One of the images also needed to be cut out from the background so I used the lasso tool and
traced around the outside of the image that I needed. This same image also needed to be darkened
so that it didn’t look out of contrast to the page but luckily since the background was black, I only
needed to lower the opactiy to about 70% and then it fit.
Prepare Content
10. Final Designs
These are my final designs for both my front cover and my double page spread. Both have turned out as I planned
them to however I did want some more information and content on the double page spread. But it still works and
I am still happy with it. In conclusion, I think that the style of this magazine perfectly fits it's genre and suits its
target audience and is what I set out to make.
11. Production Log
Today I started the production of creating my front cover for my print magazine. I
started out by using the lasso tool to cut the background out from behind the
picture of Sam. I then placed the image of the house from the horror film
'Hereditary in the background in since it will be used as the dominant image. then
placed the cut out of Sam in the place I wanted him to be.
I then searched the internet for a barcode generator to place on the bottom middle
of my magazine. I used a barcode generator so that I could use the name of my
magazine as the code and so that I could avoid copyright issues. The barcode is one
of the most important features of my magazine because it is a key feature that
print magazines have to distinguish the difference between print and digital.
12. Today I have added the masthead and the tagline. I have chosen a large bold font that
has a classic film look to it since this is a film magazine and it is also clear for the
audience to see. For the colour, I have went with a yellow that is the same as the yellow
lighting used in the dominant image so that the whole front cover will have a similar
colour pallet and not look out of place.
I have now added logo of the film that will be main sell line. I won't keep it in the
position that it is in now since I will need to add text to add more to the main sell line. I
have also added three other film titles to the skyline to create some more interest points
for the target audience. I chose to make them a different colour so that there was a little
bit of variation of colours and so it didn’t look plain. I also made them a different colour
so that you could distinguish the skyline to the masthead. I have also changed the
opacity of the cut-out of Sam to around 70% so that he has a better contrast to
everything on the page. Before he was a little too bright.
13. I have now completed the main sell line by adding "EXCLUSIVE interview with the
director of". I have also moved the logo of Hereditary so the logo fits with the rest of
the text that I added in. I have also made the word "exclusive" a different colour
compared to the rest of the main sell line so that it will stand out to the audience and
exaggerate that this interview is only available to read in this edition of the magazine.
This is also my front cover completed.
Today I started my production of my double page spread. I started out by
using a ruler to show the middle of the two pages . I then added the two
images that I will be using. I resized both of them so that one of them
took up most of the space since it is the dominant image and the other
just below it as it is the sub-image.
14. I have now added a vertical headline down the left side of the double pages
spread. I have also made this the same colour as the masthead and the word
exclusive on the front cover so that they share a similar colour scheme. I have also
added the a pull quote from the real director and made up a question that
would've been asked by a 'Film Capital' reporter. This is in white so it has the
strongest contrast against the black background.
I have now made two 'plug' type of things that overlap some of the dominant
image and some of the sub-image. One of these includes a 'Did you know'
element just to add more to the page and not just be the exlcusive content.
This is also the double page spread completed.
