Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by swelling or changes that squeeze the median nerve in the carpal tunnel of the wrist, causing tingling and numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers. It is often caused by repetitive motions like typing or conditions like obesity, arthritis, or pregnancy that put pressure on the nerve. Symptoms include numbness, weakness, and pain in the affected fingers. Diagnosis involves physical tests like Tinel's sign or Phalen's test and may include imaging tests or electromyography. Treatment focuses on reducing pressure or inflammation, through splints, injections, or surgery in severe cases. Prevention emphasizes ergonomic workplace adjustments and exercises to avoid repetitive stress injuries.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome

PREFACE
This is one of the assignments that we should do for purposely to get grade for this
subject. The assignments are done as individual assignment about each topic being
concern. My assingment will tell about health concern, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome one
type of repetitive strain injuries or soft tissue injuries. Its relate with workforce or
condition that an employees using their hand overly and bad effect the wrist. For
example that worker affected were employees in production line, drawer, driver,
musician and etc. So along this assignment, I will tell what exactly means of this
syndrome.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We sincerely acknowledge invaluable, input and support of:

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
Carpus is a word derived from the Greek word karpos, which means "wrist." The
wrist is surrounded by a band of fibrous tissue that normally functions as a support for the
joint. The tight space between this fibrous band and the wrist bone is called the carpal tunnel.
The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel to receive sensations from the thumb,
index, and middle fingers of the hand. Any condition that causes swelling or a change in
position of the tissue within the carpal tunnel can squeeze and irritate the median nerve.
Irritation of the median nerve in this manner causes tingling and numbness of the thumb,
index, and the middle fingers -- a condition known as "carpal tunnel syndrome."
What conditions of people with carpal tunnel syndrome?
For most patients, the cause of their carpal tunnel syndrome is unknown. Any
condition that exerts pressure on the median nerve at the wrist can cause carpal tunnel
syndrome. Common conditions that can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome include obesity,
pregnancy, hypothyroidism, arthritis, diabetes, and trauma. Tendon inflammation resulting
from repetitive work, such as uninterrupted typing, can also cause carpal tunnel symptoms.
Carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive maneuvers has been referred to as one of the
repetitive stress injuries. Some rare diseases can cause deposition of abnormal substances in
and around the carpal tunnel, leading to nerve irritation. These diseases include amyloidosis,
sarcoidosis, multiple myeloma, and leukemia.
Example of the problem occur:
problem with fine finger to movement(coordination)and both hands.
wasting away of the muscle under the thumb(in advance or long term case)
weak grip or difficulty carrying bags(a common complain)
weakness in one or both hand
3. 3
What are sign and test ?
During physical examination, the result:
numbness in palm, thumb, index finger, middle finger, and thumb side of ring
finger
weak of hand grip
tapping over the median nerve at wrist may cause pain to shoot from the wrist
or hand (called tinel’s sign)
bending the wrist forward all the way for 60 seconds will usually result
numbness, tingling or weakness (phalen’s test)
test may:
electromyography-to know weather the syndrome exist or not
nerve conduction velocity-to know weather the elctric impulse are running
slowly
wrist x-ray(should be done
to know the actual problem)
As the disease progresses, patients can develop a burning sensation, and cramping and
weakness of the hand. Decreased grip strength can lead to frequent dropping of objects from
the hand. Occasionally, sharp shooting pains can be felt in the forearm. Chronic carpal tunnel
syndrome can also lead to wasting (atrophy) of the hand muscles, particularly those near the
base of the thumb in the palm of the hand.

What are treatment may available ?
You may try wearing a split at night for several weeks. Avoid sleeping on your
wrist.
My safety and health lecturer have said that “prevention is better cure”. So, there are many
changes that you can do in your workplace to reduce stress on your wrist:
special devices include keyboards, different types of mouses, cushioned mouse
pads, and keyboards drawers.
someone should review the position you are in when performing your work
activities. For example, make sure the keyboard is low enough so that your
wrist aren’t bent upward while typing.
5. 5
Make changes in your work duties or recreational activities. Some of the jobs
associated with carpal tunnel syndrome involve typing and vibrating tools. Try
to sit in proper way.
What type of medication use?
Medication uses in the treatment is include nonsteroidal anti-imflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Corticosteroid injection, given into carpal tunnel,
may releive for period of time.
What prevention you may do?
Avoid and reduce the number of repetitive wrist movement whenever possible. Use
tools and equipment that are properly designed to reduce the risk of wrist injury.
Use like ergonomic aids, such as split keyboards, keyboard tray, typing pad, wrist
braces, may be used to improve wrist posture during typing. Take frequent breaks when
typing and always stop if tingling or pain.
exercise warm-up before starting work, just as runners stretch
before a run, can help prevent work-related injuries. Follow this rule:
Extend and stretch both wrists and fingers acutely as if
they are in a hand-stand position. Hold for a count of 5.
Straighten both wrists and relax fingers.
Make a tight fist with both hands.
6. 6
Then bend both wrists down while keeping the fist. Hold for
a count of 5.
Straighten both wrists and relax fingers, for a
count of 5.
The exercise should be repeated 10 times. Then
let your arms hang loosely at the side and shake them for a few
seconds.
What my comment on this carpal tunnel syndrome?
Nowadays, environment of job getting dangerous even we just sit at the office.
Somehow, people not explode with awareness of safety and health at workplace. Policy and
guide should be legislate for each company, from my view its compulsory. “Prevention is
better cure”, once we get this injury, there are no more way to turning back, a lot of money
will be invest. So lets gets start to live your life well.
