Shale Reservoirs: Improved Production from Stimulation of Sweet Spots
SPE APOGCE Perth, Australia, 22–24 October 2012. October 23, 2012
Authors: David Tonner, Samir Abueita, Jos Jonkers, Khaled Hashmy
In the quest to increase reservoir contact, horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing is the
common theme in the stimulation of productive shale reservoirs. Twenty to thirty stage fracs are not
uncommon in some of these reservoirs. Cost, and sometimes safety considerations, can lead operators to
make do with minimal information in the laterals. The selection of frac intervals is often guided by
measurements in the pilot hole and stages are placed more or less evenly along the lateral. Field examples
presented here highlight the fact that comprehensive LWD or openhole wireline data, acquired with the
special deployment techniques in the lateral, clearly demarcate the good zones (sweet spots) from intervals
with inferior reservoir characteristics. LWD Spectral GR has proved its worth in this regard and an
innovative acoustic LWD measurement has provided valuable data in the laterals that has aided stimulation
design.
An original approach involving real time monitoring of hydrocarbon (C1 – C8, benzene, toluene) and
nonhydrocarbon gases (CO2, N2) dissolved in the drilling fluid in the mud stream has proven successful in
independently identifying sweet spots in the laterals. On the other hand, near real time measurements of
XRF, XRD and pyrolysis measurements on drill cuttings at the wellsite have clearly established their worth
in identifying zones suitable for stimulation.
Field examples presented here demonstrate how these techniques have been successfully used to identify
sweet spots and have thus helped enhance the effectiveness of hydraulic fracturing, resulting in improved
production from shale reservoirs. Production data are presented to show how productivity is enhanced by
concentrating on sweet spots.

WELLSITE GEOCHEMISTRY - NEW ANALYTICAL TOOLS USED TO EVALUATE
UNCONVENTIONAL RESERVOIRS TO ASSIST IN WELL CONSTRUCTION AND SMART
COMPLETIONS
SWPLA June 16, 2012
Authors: David Tonner, Simon Hughes, Michael Dix
New field deployable analytical techniques for measuring hydrocarbon pyrolysis, organic carbon content,
inorganic elemental analysis of rock and mineralogy, and mud gas are proving to be very useful when
drilling and completing shale wells. Experience in different shale plays have shown that these techniques
can be used to assist in predicting fluid type, delineating potential pay zones and compartmentalization for
strategic placement of fracturing stages based on rock and chemical properties.
A combination of techniques involves an instrument for mobile programmed pyrolysis (PPy) which uses drill
cuttings to evaluate residual oil content in source rock (S1), remaining hydrocarbon generation potential
(S2), thermal maturity (Tmax) and total organic carbon (TOC). A semi-permeable membrane probe extracts
and analyzes real-time hydrocarbon (C1 – C8, benzene, and toluene) and non-hydrocarbon gases (CO2, N2)
dissolved in the drilling fluid. Drill cuttings are also collected and evaluated onsite using X-ray fluorescence
(XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which provides an elemental breakdown of the composition of the rock
and the mineralogy. The elements can be used to create a chemical Gamma ray log, estimate TOC and
identify mineralogy and brittleness. Cutting samples are taken at variable frequency in order to increase/
decrease data resolution.
THE BENEFITS AND APPLICATION OF SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE SURFACE GAS
DETECTION DURING MANAGED PRESSURE DRILLING
OTC Brazil June 14, 2011
Authors: David Tonner, Giovanni Pinna, William Davies, James Chopty, Karim ElMaslout
Advances in drilling technology in response to a need for greater evaluation and exploitation of previously
marginal resources are leading to increased usage of Controlled and Managed Pressure Drilling systems.
Their application on High Pressure High Temperature wells is also increasing in relation to accurate flow and
kick detection provision as well as pressure management. The benefits they bring in terms of hazard
mitigation, reduced formation damage and improved drilling dynamics are allowing fields with tight
operating windows to be drilled with greater safety margins and better economics. A consequence of using
closed and pressured systems has been the impact and use of surface evaluation techniques, particularly
surface gas logging.
Despite provision of real-time information relating to reservoir pressure, fracture gradient and fluid invasion
as well as high resolution flow and fluid density variation, until recently there has still been a lack of
meaningful surface gas information. This was due to the fact that all surface gas detection systems except for
GC tracer currently rely on atmospheric conditions to extract gas from mud in air.
By utilizing a semi-permeable membrane gas extraction process directly behind the choke manifold, prior
to the Mud Gas Separator, the sampling point forms part of the enclosed system. This provides significant
benefits in removing any potential surface gas loss. The application and deployment of such a technique is

described in this paper. The responsive nature of membrane extraction, along with the repeatability and
quantitative nature of the process, lends itself well to comparison with high resolution pressure and flow
data generated by the Managed Pressure Drilling system and has the potential to be used to increase
drilling efficiencies. The relationship between fluid composition and gas in mud volumes at surface, with
derived reservoir pressure and surface parameters is examined in this paper.

Languages English (Native or bilingual proficiency) Spanish (Native or bilingual proficiency) Publications Shale Reservoirs: Improved Production from Stimulation of Sweet Spots SPE APOGCE Perth, Australia, 22–24 October 2012. October 23, 2012 Authors: David Tonner, Samir Abueita, Jos Jonkers, Khaled Hashmy In the quest to increase reservoir contact, horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing is the common theme in the stimulation of productive shale reservoirs. Twenty to thirty stage fracs are not uncommon in some of these reservoirs. Cost, and sometimes safety considerations, can lead operators to make do with minimal information in the laterals. The selection of frac intervals is often guided by measurements in the pilot hole and stages are placed more or less evenly along the lateral. Field examples presented here highlight the fact that comprehensive LWD or openhole wireline data, acquired with the special deployment techniques in the lateral, clearly demarcate the good zones (sweet spots) from intervals with inferior reservoir characteristics. LWD Spectral GR has proved its worth in this regard and an innovative acoustic LWD measurement has provided valuable data in the laterals that has aided stimulation design. An original approach involving real time monitoring of hydrocarbon (C1 – C8, benzene, toluene) and nonhydrocarbon gases (CO2, N2) dissolved in the drilling fluid in the mud stream has proven successful in independently identifying sweet spots in the laterals. On the other hand, near real time measurements of XRF, XRD and pyrolysis measurements on drill cuttings at the wellsite have clearly established their worth in identifying zones suitable for stimulation. Field examples presented here demonstrate how these techniques have been successfully used to identify sweet spots and have thus helped enhance the effectiveness of hydraulic fracturing, resulting in improved production from shale reservoirs. Production data are presented to show how productivity is enhanced by concentrating on sweet spots.
  • 7. David Tonner Resume June , 2016 Page7 WELLSITE GEOCHEMISTRY - NEW ANALYTICAL TOOLS USED TO EVALUATE UNCONVENTIONAL RESERVOIRS TO ASSIST IN WELL CONSTRUCTION AND SMART COMPLETIONS SWPLA June 16, 2012 Authors: David Tonner, Simon Hughes, Michael Dix New field deployable analytical techniques for measuring hydrocarbon pyrolysis, organic carbon content, inorganic elemental analysis of rock and mineralogy, and mud gas are proving to be very useful when drilling and completing shale wells. Experience in different shale plays have shown that these techniques can be used to assist in predicting fluid type, delineating potential pay zones and compartmentalization for strategic placement of fracturing stages based on rock and chemical properties. A combination of techniques involves an instrument for mobile programmed pyrolysis (PPy) which uses drill cuttings to evaluate residual oil content in source rock (S1), remaining hydrocarbon generation potential (S2), thermal maturity (Tmax) and total organic carbon (TOC). A semi-permeable membrane probe extracts and analyzes real-time hydrocarbon (C1 – C8, benzene, and toluene) and non-hydrocarbon gases (CO2, N2) dissolved in the drilling fluid. Drill cuttings are also collected and evaluated onsite using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which provides an elemental breakdown of the composition of the rock and the mineralogy. The elements can be used to create a chemical Gamma ray log, estimate TOC and identify mineralogy and brittleness. Cutting samples are taken at variable frequency in order to increase/ decrease data resolution. THE BENEFITS AND APPLICATION OF SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE SURFACE GAS DETECTION DURING MANAGED PRESSURE DRILLING OTC Brazil June 14, 2011 Authors: David Tonner, Giovanni Pinna, William Davies, James Chopty, Karim ElMaslout Advances in drilling technology in response to a need for greater evaluation and exploitation of previously marginal resources are leading to increased usage of Controlled and Managed Pressure Drilling systems. Their application on High Pressure High Temperature wells is also increasing in relation to accurate flow and kick detection provision as well as pressure management. The benefits they bring in terms of hazard mitigation, reduced formation damage and improved drilling dynamics are allowing fields with tight operating windows to be drilled with greater safety margins and better economics. A consequence of using closed and pressured systems has been the impact and use of surface evaluation techniques, particularly surface gas logging. Despite provision of real-time information relating to reservoir pressure, fracture gradient and fluid invasion as well as high resolution flow and fluid density variation, until recently there has still been a lack of meaningful surface gas information. This was due to the fact that all surface gas detection systems except for GC tracer currently rely on atmospheric conditions to extract gas from mud in air. By utilizing a semi-permeable membrane gas extraction process directly behind the choke manifold, prior to the Mud Gas Separator, the sampling point forms part of the enclosed system. This provides significant benefits in removing any potential surface gas loss. The application and deployment of such a technique is

The responsive nature of membrane extraction, along with the repeatability and quantitative nature of the process, lends itself well to comparison with high resolution pressure and flow data generated by the Managed Pressure Drilling system and has the potential to be used to increase drilling efficiencies. The relationship between fluid composition and gas in mud volumes at surface, with derived reservoir pressure and surface parameters is examined in this paper.
