2. Production Experiment No. 1 – Thursday 15th
October
• In order to ensure that my finished podcast is of a decent quality, I
have started recording an original piece of music on GarageBand as a
means of demonstrating my capabilities to do so. Beginning with the
Event Horizon soundscape, I intend to create a sci-fi style piece of
music, with several elements such as a bend in pitch (either up or
down) being utilised to that effect.
3. Production Experiment 1 (cont’d)
• To add further atmosphere to the music I have conducted for my
experiment, I have also included the Stratosphere soundscape
thereby giving it, combined with the ethereal sounds of the Event
Horizon, an otherworldly feel.
• Finally, I have applied a Clarinet solo to the music to give it the John
Williams-esque feel I have been looking for. Despite feeling
particularly happy with my experimental work, I feel I could have
created a more adventurous and upbeat tone and thereby give the
audience the sense of adventure they would expect from listening to
a piece of music by John Williams. This could potentially be
something I could work towards as my podcast nears completion.
4. Production Experiment No. 2 – Friday 16th
October
• Today, I am continuing work on GarageBand for what will hopefully
become the music for the opening and/or closing of my finished
product. In order to give the music the John Williams-esque
atmosphere that I felt was sorely lacking from the soundscape, I have
been continuing my experiments with the clarinet and, while the
finished piece is not yet fully refined, I have already a note of the
music key I will be using (C major) while sparing no effort to ensure
my piece is more or less in line with what I envision.
5. • After numerous failed attempts to create a decent quality score, combined
with a few experimental tests before each recording, I feel that I have now
successfully accomplished this through the utilisation of key notes and shifts
in octave (which I have already made a note of in my journal and will
provide a scan as proof during work from home) in order to drive the score
forward. A notable omission from my use of the clarinet was a shift in pitch.
This was done deliberately as I felt the instrument was not accustomed to
such a shift and manipulation in tone, as opposed to the respective
soundscapes I had chosen of Event Horizon and Stratosphere.
• Despite these setbacks, I feel I have ultimately accomplished what I had set
out to do from the beginning as, with the inclusion of the clarinet, the music
I have written is starting to catch up with my original vision for this podcast
and sound somewhat more like the musical style John Williams regularly
employs, while simultaneously providing a feel similar to that of 2001: A
Space Odyssey when put together with the two soundscapes that I have
chosen.
