2. MIT FAB LAB Model
A Fab Lab is comprised of off-the-shelf, industrial-grade
fabrication and electronics tools, wrapped in open source software
and programs written by researchers at MIT’s Center for Bits &
Atoms . Originally designed for communities as prototyping
platforms for local entrepreneurship, Fab Labs are increasingly
being adopted by schools as platforms for project-based, hands-on
STEM education.
Needs :
• Increased Outlets
• Heavier Breakers
• Ventilation
• Workspace
•Computers and
Software
Currently Fab Labs include a
•laser cutter
•sign cutter
•a high-resolution NC milling machine, a
large wood router a suite of electronic
components
•programming tools for low-cost, high-
speed microcontrollers
3. FAYATTEVILE FAB LAB
What is the FFL Fab Lab?
Fayetteville Free Library’s Fabulous Laboratory, where resources are
available for making things.
Equipment:
• Hardware and software for making things! This includes:
• 5 Makerbot Replicator 2 3D printers
• 2 Stratasys Mojo 3D printers (now available by reservation)
• Shapeoko CNC Mill (coming Spring 2015)
• Makerbot Digitizer -3D scanner
• Hobby Cutter Laser cutter & vinyl cutter
• 7 sewing machines
• Hand tools & paper craft tools
• Jewelry making tools
• Knitting & crochet kits
• Professional 3D design software
4. FAYETTEVILE FAB LAB
Fayetteville also has
• Hobby Cutter Laser cutter & vinyl cutter
• 7 sewing machines
• Hand tools & paper craft tools
• Jewelry making tools
• Knitting & crochet kits
Needs :
• Increased Outlets
• Heavier Breakers
• Ventilation
•Computers and
Software
5. Chesterfield Maker Space
More of the MIT Model
• technology heavy
• A lot of industrial quality electronics
• “staff” who have engineering experience
• No real Art or Craft programming
If one considers the staff lacks much of
the detail knowledge of Doc, the
“volunteer” who runs the space.
6. Richmond Area Media Lab
Richmond Has 4 sources for this:
• CenterStage – works with RPL for Video
Production – schools Students only
• The Mixx – also focused on video production and
High School Students
• Henrico – Open to all, but few resources and
under utilized, no programs or consistent
patronage
• VCU – gaming stations, video and audio
production, planning on offering

8. FFL operates as a ‘third place’ in the community and
these programs foster a participatory culture that is
essential in healthy, vibrant, innovative communities.
FFL is also a prototype for the library as incubator
model. ( or could be considered a Group Work Space
like 804RVA.)
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
9. Characteristics of a Third Space
• Reasonably priced food and drink
• Open, welcoming and accessible to the
neighborhood.
• An ambiance that can promote both conversation
and quiet relaxation.
and Co-working Space
• Encourages dialogue
• Variation of skill sets
• Knowledge available both formal and informal

21. Two Last Coniderstaions
• I have been approached by two separate
organizations about involvement in
• Film Collective Loaning Library
• Open Device lab
22. This non-profit institution
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania began as a
filmmaking-equipment access cooperative
in 1971. That co-op is still a pillar of the
organization, the group found a space
including darkrooms and filmmaking
facilities. Workshops in the use of
equipment, as well as screenings, were
offered.
23. Open Device Labs
Open Device Labs (ODLs, #ODL) are a grass
roots community movement. They
establish shared community pools of internet
connected devices for testing purposes of web
and app developers. In result, ODLs lead to
an ultimate improvement of the web & app
experience both for developers and for
consumers

Currently Fab Labs include a laser cutter that makes 2D and 3D structures, a sign cutter that plots in copper to make antennas and flex circuits, a high-resolution NC milling machine that makes circuit boards and precision parts, a large wood router for building furniture and housing, and a suite of electronic components and programming tools for low-cost, high-speed microcontrollers for on-site rapid circuit prototyping.
