21. Network Considerations for VDI Environments
Multiple “flows” are traversed as virtual desktops access the infrastructure
These “flows” must be addressed by networking team
each time a virtual desktop pool is created
• Separate pools, segmented by subnet
• Unique VLAN’s by department (ex: accounting/HR/etc.)
This process is time-consuming…
• Mistake-prone, non-automated for many organizations
• Compounded if network is outsourced
Traditional data center networking is inflexible…
• Network toplogies change, VM’s move
• How can the network/security team keep pace?

Editor's Notes
We're bringing all of these pieces together into the Workspace suite.
A year ago we announced the vCloud Suite.
The Workspace suite is the same thing, bringing together the complete Horizon desktop, AirWatch mobile platform, and content management with a common set of services underneath it, such as identity, social, catalogue, gateway services, into a complete and integrated solution.
And what is important to our customers is user experience—great user experience, simplified management because this means less cost and more time to spend on strategic projects and less time doing breakfix, security and having the flexibility to be able to deliver services on demand in the way that best meets the needs of all of their end users. So let’s look at each of these in turn. First user experience…
With Horizon 6--applications can be delivered and accessed through the
unified workspace across devices including Macs, Linux, Android, Windows, Thin Clients and Zero Clients include
RDS-hosted apps and desktops for Windows Server 2008 and
later
SaaS applications and web applications
ThinApp packaged applications ( 5.0 and later)
And
Citrix virtualized XenApp applictions ( 5.0 and later)
.
We have been rapidly innovating and adding new capabilities to support users who just want to access hosted apps—some of these new capabilities include support for NVIDIA GRID vGPU, file type association, support for Skype for Business and Windows Media redirection. All of these features were just added in September and complement the broad range of features we have added every quarter in support of apps for end users.
We are focusing on ensuring that end users have the best possible experience—whether they are manipulating rich 3D apps, printing, singing in, leveraging USB drives or accessing multiple monitors.
Here is a demo of just how good the performance is for end users with Horizon desktops and apps with NVVIDIA GRID vGPU.
Project Fargo now Instant Clone clones a running virtual machine to create an identical one in just a second or so. It's very fast.
So, this is important for a couple of reasons.
The first is that you get a new powered-on virtual machine in about a second.
And the second is that virtual machine -- the new one at least -- is extraordinarily lightweight, because it shares all the memory and data with the original.
So, we had this process today that takes many minutes, and when you put it all together leveraging Project Fargo, what we can now do is get that to just a couple of seconds to get you a new virtual desktop ready to go.
That's a 30X speed improvement.
We've taken something that used to be quite expensive and have now made it basically free.
Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_DW0lCy2NY (developer desktop with App Volumes)
App Volumes can deliver applications to desktop environments in seconds. A traditional VM contains an OS, applications, and data/files. All these components rely on one another and are tightly coupled. App Volumes helps provide a just-in-time application model where it attaches a VMDK file that contains applications to the VM. The App Volumes agent on the VM helps manage the application containers that are just delivered to the user, who can even be logged into the the desktop.
But what we realized was that we're really defining a new category for desktop here.
And so, it's something that we're calling just-in-time desktops.
It's desktop reimagined and inspired by mobility.
One-touch identity management, support for most secure environments,
unified access gateway
Many organizations implement desktop and application virtualization to improve client computing security and deliver greater enterprise mobility. Centralizing desktops and applications protects data at rest, prevents unauthorized application access, and provides a more efficient way to patch, maintain and upgrade images. However, with desktop and application virtualization, new security concerns can arise behind the data center firewall—where hundreds or even thousands of desktops reside. These desktops sit in close proximity to other users and mission-critical workloads, making them much more susceptible to malware and other attacks. These attacks can move from desktop to server, exposing a large attack surface within the data center. This “east-west” threat scenario is a common one affecting many customers today, particularly those with stringent security and compliance mandates.
Organizations seeking to administer networking and security policy that persistently follows users and workloads have also traditionally incurred a significant investment in a hardware-centric architecture that is CapEx-intensive, complex to operate, and slow to adapt to the typical dynamic business environment.

VMware NSX™ for Horizon® brings speed and simplicity to VDI networking. Within seconds, IT administrators can create policies that dynamically follow virtual desktops, without the need for time-consuming network provisioning. Extending security policy from the data center to the desktop and app, this joint solution also provides an extensible platform that integrates with industry-leading security solutions.
VMware Horizon FLEX provides the flexibility IT needs to serve BYO users, Mac users, contractors and road warriors – while ensuring security, control and compliance of the corporate desktop. - See more at: http://www.vmware.com/products/horizon-flex?src=PaidSearch_eBiz_Fusion_Google_Search_US&kw=horizon+flex&mt=e#sthash.wvyevCwN.dpuf
EVO:RAIL and EVO:SDDC hyperconverged appliances (see example slide)--for Horizon. The idea being EVO RAIL is for smaller scale deployments and SDDC is for 2000+ seat implementations. You want to show this concept of Horizon supporting folks with pre-built converged infrastructure from small scale to large scale implementations.
Project Enzo combines the benefits of cloud-based management, intelligent orchestration and hyper-converged infrastructure to radically transform virtual desktop and application delivery—making it easier and more cost-effective than ever before to adopt, deploy, scale and move desktops and apps in the cloud, on premises or back and forth between the two. - See more at: http://www.vmwhorizonair.com/enzo#sthash.KVZ8aF3d.dpuf
Given that we are talking about cost-I wanted to now turn to focus on Horizon Air. Back in March we announced Desktops as a Service on vCloud Air. At VMWorld last year in the US we announced apps as a service. And now we have just announced Desktop DR as a service. This provides a fantaistic opportunity to service all those customers out there that are looking for a low-cost, low-maintenance way of supporting DR across their organizations.
