1. Product Research - Analysis of 3 Advertisements
-Mr T Snickers Radio Advert
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1CRJAySsqA&feature=related
This is an advert for the “Snickers” chocolate bar featuring a very famous character, Mr T from a
1980’s TV show and modern remakes of “The A Team”. The narrative of the advertisement is that a
man is on the phone with problems regarding putting together a kitchen unit. The listener is tricked
into thinking everything is normal until Mr T stops putting on a fake, sappy voice and engages with a
flurry of patronising words performed in the stereotypical overly manly voice which his fits in
perfectly with Mr T’s public persona. At the very end of the advert a narrator gives a brief outro to
the advert, in a stereotypical, manly voice fitting in with the theme of the Snickers theme of
manliness. The product contains nuts therefore the play on words “Get some nuts” relating to men
and confidence is used to bring across a particular ethos to the chocolate bar.
2. -KFC Radio advertisement
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRODqCQqBjw
The radio advertisement is based on a parody of an old Dracula-style horror film. The main narrator
is a rather comical-sounding evil vampire from Transylvania along to a very stereotypical soundtrack
of storms and dark ominous music. There are other characters involved that pop up with comical
statements about chicken, said in a funny overly-stereotypical horror film victim. The entire advert
has a rather Scooby-doo meets Dracula feel to it.
There is a very loose narrative to it, about an innocent group of people searching for food, yet the
script is more based on describing the new chicken, how it looks, tastes and the “low prices”.
I think that the comedic value mixed with the attractiveness of price + taste is more than suitable for
KFC’s usual young audience ranging from teens to young adults. As they are old enough to get the
references yet still young enough to enjoy the humour.
3. -Corn Nuts Radio Advertisement
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=3BzxfEEd1DQ&feature=endscreen
The Corn Nuts advert consists of one large Corn Nuts themed song surrounded by two short pieces
of narration. The song itself surrounds the idea that you can eat a great tasting snack and eat it
anywhere. The song has a very upbeat, cheesy jingle-type melody and beat to it; this suits the
stereotype of a fast paced cheesy Radio Advertisement. The song involves how the customer can
eat the nuts in school, this clearly addresses the advertisements main target audience of young
students.
This is a very controversial advert that went viral due the enormous amount of sexual innuendos
involved, especially regarding the phrase “bust a nut”. This works very well in the adverts favour as
many people will enjoy shock-humour; the way in which the video went viral helped gain the
advertisement many more views than most generic radio adverts.
