Mattingly "AI & Prompt Design: The Basics of Prompt Design"
How to write like a scientist - Part of the EAT project.
1. Draft 1
The white fish is a good source of lean protein being
very low in saturated fats. It’s a great source of
Vitamin B6 , Vitamin D and Magnesium. Vitamin B6
is very useful in helping our enzymes work well, and
it is thought to reduce the risk of Cardio Vascular
disease. Like B6, magnesium also helps our
enzymes work and has a major role in muscle and
nerve function and the regulation of blood
pressure. Vitamin D may have benefits in reducing
the risk of cancer, although high doses of can lead
to problems with the liver and the kidneys.
2. White fish is a great source of Vitamin B6,
Vitamin D and the mineral Magnesium. Vitamin
B6 is critical for enzyme function, and is thought
to reduce the risk of Cardio Vascular disease.
Like Vitamin B6, Magnesium aids enzyme
function. Furthermore it has a major role in
muscle and nerve function, and in the regulation
of blood pressure. Scientists are considering the
role Vitamin D has in reducing cancer risk.
However, high doses can lead to liver and kidney
problems.
Draft 4
3. Read the two drafts.
• Why is the second better than the first?
• Why was the first sentence removed?
4. The first sentence foregrounds the rest
of the paragraph. It tells you what it is
going to tell you about. ( Topic)
. Vitamin
B6 is critical for enzyme function, and is thought
to reduce the risk of Cardio Vascular disease.
Like Vitamin B6, Magnesium aids enzyme

6. The next sentences describe what the
nutrients do, says how important it is
and/ or how likely it is.

7. Nominalisation is
• Verbs can be turned into nouns, which
changes the word from an action to a thing
• A noun that is formed from a verb is called a
nominalisation.
• Nominalisations are nouns that contain a
hidden action.

12. What do you recognise about this
sentence structure?
White fish is a great source of Vitamin B6,
Vitamin D and the mineral Magnesium. Vitamin
B6 is critical for enzyme function, and is thought
to reduce the risk of Cardio Vascular disease.
Like Vitamin B6, Magnesium aids enzyme
function.
. Scientists are considering the

Like Vitamin B6, Magnesium aids enzyme
function. Furthermore it has a major role in

Draft 4
14. Why is the sentence better than the
simplified one?
more simply put “Vitamin D may stop you from getting
cancer”
15. So how is this sentence written that
tells you this?
We don’t know yet? It is still being
researched?
Tells us that other factors are involved too
16. So how is this sentence written that
tells you this?
Tells us that other factors are involved too
Action verb. The main action. Therefore not nominalised to
reduction.
It is also more honest than “stops.” as more factors are
involved.
17. muscle and nerve function, and in the regulation
of blood pressure. Scientists are considering the
role Vitamin D has in reducing cancer risk.
Why is this connective useful?
What does the word “can” tell us about
this relationship?
How would the meaning of the sentence
“high doses lead to liver and kidney
problems.” be different?
Draft 4
18. Information
Peaches have a lot of dietary fibre in
them.
People who eat lots of fibre have a lower
chance of heart disease, diabetes and
some cancers.
Should eat 18g of fibre every day, but
people on average eat 14g every day.
One peach would give you 7% of your
daily need.
Apples have more fibre (17% per apple)
Foregrounding
S-V-O?
What the nutrient does for health or the body?
New subject?
Main idea?
Connective.

data?
Editor's Notes
Ask “what is it about” and how do you know? Make it obvious that the food needs to be near the start of the paragraph.Ask if they can spot a sentence structure the next slide will help. But its basically a Subject- verb- Object structure.Ask why the word great is important? What must the “data” be like about these micronutrients?
What has the subject changed to? Where has it come from? ( the previous sentence)Ask what two Vitamin B6 does? Ask which one is most likely to be completely trueHighlight Vital and thought to
Make it clear that the scientific “verb” here is the “work of the enzyme”The first sentence has two verbs where only one is needed so “vitamin B6 helps our enzymes work well would be better.”the helps verb does not need to be nominalised as it says what the main action is of the subject (vitamin b6)
Point out the use of causal verbs, it will be useful to highlight that the first half of the sentence does not have thisMake clear that the word reduce does not need to be nominalised as it is the main action. And that risk is already a verb and a noun.
Is a comma needed after furthermore?Hopefully the students can spot the nominalisation of function and regulation Ask them what connectives have been used? And what does it tell them/ ask them for alternatives
Could this be one sentence?Does however need a comma after it?ASK What does this tell you? Paraphrased on next slide for comparison
Co construct with class. Ask questions think out loud, redraft as you go. Eg peaches contain a lot of dietary fibrePeaches are a great source of fibrePeachers are a good source of dietary fibre. This sentence needs to be about peaches and the fibre (SVO)Next sectionWhat is the new subject? ( it the object from the previous sentence)What does fibre do?Fibre lowers the chance of you getting heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Fibre lowers the chance of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Review this structure it matches previous exampleThe next sentence we should eat 18g of fibre, but we only eat 14g, can be written in this style.People eat less fibre than they should, Fibre intake is usually lower than the recommended 18g per day.
