12. Martinus Nijhoff
I went alone to Bommel just to see
the bridge. I saw the bridge they'd built. Two sides
that seemed to snub each other in the past
look neighbourly again. I drank my tea
and lay about ten minutes in the grass,
my head filled with the vistas long and wide –
when from the middle of that boundlessness
I heard a voice that riveted my mind.
It was a woman. Slowly down the river
her boat approached the bridge, then glided through.
She stood alone on deck, beside the rudder,
and what she sang, it was a psalm, I knew.
Oh, I thought, Oh, if that might be my mother.
Praise God, she sang, His hand will shelter you.
