“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to
change the world”
-Nelson Mandela
4. Aim to…
• To consider the issues associated with waste paper thrown away inside the
school premises.
• To draw-up an action plan for reducing waste paper.
• To evaluate changes in attitude and behavior of children by measuring the
quantities of waste paper before and after the implementation of the action
plan.
• This activity aims to reduce paper usage/wastage. The measurement of
waste paper should therefore include any paper collected in class for
recycling (Tie up with ITC). Discussions on what happens to waste paper
should include the recycling option and children should understand the
preference of this option over landfill or incineration.
• To motivate, “Save Trees & Save the Environment”.

6. IMPLEMENTATION STEPS
Survey Report before awareness
*Three fourth of the bins are filled with waste papers.
*It has to be minimized.
*Inculcate the awareness by our team members.
More waste, More loss…
So reduce it…

10. Why are Trees important?
*Trees are like the lungs of the planet. They breathe
in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen.
Additionally, they provide habitat for birds and
other wildlife
*CO2 is one of the major contributing elements to the
greenhouse effect. Trees trap CO2 from the
atmosphere and make carbohydrates that are used
for plant growth. They give us oxygen in return.
*Mature trees can absorb roughly 48
pounds of CO2 a year. The tree in
turn releases enough oxygen to
sustain two human beings.
Jaisree of Grade V gave useful tips.
11. *In the winter, trees can act as windbreaks for your home and will help
you save on heating costs. The Journal of Horticulture claims that
saving on heating costs can reach as much as 25 percent!
*Trees shade buildings, streets, and homes. If enough
trees are planted in cities, the overall microclimate
improves and total energy use for heating and cooling
is reduced.
*Trees also absorb sound and reduce noise pollution.
This is especially important for people who live near
freeways. In some cases, a well planted group of
trees can reduce noise pollution by up to 10 decibels
*Trees are the biggest mother who helps us to be alive.
Parents are directed to walk in a
good path…

13. Do you know????
To produce each week's Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees
must be cut down.
Recycling a single run of the Sunday newspapers would save 75,000 trees.
If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees
each year!
If every one recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save
about 25,000,000 trees a year.
If you had a 15-year-old tree and made it into paper grocery bags, you'd get
about 700 of them.
A busy supermarket could use all of them in
under an hour! This means in one year, one
supermarket can go through over 6 million paper
bags!
14. This amounts to about 2,000,000,000 trees per year! The amount of
………….oh……..
wood and paper we throw away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000
homes for 20 years.
Approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away every
year .
The average household throws away 13,000 separate pieces of paper
each year.
Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three
cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000
gallons of water.
This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings! The
construction costs of a paper mill designed to use waste paper is 50 to
80% less than the cost of a mill using new pulp.
Save paper, Save tree.
15. Up cycling challenge…
Paper basket made up of
waste papers.
Up cycling is the very environmental friendly
practice of taking a junky or unused object
& turning it into something useful and of
greater value.
16. Share with us…
One ton of recycled paper saves:
approximately 13 trees
2.5 barrels of oil
4100 Kilowatt hours of Electricity
4 cubic meters of landfill, 141 cubic feet
31,780 liters of water, or 8,395 gallons

19. REMEMBER…………
• Wasting paper means cutting more trees. Cutting more
trees means losing forest and losing forests means
…………
Let us sing
Bits of paper, bits of paper
Lying on the floor, lying on the floor
Makes the place untidy, makes the place untidy
Pick them up, pick them up
Save them for making new paper.
23. Joining hands with ITC…..
Waste products collected from the children are weighed and sent
for recycling process.
24. Bloom where you are planted……
*The amount received from the ITC is utilized for a under
privileged girl child for her education.
*A small amount has to be used for health & Hygiene
facility. (A water purifier for the school)
25. Skill to do comes of doing………
One of our child (B.Shalini of Grade III) made a wall hanger using
waste CD’s and presented in a competition organized by The Times of
India & Easa College of Engineering on the eve of Vinayagar
chathurthi.
She won the 2nd place for Innovative method using waste
products.
B.Shalini of Grade III (Times of India dated on 1st Sep 2011)
Congratulations………….
