The First Year Student Enrichment Program (FYSEP) empowers first generation students in their first year at Dartmouth College to thrive academically and in the greater college community. Through a seven day orientation program and year long peer mentoring, FYSEP students participate in college level classes, workshops, activities, and seminars designed to simulate college life and prepare participants to handle some of the challenges they may face during the course of their first year. This workshop will explore successes and challenges of the program’s first two years, focusing on the powerful collaborative partnerships that have been formed among Dartmouth faculty, student support staff, college administration and undergraduates themselves.

The Rural Secondary Program of SD#27 has been operating, growing and changing since 2009. This presentation will outline our solution to the challenge of keeping dispersed, varied and shrinking rural schools open and viable. Our program currently includes 6 public schools/programs and 2 Band schools we contract for, with approximately 60 students in grades 8-10. We use free and open source software and good, solid pedagogy to connect and engage participants. Declining enrollment continues to challenge us and the program will need to evolve in the future. We will look at potential changes to the program to continue to be viable.

A faculty learning community (FLC) comprised of six professors representing different disciplines was formed in 2011 to study, develop, and teach blended learning courses. As part of this project, we sought to evaluate the efficacy of blended learning on faculty (efficiency, satisfaction) using interview questions designed by Garrison and Vaughan (2011) and students (access, learning effectiveness, satisfaction) through survey responses including the Community of Inquiry (CoI) survey (Swan, et al., 2008). This study found evidence that student perceptions of the CoI may be useful in predicting differences in students' blended learning experiences. The study also found that perceived differences in blended learning experiences varied by discipline. This difference may be a result of differences between students, such as their age, or differences between instructors. A second research outcome was that FLCs are a useful form of professional development when correctly implemented. For example, faculty benefit from participation in an FLC when they receive helpful advice on promising practices and encouragement when experiencing instructional or technical challenges. On the other hand, FLCs are less effective when there is a lack of dialogue between meetings or when a facilitator does not provide adequate preparation for face-to-face meetings. During our presentation we will share both faculty and student findings from our study. We will engage our audience by asking them to share promising practices for blended learning classrooms and professional development for blended learning instructors.

Creating a new teaching programme within a functional model - Carey
Creating a new teaching programme within a functional model - Carey
IL Group (CILIP Information Literacy Group)
The Covid-19 pandemic has underlined the importance of online teaching within higher education and provided further encouragement to institutions to develop their fully online course provision - a trend which has been gathering pace over recent years. It has challenged universities and colleges to think about how they support their faculty in developing the competencies and strategies to teach effectively online. Looking to the future, how do we support the continuous professional learning and development (CPLD) of online instructors, addressing the needs of both new and more experienced online practitioners, with equal attention to their pedagogical knowledge and technical skills development? What works and why within an online teaching context? In this presentation we will present a CPLD model that provides an overview of the different sources of learning development that are available to online instructors - both within and outside the teaching institution – and how they are interrelated and interconnected as part of a wider ecology of CPLD support to staff. We explain how these different sources of support may be combined to support personalised learning development pathways in online teaching practice, drawing on illustrations of evidence-based CPLD practices from staff developers and academics from across the world (Forbes & Walker, 2022).
