un paso desde Vitoria-Gasteiz,
paso y medio desde Bilbao,
en pleno corazón de Euskadi,
encuentras un lugar donde el
verde y la pureza lo dominan todo. Es el
Destino Turístico Gorbeia. Naturaleza pura
en una zona plagada de atractivos pai-
sajísticos, patrimoniales y etnográficos, y
de intenso sabor rural.
Parque Natural de
Gorbeia
Es el espacio protegido más grande de
Euskadi, con 20.000 hectáreas repartidas
entre Álava y Bizkaia. El pueblo de Sarria
propone el acceso más natural desde
Álava. En esta localidad encuentras
Parketxeak, los Centros de Interpretación
del parque, la entrada ideal a este puzle
de bosques de hayas, robles y marojos.
También en los ríos y arroyos, símbolo
de una excelente salud ambiental: allí se
esconden ejemplares de nutria y de des-
mán del Pirineo, que comparten aguas
claras con anfibios como la rana patilarga
o el tritón alpino. Por doquier, extensos
pastos repletos de ovejas latxas, cabras
azpigorri, vacas terreñas y pottokas, espe-
cies que dan sabor rural a Gorbeia. Otras
visitas imprescindibles son las cuevas de
Mairuelegorreta, las cuevas de Baltzola y
la cascada de Gujuli.
Biotopo protegido de
Itzina
El macizo de Itzina es un impresionante e
inhóspito paisaje calizo en el que destaca
una gran cantidad de cuevas, simas y
ríos subterráneos debido a la erosión por
el fuerte viento y las lluvias. Su principal
caverna, llamada Superlegor, ha dado
origen a leyendas, como las que pintan el
lugar como morada temporal de Mari, la
Dama del Anboto.

Gorbeia Natural Park (with

Park… The Gorbeia region is
a nature heaven. Straddling
the provinces of Alava and
Bizkaia, the region is found
between Zuia in Alava, to the
south, and Arratia-Nerbioi in
Bizkaia, to the north.
T
his beautiful green area set in
the heart of the Basque Country
is within easy reach of Vitoria-
Gasteiz, and just a bit further
from Bilbao. Gorbeia offers visitors fresh
air, breath-taking scenery, historical and
cultural heritage and a completely rural
experience.
Gorbeia Natural Park
Covering an area of 20,000 hectares
shared by Alava and Bizkaia, the park is
the largest protected area in the Basque
Country. The town of Sarria is the best
access point when approaching from
Alava. There is a Parketxea, or Interpreta-
tion Centre in the town, an ideal place to
learn about the beech, oak and Pyrenean
oak forests in the park. The otters and
Pyrenean muskats which share the clear
waters of the park’s rivers and streams
with amphibians such as Iberian frogs
and alpine newts reflect the excellent
environmental conditions of the area.
Local breeds of animals can be seen
everywhere, latxa sheep, azpigorri goats,
terreña cows and pottoka ponies, further
enhancing the authentic rural flavour of
the area. Other park features not to be
missed include the spectacular geologi-
cal rock formations and galleries of the
Mairuelegorreta and Baltzola caves, and
the breathtaking 100m drop of the Gujuli
waterfall.

Biotope
The Itzina ridge is an imposing, barren
limestone massif full of caves, chasms
and underground streams caused by
heavy erosion. Supelegor, the main cave,
is the legendary refuge of Mari, the Lady
of Anboto.

Legutio (awarded the special status of
Villa in 1333), Urrunaga reservoir offers

Embalses de Urrunaga
y de Ullibarri-Gamboa
A la vera de Legutio (pueblo de marcado
carácter medieval, con la categoría de
villa desde 1333), el embalse de Urru-
naga ofrece una gran masa de agua con
recursos para disfrutar de la naturaleza
activamente: está permitido practicar pira-
güismo, windsurf y vela ligera. Además,
dos parques muy bien acondicionados
(Sorgimendi y Zabalain) cuentan con
mesas, asadores e incluso una pequeña
zona de playa. Muy cerca, el embalse
de Ullíbarri-Gamboa se convierte en una
referencia como humedal y como lugar
de ocio.

Si quieres aún más acción puedes
acercarte al parque de aventura sobre
árboles Hontza Extrem, cerca de Oleta,
con puentes tibetanos, tirolinas, lianas…
Un plan más tranquilo es visitar el Museo
de Alfarería Vasca (en Ollerias) o visitar
el patrimonio religioso-arquitectónico de
Gorbeia. Dos ejemplos son la iglesia de
Andra Mari, en Galdakao y el santuario de
Nuestra Señora de Oro, en Zuia.
En Gorbeia un centenar de productores y artesanos se dedican en cuerpo y
alma a elaborar manjares deliciosos como miel, cerveza artesana, queso Idia-
zabal, pastel vasco, sidra y zumo de manzana, confituras… Y firman trabajos
en cuero, madera, con plantas y tejidos naturales.

Around 100 artisan producers in the Gorbeia area are involved in making craft
produce such as honey, craft beer, Idiazabal cheese, pastel vasco, cider, apple
juice and jams. Leather and wooden crafts are also made locally from natural
materials.

windsurfing and sailing. There are two
well-equipped picnic areas (Sorgimendi
and Zabalain) with tables, barbecues and
a small sandy beach area on the shore.
The nearby Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir is
surrounded by a fauna-rich marsh and is
also a popular spot with visitors.

If you are looking for more action, why
not visit the tree-top adventure park
Hontza Extrem (located near the town of
Oleta) and try the Tibetan bridges, flying
foxes and lianas. A quieter alternative
would be a trip to the Basque Pottery
Museum in Ollerias or to the religious
architectural heritage sites in the
Gorbeia. Two notable examples are the
Church of Andra Mari in Galdakao and
the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Oro in Zuia.
