My resume will show you the variety and extent of my experiences. In having directed, trained, taught, preached, spoken to large gathering and small groups, counseled, created and implemented ideas and programs and worked with youth of all ages I have learned as much as I have taught. I have experienced and learned the value of both ministering as part of team as well as initiating programs on my own. I have listened and learned the heartaches and difficulties facing families as I worked with parents to strengthen the family unit and young people to improve their relationship with parents and siblings. I have occupied the pulpit for Sunday services, performed weddings and officiated at funerals seeing both the good and hard side of ministry. I have learned the importance of agreement in vision and submission to authority in ministry as well as the heavy responsibilities and accountability that accompany the office of pastor and teacher. Believing, salvation is available to all who receive the teaching of forgiveness through the shed blood of Jesus Christ with a willingness to apply this in a personal way while seeking God’s forgiveness for sin, restores fellowship with God, and has allowed me to participate in ministry across like-minded denominations in many meaningful ways over the years.

Our mission to educate and energize each student to impact their world for
Jesus is an exciting commitment and partnership with you. Your support has
directly impacted the advancements we have made in leadership, scholarship,
and service, and in turn, our students are impacting theWoodbury community
and beyond.
This past year, we have continued to see our students grow as they think
beyond themselves in service to others. I was inspired after hearing a story
of one of our fifth graders who visited a nursing home and realized
many of the residents did not receive a birthday card. She felt led
to show the love of Jesus to those residents and has since been
organizing her friends and family to write encouraging birthday
cards for the residents. Our students are truly changing the lives
of people around them!
A senior shared during our
senior-led chapel his high
school experience at New
Life Academy. While the
academics and educational
opportunitieshaveprepared
him for the next step as he
attends the University of
Minnesota next year, it was
his heart for the Lord and the younger students following
in the footsteps of his senior class that were so inspiring and
what truly embodies the mission of New Life Academy. It’s a
joy to see students impact those around them as they grow
in their faith.
I am delighted by the amazing accomplishments of our
faculty and students this past year. I hope you enjoy seeing
the mission of New Life Academy impacting our students
throughout this year’s annual report and share in the

2015-16 was a year of continued strategic progress and
performance improvement. As a strategic board, the
Governing Council’s role is to think and act on behalf of the
next generation of students. Its principal responsibilities
are to create a long-term strategic plan, which provides
for the viability of NLA, to provide the leadership and
resources to cause its mission to flourish, to hire, support
and evaluate the Head of School, and to oversee the
implementation of the strategic plan.
NLA has continued to make progress within its strategic
plan in the areas of spiritual development, educational
programs, professional development, financial performance,
and fundraising. The Governing Council remains passionate
in its pursuit of excellence, and we are pleased to share that
we compare favorably to the best faith-based and private
schools in the country.
This has also been a year marked by leadership transition.
After 5 successful years as our Head of School, Cade Lambert
returned to Des Moines Christian as its new Superintendent.
Lynn Atkinson is serving as our Interim Head of School for the
2016-17 school year while the Governing Council completes
a national search for the next Head of School. We will
communicate over the next few months regarding our search
process and progress. Elementary Principal Brian Goodbar
moved to Colorado, and he is succeeded by Joanna Richter
from Heritage Christian Academy. Curt Wetsel retired from
his Athletic Director role after more than three decades, and
he is succeeded by Kevin Kleiner. Amy Clausen, a talented
marketing executive, is our new Director of Enrollment and
Marketing. We appreciate the service of those who have
moved on and are excited by the fresh perspectives their
successors will bring.
I want to acknowledge the impressive commitment and
talent of our Governing Council and especially thank our
retiring trustees John Cremers and Barry Schalkle who
have blessed us with wisdom and dedication since 2010.
I also wish to welcome Michelle Schumacher and Danette
Bucsko who will be joining the council. Finally, I’d like to
thank New Life Church and its Elders, who continue to
partner with the Governing Council and support NLA’s
mission in untold ways.

GROW 2020Strategic Plan
Grow 2020, our strategic plan, was created in 2014 to move
more intentionally toward our mission of educating and
energizing each student to impact their world for Jesus Christ
and to reach their full potential in scholarship, leadership, and
service out of love for God and one another.
We have made significant strides in each area. Academically,
we capped each teacher’s period load to five to allow more
time for planning and innovation as we work toward our
goal of higher ACT scores. Spiritually, we’ve implemented
discipleship groups and teacher-student mentorships to
ensure all of our secondary students are growing in faith
each year, which will continue to be measured through
parent surveys.
Your gifts have played a significant role in our success so far.
We are grateful for the partnership that allows us to pursue
God’s plans for our school.

Designed to develop leadership and service, these experiences grow our students in faith and
allow them to be the hands and feet of Jesus.”
Changing Students FROM THE
INSIDE OUT
There are many opportunities for students to get involved
at NLA. Each student chooses to use their God-given
talents differently, and senior Samantha St. Cyr uses hers
through music.
“It’s a way that I can use my talents to worship God,” said
St. Cyr, who is a vocalist in chapel band. She says leading
givesheranopportunitytobeaspiritualleaderinthehigh
school. “Having your own personal relationship with the
Lord and letting that shine through while you worship
encourages the rest of the students to worship as well
and creates a domino effect among the student body.”
One of St. Cyr’s favorite moments of leading worship
happened last year. Chapel had finished and students
had been dismissed to flex time, but they were given
the opportunity to stay and worship while the band
continued to play a few more songs. “Many stayed and it
was incredibly powerful being able to see the Holy Spirit
at work, and everyone passionate about being there and
praising God,”she said.
St. Cyr also said being at NLA has encouraged her in her
relationship with Christ and with others: “I’ve been able
to connect with a great group of friends who encourage
each other in our faith.”

Spiritual, Leadership & Service Development
Through Learning Excursions.
The generous gifts we receive to our annual giving fund
provide support for student growth both inside and
outside of the classroom, allowing them to grow in new
ways. Though the classroom is irreplaceable, we believe
that some of the most important lessons we learn happen
in real life, in the world around us. At NLA, we value offering
our students a chance to see how God is moving on a larger
scale--that’s why we integrate class learning excursions into
our spiritual development plan.
Learning excursions happen in Grade 6, 10, 11, and 12.
These learning excursions include team-building activities,
chapel with small group discussions, and enjoying and
exploring God’s creation outdoors. In addition to the fun
and games, students love the opportunity to get away from
the usual business of school and connect with God and
others in a new way.
Teachers feel the same way, said high school instructor
Nicole Case.“As a teacher, it’s always a nice change of pace to
be able to spend time with kids outside of the 48 minutes I
get with them during the day. I think the students also enjoy
getting to see a different side of their teachers,”she said.
Through this extended time of Christ-focused character
building and community, students have a unique chance
to deepen their relationships with the Lord, their teachers,
and their classmates.
With your support, we are excited to continue building an
amazing community of student leaders ready to impact
the world for the Gospel through our growing spiriutal
developement programs.
Last year, NLA students from grades 6-12 took the Gospel beyond the
four walls of the classroom as they served at Feed My Starving Children.
Their service was both a response to the Gospel and to a challenge from
Mark Crea, FMSC’s executive director, to get involved in a community-
wide mobile pack event. NLA students took the first shift at the FMSC
event at Bielenberg Sports Center and packed 807 boxes, which totals
185,000 meals and equates to 507 kids fed for a year.
The students’dedication to service impacted the recipients of the food
along with the greater community. Teachers, parents, and students
alike were overjoyed and powerfully impacted to see high schools of
theWoodbury community come together for people who need FMSC’s
MannaPacks to survive.
The great success of the packing day at NLA is just the beginning of a
legacy NLA hopes to nurture.“Service is something that sets NLA apart
from other schools,” said Becky Wallerick, Academic Dean at New Life.
“Staff lays the groundwork to prepare the hearts of students for service
because it is important that they have the opportunity to do things for
others”, added Lynn Atkinson, Secondary Principal.

This year, your giving allowed us to implement a new
program for 6th-12th graders: the 15% Innovation Portfolio
(IP) for Science.
Modeled after 3M’s successful rule where employees spend
time on an idea they didn’t have time to explore during
their workday, NLA’s IP program allows secondary students
to spend 15% of their science track in creative time outside
classroom lessons to pursue an idea or passion in science,
engineering, or coding.
Through the 15% IP program, we inspire our students to
take knowledge, dream big, have self-confidence, and
find ways to change the world. We believe this program
will prepare our students for higher levels of academia
and the competitive business environment. They will
graduate with a strong collection of accomplishments
(their innovation portfolio) and a spirit of determination,
creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation.
“We are passionate about living out Christ’s call to honor Him in all we do.”
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
New Life Academy senior Demetra
(Demi) Salls was recently named a 2017
National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist.
Each year, approximately 16,000
National Merit Semifinalists emerge
from approximately 1.6 million students
that take the Preliminary SAT/National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/
NMSQT®). Semifinalists are the highest-
scoring entrants in each state and
represent less than one percent of each
state’s high school seniors.
“The first time I met Demi, I knew what
an exceptional student she was. She has
energy and a passion for learning that is infectious,” said
Becky Wallerick, New Life Academy Academic Dean.
Demi is currently taking a heavy load of college-level and
Advanced Placement courses and is a member of the
National Honor Society, displaying determination, passion,
commitment and confidence in all she does. She is also
the captain of the Varsity Football Cheer team, where she
enjoys mentoring other students. She
plans to pursue a career in Biomedical
Engineering and has developed a short
list of universities that she is interested
in, but has not committed to one just yet.
Demi started New Life Academy as a
sophomore and recognizes the role
that a small school environment and
individualized attention has played in
her education.
“I transferred to New Life looking for
a school that would not only feed my
intellectual curiosity, but my spiritual
needs as well. I have fantastic teachers, and I know that
they truly care about me and my fellow students,”she said.
New Life Academy congratulates Demi Salls for her
accomplishments in being named a 2017 National Merit
Scholarship Semifinalist! Achieving this level of distinction
is a testament of her hard work, commitment, and intellect.

Makerspaces, designed to encourage creativity, learning,
and exploration, allow students to learn in collaborative and
innovative environments as they engage in hands-on activities.
Thanks to your amazing generosity through a Fund-A-Need, we
were able to purchase equipment for our school’s Makerspaces. So
far, we have invested in a 3D printer and scanner, sewing machines,
a full recording studio with cameras, lighting, and microphones,
robotics equipment, circuitry sets,
and e-textile supplies.
Melissa Kalinoff, NLA’s Media
Specialist, said it’s exciting to
watch students problem solve
as they pursue areas they want
to learn more about. “It’s hard
to get the kids to leave when it’s
Makerspace time,” she said. “One day, a group of boys was so
intent working on troubleshooting a project that they didn’t
notice the entire class walk out when the bell rang!”
We’re excited to see more students get involved, pursuing
projects they are passionate about and developing new skills
along the way.

After 25 years of teaching Pre-K at NLA, Karen Thigpen
recently retired. She says pouring into the little lives
of her young students and teaching them truths from
God’s Word was one of her favorite parts of teaching.
Getting to see her students grow in their love for God
throughout the years as they continued through NLA
was also a major highlight for Karen.
NLA will always hold a special place in the hearts of the
Thigpen family, as Karen has 3 NLA graduates herself.
“God was so faithful to guide, direct and provide in
every situation. I truly learned to trust the Lord in every
situation and to look to Him for the answers to our
needs,”she said.
As she heads into retirement, Karen is looking forward

With 17 years in the books as a teacher at NLA, David
Woolf, who teaches elementary physical education,
high school health and strength training, and most
recently, outdoor education, is the recipient of this year’s
Elementary Teacher of theYear award.
“It is really rewarding to see the kids enjoy physical
activity, having fun, and being active,” David said. “I love
to see the motivation that brings them to do their best.”
Along with getting to work with other great Christian
educators every day, NLA is special to David because he is
able to have his own three children attend the school and
teach them himself.

Seasoned middle school history teacher Laura Allen just wrapped up her 14th year
of teaching at New Life Academy. Setting her apart as an outstanding educator is
Laura’s unique ability to point out God’s love through the teaching of history to
groups of independent, eager middle-schoolers.
In the past year, Laura says that her proudest accomplishment stems from the
opportunity she had to take 61 students to Washington D.C. “Teaching about
these places, people, and events is one thing, but being there to watch as
students put it all together was a joy.”
Laura enjoys being part of the New Life Community because it feels like
both a family and a fellowship of believers. Getting to travel with students
and watching them mature into adults with hearts for Christ has been an
uplifting part of her journey, as well as getting to watch her son Braydon
attend the school that has become so dear to her heart.

projects were even rewarded with grants from Thrivent Financial.
Gifted and talented students created miniature golf course holes,

created buildings to be printed on 3D printers, one is writing a book
about animals, and another group of students put on a math carnival
for kindergartners.
Third grader Marie Urquia created a “puppy pole” for her younger
sister Milena, who often spends time at the Children’s Hospital.
Marie watched as her sister suffered through IV insertion, and she
wanted her to be able to move around. Marie created a way to
attach a dog harness to her sister with a strap to connect to the
pole. Now, her sister could scooter, walk, or skip around as the pole
dragged behind her. “I truly believe that Marie will be an engineer
someday!”Lutes said.

LEARNING
LOUISE ERICKSON
In her twenty-five years of teaching at NLA, Louise Erickson
has been part of a major shift in education. One program
leading the way is Minds in Motion, which consists of 10-
15 minutes of exercises that
help enhance student brain
function. Erickson says that
teachers and students alike
have benefited by the increase
of exercise and focus.
Erickson and her fellow
elementary teachers also incorporate “Daily Five” and
“CAFÉ” into their language programs to encourage
students to keep a collection of books and a personal
writing journal that they can use to improve their language
skills. Erickson says it’s important for teachers to discover
how each student learns.

Some might call him the voice of the Eagles. For twenty years,
Matt Engstrom has been a faithful volunteer at New Life
Academy--including announcing at football and basketball
games. After teaching at NLA in the early 1990s, Engstrom
wanted to find a good way to stay involved even as he moved
on in his career. He says his choice to be connected to New
Life Academy through volunteering has affected both him
and the school in a positive way.
“Volunteering affects me personally by knowing that my
contributions improve the atmosphere at events. Plus, it’s fun,
and being loud is encouraged,”he said.“I think it impacts the
school by introducing some school spirit and provides some
promotion. I’ve been told that opponents like to come to NLA
for the atmosphere.”
In addition to announcing at sports events, Engstrom has
coached the middle school girls’ basketball team, adding
enthusiasm and fun to the court for a team of girls with a
very broad range of talent. He views his volunteer role as an
opportunity to give back to the school while displaying the
love of God.“Mostly, I hope I’m representing Christ,”he said.

MATT ENGSTROM

As of July 2016, Kevin Kleiner has succeeded the beloved
Curt Wetsel as NLA’s new athletic director, and we could not
be more excited about all he has to offer our school. Kevin,
who recently received his MA in Organizational Leadership,
joins us with plenty of coaching experience--he has coached
football, baseball, and basketball at high school and college
levels, including a stint with NLA‘s football team in 2014.
Of particular significance is Kevin’s Christ-centered view
on athletic success. After attending Christian school from
his elementary years through college at the University of
Northwestern, he has developed an inspiring perspective of
what it means to be successful on the field and court.“Athletic
success comes when we honor the Lord when we practice
and compete. Yes, we want to win games and matches, but
we will do so in a manner that represents and honors the Lord
and NLA to the best of our abilities,”he said.
Kevin is especially excited to equip students for their future
through sports. “My dream is that all students develop not
only as athletes but as people during their seasons. Our
purpose is to challenge young men and women to grow
in their faith, in academics, in their relationships, in their
character and as athletes. We want to prepare them for life
through athletics.”

Exploring Talents & Passions
Pursuing Personal & Team Excellence
EMMY ERICKSON
Between sports, music, and academics, 9th grader Emmy
Erickson has her work cut out for her--but her passion
to put her faith in action through her talents makes the
discipline easier. A member of NLA’s basketball team, its
state championship softball team, and Morningstar, NLA’s
elite music group, Emmy has grown in her gifts and her faith
through her involvement.
“Music pushes her individually, while athletics push her
to work in a team environment where, hopefully, she is
encouraging others,” said Emmy’s mom, Colene Erickson.
“We’ve seen Emmy develop godly confidence as she learns to
trust Christ while pursuing music, athletics, and academics.”
Colene said the supportive environment NLA has created is
particularly helpful for students who want to get involved.
“Emmy’s instructors are very patient and do their best to work
around her schedule,”she said.“We feel very blessed that New
Life gives her so many opportunities to pursue her passions.”

Tuition assistance is a thriving program at New Life Academy,
providing many families access to Christian education.
Because of the generosity and support of many people, we
are able to contribute to this program every year through
events like the NLA Golf Classic--a much anticipated event,
particularly for the avid golfers amongst us. The event builds
community through competition, games, and time on the
greens and ultimately advances our school.
On September 21, 2015, our 18th year, 103 golfers came
out on a sunny day in support of the mission at New Life
Academy and raised over $36,000. Congratulations to Flight
A 1st Place winners Steve Braatz, Chad Kleppelid, Ryan Lewis,
and Tony Sheuerman and Flight B 1st Place winners Paul
Clemens, Nick Germann, Peter Germann, and Jack Reed!
Sounds of steel drums and surf wafted over those gathered
to support the Academy on April 16, 2016. This year’s theme,
New Life at the Caribbean Beach Bash & Bidding Auction, was
a huge success and broke Academy records once again.
Over450Attendees,24Sponsors,235Donors,andmorethan
100 volunteers helped to raise over $317,000 for Academy
students and programs. While having fun the night at the
auction, we also raised critical support for Academy students
in the areas of tuition assistance that will support the 25%
of our student body who receives financial help, STEAM
equipment to strengthen our science program, and new
playground equipment for our elementary students.
Without your support each year, we would not be able to
achieve our school’s mission of educating and energizing
every student to positively impact their world for Christ.
We’re eager to see what God does to further it at next year’s
auction, scheduled for April 1, 2017.You won’t want to miss it!

Every spring, high school students try out for Morningstar,
NLA’s auditioned touring choir. Though the choir is
competitive, director Cindy Martinson says it’s equal parts
ministry and competition. Morningstar is an additional
opportunity for students
to live out NLA’s mission by
shining the love of Christ into
the community.
Martinson, who rehearses
the choir, chooses the music,
and sets up performances,
is passionate about using
music as worship to develop
students both spiritually and
musically. “While sharing my passion for music, I also get
to share my love for the Lord and my love for students and
their learning,”she said.
As part of their commitment to the choir, students rehearse
three days a week at 7am and participate in performances
throughout the school year. The choir members clearly work
hard as they pursue their gifts and talents, but Martinson says
she defines success differently.
“Most classroom success stories are tied
directly into the traditional educational
outcomes like grades and test scores. While
we have had plenty of success stories related
to these types of outcomes, the real measure
of musical success at NLA comes in the
things less seen. When you attend a concert,

Every year, the students of New Life Academy share the love of
God through musical performances. From elementary musicals to
worship choir and Grandparents’ Day programs, worshiping the
Lord through the gift of song is a major part of both our spiritual
development and outreach efforts.
Through this year’s Fund-A-Need, we were able to purchase
new performance risers. Cindy Martinson, NLA’s Choir Director,
is especially thankful and
excited to put the risers to
use in performances for years
to come.
“Our performances display
our students’ love for their
audience, for music, and the
joy that they have with sharing
about our Lord and Savior,”she
said.“It’s so special for them to
share their hard work in each and every performance.“
“I want to thank the NLA community for their generous gift to the music program,”Martinson said.“Because of you, we can
continue to grow in excellence as we worship God through music.”

Celebrating
YOUR GENEROSITY
“Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time
we will reap if we do not grow weary.”
Galatians 6-9
Your generous gifts sow directly into the mission of New Life
Academy to equip and energize students for Christ. Because
of the seeds you have planted, we are able to reap a harvest of
students ready to change the world for Jesus, and we couldn’t
be more thankful. We are excited to highlight the 2015-16
donors-those who have partnered with us to extend our God-
given mission into the community and the world.

LEADERSHIP AWARD
CURT WETSEL
After three decades of service as NLA’s athletic director, Curt
Wetsel has stepped into retirement, leaving a major legacy
behind. In addition to being a firefighter for 34 years and an
EMT for 22, Curt said that he has never felt called to anything
else. He credits the Lord, the community of NLA, and the staff
that impacts each other as reasons for staying for so long.
You could always find Curt in the hallways at NLA, high-fiving
student athletes reminding them that it was game day. It was
one of his favorite parts of being the athletic director. “I like to
brighten people’s days and get them to smile.”

forward to spending more time with their grandchildren and
traveling--he even plans to go to Guatemala in November to
help drill a well.

graciously donated $47,505 through the event’s
Fund-a-Need for new playground equipment. It’s
only a few months into the school year, and our
energetic and enthusiastic early childhood and
elementary students have already broken in the
new playground.
Play is essential to social, emotional, cognitive and
the physical well-being of children. More than
just a metal structure outside the classroom, the
playground is a place of adventure where peer
interactions help students build resiliency as they
learn to cooperate, overcome challenges and
negotiate with others.

Victoria Rogness has always had an interest in science and
medicine, but it wasn’t until she volunteered at Regions Hospital
in high school that she discovered her God-given calling. “As I
saw more and more anxiety and stress in hospital environments,
I realized that I wanted to be the person who alleviates the
problem and restores hope.”
The summer before her junior year, Tori took a month-long
course to receive her nursing certificate. That school year, she
started weekend shifts at a nursing home.“Knowing that I would
have little time on weekends for homework meant that I had to
be more diligent about planning my work in advance,”she said.
She says that teachers were flexible with her and helped her
become aware of large projects ahead of time.
ToriisnowstudyingneuroscienceattheUniversityofMinnesota.
“Pursuing a science major, of course, does not come with an easy
course load. But I’ve found that because of my excitement and
passion about the material, studying and putting in the effort I
need to do well comes fairly easily,”Tori said.
Tori credits New Life for giving her a community of support
through teachers and students during her high school career.
In addition, the knowledge she gained from her classwork
has helped prepare her to be academically successful in her
college courses.

WHY WE GIVE
DAVE & JENNY MEIER
“As parents of alum, we continue our support
of New Life Academy because of the impact it
had on our three children, the role it played in
their spiritual and character growth, and the
preparation it provided for their pursuit of their
undergraduate degrees. We know that Annual
Giving will allow others to have the same
blessed experiences that we were afforded.”

Did you know 1 in 4 students at New Life Academy receive some form of tuition
assistance? Thanks to your generous partnership, it has become possible for
Christian education to impact the lives of more families. Stephanie Pedro, whose
daughters Emma and Lucy both attend NLA, said Christian education would
simply not be an option for them without financial help.
“Tuition assistance has been the single most important factor for us,”she said.“We
are overwhelmed by the generosity of donors who have made this possible for
our family.”
After six years in the public school system, Stephanie and her husband Steven
knew they wanted something more for their girls. “The thing I appreciate most
about New Life Academy is the feeling of family--the teachers and staff are
supportive, friendly, and sincerely care for our children,”she said.
In addition to the community, Stephanie and Steven particularly appreciate the
Christian values taught at the Academy. “We feel strongly about Jesus being the
center of our lives, so naturally it makes sense to allow Him into our school where
we spend the majority of our time as children. Our kids have definitely grown
closer to God here,” she said. “We look forward to the day when we can pay it
forward so other families like ours can experience New Life!”
