6. No metric for tons of foodscraps processed?
We are not composting our own material right now- scaling composting has come
in fits and starts, and with A LOT of set backs.
Here are some iterations of what that has looked like:
8. De-coupling soil blending, composting, and hauling
-Building tipping fees into our hauling business model means we are not relying on needing to process any of
that material ourselves.
-This is a particularly useful option for non-NOP material
-Without a very established composting operation, composting all our own scraps is a vulnerable approach
-Partnering with a larger operation to make our compost has allowed us to bridge a gap in scale that we could not
-Provided essential material for our soil blends, allowing us to scale soil blend production and revenue as
well as focus our resources on scaling soil blends
-We will likely continue to have a hybrid approach that includes transferring non-NOP scraps to another
composter, leveraging their scale through partnership to bridge demand gaps for compost, and composting as
much as possible ourselves
Operations haven’t changed much, and there are some weaknesses to that. Focusing on route capacity percentages has been key. We would not have seen this much growth without Heinens. In scaling commercial, we have had to balance the tradeoff between larger clients that are a major source of revenue, versus many smaller clients that are geographically dispersed but diversify our customer base to make it more resilient.
Drop-off program has grown pretty organically, but curbside pickup growth has grown through very intentional marketing. Pushing this program along to a point where it’s at a larger scale is an important step in our growth because it demonstrates how we could provide the service through partnerships with municipalities. Continual process improvement to shorten time spent servicing each bucket, as well as keeping close tabs on route density has been key as we grow.
Takeaways: cannot understate the importance of the SURFACE. Go to the site when it’s really rainy. Talk to people about the equipment you’re considering, especially in similar climates with similar systems!
