12. What is coaching?
“Help people set better goals and then reach those goals.
Ask their clients to do more than they would have done on
their own. Help their client to focus better so as to produce
results more quickly. Provide clients with the tools, support
and structure to accomplish.” Thomas Leonard, “Father of modern
coaching”
“Unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own
performance.”
John Whitmore, Coaching For Performance
“I help you think things through, then do it.” Nick Ellse, first
coach I ever met
“A coach helps people make the best use of their own
resources to meet their goals.” Sue Johnston

17. Powerful questioning
“The most serious
mistakes are not
being made as a
result of wrong
answers. The most
dangerous thing is
asking the wrong
questions.”
Peter Drucker
19. But first - Active Listening
Levels of Listening
0 Pretend
1 Selective
2 Attentive
3 Empathic
20. Powerful questioning
• Questions are at the heart of coaching and are a
coach’s most important tool.
• A good question at the appropriate time can set
change in motion for your clients by creating
insight or inspiration.
• It’s not, “The right question at the right time.”
There is no one “right way” of coaching.
21. Powerful questioning
• (The) ability to ask questions that reveal the information
needed for maximum benefit to the coaching relationship
and the client
• Asks questions that reflect active listening and an
understanding of the client’s perspective
• Asks questions that evoke discovery, insight,
commitment or action (e.g., those that challenge the
client’s assumptions)
• Asks open-ended questions that create greater clarity,
possibility or new learning
• Asks questions that move the client towards what they
desire, not questions that ask for the client to justify or
look backwards
22. Powerful questioning
Coach Mistakes
• Being self-conscious
• Misunderstanding
“powerful”
• Ask “leading” questions
• Trying to use
challenging,
provocative, life-
changing questions
• Settling for the first
answer
• Asking why questions
using “Why?”
The Fix
• Focus on client/team
• Curiosity can be
powerful
• Ask curious questions
• Trying too hard never
works. Ask questions
that make clients/teams
think
• Ask, “Anything else?”
and “What else?”
• Get to why using
“What?” and “How?”
questions
