• According to National Academy of Engineering and other Organization many
University around the world are making an effort to recognize the challenges
faced by Engg Education Program
– What should be taught in Engineering ?
– How to teach students by recognizing how they learn?
– Making changes to achieve what we call “Excellence in Engineering
Education”
– Define specific and measurable outcomes to challenge itself and Engg
community to achieve goal of excellence in Engg
• Excellence may have to be defined in terms of
– Effectiveness
– Engagement
– Efficiency
• This should provide students opportunity to develop individual characteristic
and skills that will positively impact student's future career.
Excellence in Engg Education
• Integral part of Engineer’s profile is development of knowledge , skills and
attitude that dictate the goal towards which student’s skill and knowledge will
be directed
• From faculty point of view Fromm defines detailed list of characteristics
which a future Engineering undergraduate must possess to become leader
of profession including strong foundation in
– Basic Sciences
– Mathematics
– Engineering fundamentals
– Capacity to apply these fundamentals to a variety of problems including
others
– An environment in which creative students and faculty can join
colleagues beyond the campus to develop and test new paradigm of
University and college

• Among undergraduate vs graduate vs professional education
– E.g. Education vs training
• Among Science vs humanities, life science vs everything else
• Eherman summarizes goal of Engineering education as “What
undergraduates students need to learn or develop in future are a
combination of certain knowledge, skill and wisdom”
• User centered design is widely used while designing Engineering system
and process. In educational system and goal from human perspective
students are the “Users” for development and evaluation of educational
environment. Students learn more when they are intensely involved. Even in
policy making views perception and definition of Under graduate students
are aligned with views of other stake holders for excellence in education.

Excellence in Engg Education • According to National Academy of Engineering and other Organization many University around the world are making an effort to recognize the challenges faced by Engg Education Program – What should be taught in Engineering ? – How to teach students by recognizing how they learn? – Making changes to achieve what we call “Excellence in Engineering Education” – Define specific and measurable outcomes to challenge itself and Engg community to achieve goal of excellence in Engg • Excellence may have to be defined in terms of – Effectiveness – Engagement – Efficiency • This should provide students opportunity to develop individual characteristic and skills that will positively impact student's future career.

Excellence in Engg Education • Integral part of Engineer’s profile is development of knowledge , skills and attitude that dictate the goal towards which student’s skill and knowledge will be directed • From faculty point of view Fromm defines detailed list of characteristics which a future Engineering undergraduate must possess to become leader of profession including strong foundation in – Basic Sciences – Mathematics – Engineering fundamentals – Capacity to apply these fundamentals to a variety of problems including others – An environment in which creative students and faculty can join colleagues beyond the campus to develop and test new paradigm of University and college

Excellence in Engg Education • Key characteristics of education in society of learning including being learner centered – Affordable – Supportive for lifelong learning – A seamless web • Interactive and Collaborative • Asynchronous and ubiquitous • Diverse intelligent and adaptive • University and Institution must achieve balance • Among Missions – Teaching – Research – Service • Among Disciplines – Liberal Education – Education Disciplines – Profession
  • 6. Excellence in Engg Education • Among undergraduate vs graduate vs professional education – E.g. Education vs training • Among Science vs humanities, life science vs everything else • Eherman summarizes goal of Engineering education as “What undergraduates students need to learn or develop in future are a combination of certain knowledge, skill and wisdom” • User centered design is widely used while designing Engineering system and process. In educational system and goal from human perspective students are the “Users” for development and evaluation of educational environment. Students learn more when they are intensely involved. Even in policy making views perception and definition of Under graduate students are aligned with views of other stake holders for excellence in education.

Excellence in Engg Education • From student’s perspective- What is excellence in engineering education? – General example of excellence- • Students achieving excellence in class/professional career, • finding internship • Personal and professional skill-problem solving, • networking, • responsibility, • visual skills and • team work – Resources-up to date learning – Professor’s characteristics-good and responsible professors – Knowledge-oriented to improve current knowledge – Need for example or real life application-real life applications – Community- Excellence in people/students or peers, student teacher ratio – Hard work-hard work and effort – Hands on –hands on
