Entrepreneurship has exploded across the globe in recent years, but intrapreneurship is largely ignored. Intraprenuers are the men and women creating new products and experimenting with new business models within large corporations. Unlike entrepreneurship, they do this with the backing of their corporation and their full salary, decreasing their risk exposure to zero. It's fun, it's impactful, and it's a great stepping stone to venturing out on your own. Learn how to get started in intraprenuership by getting a copy of our new free book.

What is an
intrapreneur?
3. C O D E L I T T. C O M
Intrapreneurs are employees who create new
products or services for the organizations they
work for, without taking on any of the usual
entrepreneurial risks themselves.

intrapreneurs do?

Intrapreneurs are looking for innovation opportunities for
their employers.
They work on projects such as:
Exploring new technologies
Developing new products or services for new or existing
customers
Packaging existing products or services for new customers
Creating innovations in the core product
Creating new, better ways to perform business activities

9. Insight
Most intrapreneurial ideas are started with an insight, a thought such as:
Etc.

“We’re doing
this
inefficiently”
“We can easily
improve product
quality by doing…”
“Customers are
begging for this.
Why don’t we
give it to them”

10. Problem validation
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
After having that initial insight, an intrapreneurs job is to prove,
without a doubt, that this problem or opportunity exists. This can
be accomplished with multiple methods, such as demographic
research, user testing, surveys, data mining, and the like.
If it’s impossible to prove, then it will be almost impossible to get
the support required to execute the idea.

11. The Idea

The vast majority of problems have many solutions. The idea is
the intraprenuers prefered solution to solving the problem.
If the problem is validated but the solution falls flat, then other
solutions may be proposed and tested.

12. Colleague support

It’s almost impossible to execute an internal idea by oneself.
An intraprenuer needs support from key colleagues such as
those in sales, marketing, design, finance and any other
departments that might be relevant (like customer support, or
supply chain, etc.).
These colleagues will provide ideas, assets, data, and expertise to
fortify The Idea.

13. Senior sponsor

After colleague support is gained, it’s time to put together a small
presentation and pitch the idea to directors who may be
interested in it. It’s very important for intrapreneur to find
directors who they know are already interested in what they are
trying to accomplish. If there is one director who keeps
complaining about manufacturing costs, and the intrapreneur has
an idea to speed up manufacturing, they will seek out that
director. If the intraprenuer already has relationships with senior
decision makers, they can usually skip this step.

14. The business plan

With the director’s blessing, generally the next step is to create a
business plan that will be used to pitch the senior decision
makers. This plan needs to convey things like timelines, finances,
personnel, marketing, ROI, and anything else management
might need to get the complete picture of The Idea.

15. Solution validation

If the pitch goes well, the intraprenuer has been given the
green light to test out The Idea! But before it is rolled out at
scale, there will be tests conducted to see if the assumptions
made come to fruition.

The Idea is expected.
