4. Depression is real. And usually, those experiencing it are not open enough to share their story.
This is how we are losing many great souls out there. So, let us join hands in preventing
depression related deaths all around the globe.
How can we do this?
Observe! Always make time for those around you and when you notice a sense of withdrawal or
any of the symptoms indicated above, talk to them. Find out what is wrong and in cases where the
situation seems too big for you to handle, involve an adult or someone who is better qualified to
help in the guidance and counselling process.
It’s all fun and games until you are the one depressed. So make time for those around you and let
us work hand-in-hand in dealing with depression.

6. FOREWORD
In the most trying of times, I found comfort in the little world that I
had built for myself. And that tiny world of mine was called “Sizwe’s
Lounge”.
In it, I managed to handle any kind of depression, boredom, curiosity
and unpleasantness that lay within me. This built me to become
greater and bolder to face each and every day with hope and faith. So,
I decided to share that little world of mine with everyone out there
that believed that they could spare some time to go through what I
had in store for them.
Sizwe’s Lounge is going to be a monthly magazine and in it, we will
share stories of hope, success, humour, excitement and fun from
individuals all over the world after having a heartfelt interview with
each and every one of them for specifically, this magazine.
In this issue, we have started with South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi and
Kenya. And as we go through every month together, we look forward
to growing the brand and engaging more people from a far wider
scope of the world at large.
Feel free to ask where necessary, correct where faulty, suggest where
incomplete and commend where fit. We look forward to hearing from
you all.
Thank you for choosing Sizwe’s Lounge and we look forward to
hearing from you on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, our current
website and our email.
Stay blessed!
9. “She does not strive for
perfection, she is
perfection!” were the
words of one of the avid
Malawian fashion
enthusiasts at the
Fashion for Change
event that took place at
Amaryllis Hotel in
Blantyre, Malawi, a
couple of months ago.
She beamed with
excitement the moment
she heard the name
‘Christina Mabvuto’ and
kept her spirits high
throughout the brief
interview that we had
with her about the
model. Who is Christina
Mabvuto, you may ask?
That is the same
question that we had
before we knew her but
only had her name to
hold on to.
You know Christina.
She is the jovial, elegant,
exquisite young lady that
you see holding shopping
bags on National Bank of
Malawi Visa Credit Cards
Billboards on the
roadsides and she is the
same lady that you see on
the auto teller machines
on the same ad. She is not
only an upcoming
billboard sensation but is
also quite the character
when you get to know her
in detail. Ladies and
gentlemen, it is with great
honour and pleasure that
we give you the very first
episode of Fashion Icons
right here on Sizwe’s
Lounge and in this
episode, we take you
through the journey of this
outstanding young lady
and the amazing story of
how she became the
fashion model that she is
today.
“Hallo everyone, my name
is Christina Mabvuto. I am
a proud Malawian aged 20.
Currently pursuing a
Bachelors Degree in
Business Administration
at the Polytechnic under
the University of Malawi. I
am in my second year and
I am a fashion model
when not behind a pile of
books during my
schooltime”.
How did this amazing
journey begin? How did
the average Christy
become the elegant Miss
Christina Mabvuto that we
all adore and love?
CHRISTINA
MABVUTO
10. “Well, my journey as a
model started a while ago
and it is all because of my
sister. She is a fashion
designer and she has
been operating under the
name ‘Scorpii Clothing’
whenever she is doing
what she knows best. It
all started with her asking
me to try out her designs
and before we knew it, I
was formally modelling
for her brand, walking
down the runway at the
African Fashion Festival in
November 2017, which
makes this 2 years exactly
ever since that glorious
day. I impressed everyone
that knew me at the event
but also attracted the
attention of the
organizers. They loved my
confidence and how I
composed myself, and as
time went by, I was asked
to be a part of the annual
event. This was strong
motivation for me and
from then on, I have taken
modelling seriously and I
believe that is one of the
things that has gotten me
to where I am today”.
How has the journey been
for such a young model
considering the fact that
she is in an industry that
is crammed to the brim
with slightly older
individuals?
“It has been amazing for
me really. The people in
the fashion industry are
very supportive. They have
helped mould me into a
more passionate and
confident model and
making acquaintances
which later became
friends and some, family,
has been exciting. I have
met a lot of
photographers, designers
and models that I would
have never come across if
not for the journey that I
embarked on”.
But amidst the progress,
there has to be a few
hiccups that this brilliant
young lady has faced
along the way. What are
some of these hiccups?
“Well, first of all, it tends
to be difficult to find any
job at some points in time.
This might be very
frustrating for many since
in such times one can
start to consider
themselves less of a
model seeing others
getting gigs all the time
and things of that sort. It
is quite natural in the
fashion industry. In
addition to that, there is a
very serious problem of
being underpaid in the
Malawian fashion
industry. The reasons to
this are not known to me
but usually what is
expected in some specific
tasks is way more than
what we actually receive.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE HAVE BEEN RECORDED ON THE 15TH OF NOVEMBER, 2019.
15. If such an issue is
addressed, I believe that
we can actually take off as
a nation as far as
modelling is concerned”.
With such hiccups
occurring from time to
time, what does she do to
overcome them?
“Obviously there are times
when there is no job for
me to do and as much as
it is frustrating, I tend to
accept the situation and I
always assure myself that
there is a gig in future that
is bigger, worth so much
more and better for me
and it keeps me going
everytime”.
Such an inspiring young
lady, don’t you think? It is
not so easy to understand
what really motivates her
every single time that she
poses in front of a camera
or when she takes a step
down the runway. What
exactly is it that she had
to say about this?
“I always want to make
myself proud. That is
where it begins. If I cannot
make myself proud with
what I do then there is no
way that I can impress
anyone out there. So, the
first rule that I have is to
always put in my all to
leave a mark inside of my
heart and then everything
else goes just the way I
want them to, smoothly”.
Were there any other
words that she left with
us as the interview came
to an end? Oh yes!
“Just keep at it! Never let
your first no be the point
of your retreat. Always
improve from where you
left off the previous time
and always believe that
the second or third or
fourth chance that you get
is going to be better than
the last” she said.
And to everyone that
made themselves present
for this interview, it is
without a doubt that they
can agree with me that
she kept smiling
throughout the interview.
The positive energy and
boldness that this young
lady has is remarkable
and breathtaking. The
world surely needs more
Christina Mabvutos if you
ask me.
But all in all, it was an
honour having this fashion
icon on Sizwe’s Lounge
and we look forward to
having the next fashion
icon with us right here in
our next issue of Sizwe’s
Lounge Magazine.
Thank you all for your
time and thank you for
choosing Sizwe’s Lounge.
Have a pleasant
November.

17. The crown just doesn’t fall on any head that fits but only on the head of one that deserves it and is
capable of pulling off all the responsibilities that come with it. And that is exactly what happened on
Saturday, the 8th of June 2018. A Blantyre born and raised young lady by the name of Zainab Phiri
(who will be referred to as Queen Zee in this case) who had just been at the school for a year was
crowned Miss Mzuni 2018 (Mzuzu University) after contesting in the Mr. and Ms. Mzuni Beauty
Pageant.
As hectic as the average university life can be for a newly admitted college student, this did not stop
her from going for what she wanted and walking away with the crown placed on her head as the night
came to an end. Was it a lot for her to handle? If it was, how did she handle the pressure? And first
thing’s first, what motivated her to even contest in the first place?
This is what she had to say.
18. “Honestly, the position is a lot of work but it does come with its perks. At first, it was distracting considering
the fact that I was new to the college life and I was still trying to adjust and yet we had to come up with tons
of proposals which meant skipping some classes and all that but as time went by, I learnt to balance my
school life, personal life and the new life I had just walked into. It was easier adjusting to the throne itself
because to me, the more difficult part was getting ready for the pageant. It was scary. The thought of walking
down the runway with hundreds of eyes gazing at what I was doing, some demotivating me with negative
screams and all that, it was not easy for me at all. Being in first year actually made things worse since I felt
that it would at the point restrict my chances of getting the crown. But in the end, all of that did not matter. I
did it! With the help of my friends of course; Ruth Junia Thenza, Tonia Toronosa Thomas and Rebecca
Maliko just to mention a few. They kept encouraging me, telling me that I could do it and regardless of
having stiff competition, I did not underestimate oneself for a second. It really took a lot of physical and
emotional practice which apparently
paid off.
At first, I thought that it was all about
being beautiful or being able to walk
right but I learnt that it was the
confidence that mattered most.
Believing in oneself counts. I walked
down that runway, ready to win. Ready
to prove to everyone that I was
confident of my body regardless of how
some people would call me fat and the
likes. And that thought of wanting to
achieve is what pushed me to the edge
and I made it. When I told my brother
about it, the first thing he said was that
‘instead of focusing on your studies,
you are busy contesting in beauty
pageants’. To some extent, he was
right, but he was certain that if I
channelled my efforts right, I would be
able to get my grades right and also be
Miss Mzuni. My mother thought the
same thing as well. One thing that I
can tell all the girls out there is that we
should support one other! We should
stand together and not stand against
one another. We should support and
not despise, that is the only way that
we can give birth to royalty as a nation.
My name is Zainab Phiri, and it has
been an honour being Miss Mzuni
2018. Thank you!”

“Wann!!!”
And that is how we begin our one on one session with
Upcoming Events Host and University of Malawi
Journalism student; Sandfor Sambwita, in yet another
‘Lifestyle’ segment right here on Sizwe’s Lounge. Read
on, and find out what this talented youngster has to tell us
about his career in the events industry.
“I was born on the 27th of November some years back in
the Capital City of Malawi; Lilongwe, and as far as my
memory serves me right, I have literally grown up in the
same city until recently when I had no other choice but to
attend my tertiary education in the city of Blantyre”, he
began.
“Honestly, being an events host was always a passion of
mine but reached its peak when I realized that I needed to
find a source of income that would enable me to support
my family and afford my journey to become a certified
journalist. So, in the year 2014, I took on my first step to
become an events host by co-hosting a talent show at the
secondary school that I used to learn at (Mitundu
Secondary School)”.
“Years went by, stages became more of a home to me
than just a venue for the exhibition of my skills and a year
or so ago, I came across the man that inspired me to
enjoy what I was blessed with and without a doubt, he
helped me build the brand that I embrace as of date. His
name is Gomezgani Tembo. He was hosting a fundraising
activity at the Polytechnic and I was the co-host. During
our time working together at that particular event, I learnt
so much by merely observing how he conducted himself
on stage. Later on, he taught me more and by the time he
was graduating, I had been nurtured on how to stand in
front of any type of crowd and deliver the very best”.
LIFESTYLE
29. “I AM
CURRENTLY
THE FIRST
PERSON IN MY
ENTIRE
COMMUNITY TO
SET FOOT IN A
TERTIARY
INSTITUTION”.
“As much as he was a mentor, I cannot specifically say I have
had a manager of my work. But I have come across some
specific individuals who have assisted me on my journey and
for the work that they have done, I am forever grateful. Such
individuals include Glayan Chiumia, Brian ‘Mystery’ Kububa and
last but not least, Lusu Manda, who has done the most
overtime in connecting me to several event planners and
getting me on stages that I never believed I could be on”.
“So far, I have managed to host the University of Malawi
Chancellors Trophy which was introduced by the State
President; Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, himself, during the
launch and prize presentation. I have also hosted the
Polytechnic Social Weekend; sharing the stage with big artists
such as Penjani ‘Fredokiss’ Kaluwa, Malinga Mafia, Saint, Jay
Jay Cee, Blackjak, Piksy, Sir Patricks and many others. In
addition to that, I have also worked in the gospel field on events
such as the Explo Breeze which featured artists such as Suffix,
Kelvin Singz, Progain, David Kalirani and also the Poly Crash
with Shammah Vocalz and Suffix that was organized by
Nthanda Artworks”.
“I am definitely not the best Malawi has to offer but with the little
that I have, I believe that God has his way of bringing out the
best in anyone that believes. I am currently the first person in
my entire community to set foot in a tertiary institution and
so far, I have managed to work with a lot of radio and television
stations. That is not luck. That right there is the work of God. If
he did it to me, he can do it to anyone out there who does not
look down on themselves. To be frank with you, school is not
enough to make a person successful in life. It is but a mere step
that everybody is required to take. On the other hand, talent can
help anyone become great with just the right amount of effort
and belief. So, take that step! Believe in that dream! Open
doors for those youngsters like myself that have talent, take
them to bigger stages. You can be a part of a far greater
tomorrow. To round it all up, I am not saying that I made it but I
believe in someone that did and always does. That is why I
would like to share my favourite scripture with you and that is
Jeremiah 29 vs. 11. All in all, I thank Sizwe’s Lounge for having
me and I look forward to more of what lies ahead.
God Bless You All!”

31. MUSIC
Just two years down her music career, Tanzanian
music sensation and model; Nasranoti released
quite the banger with fellow Tanzanian musician; Mr.
Blue, entitled “Naogopa” (Avaialable on Boomplay
and YouTube). She appeared on interviews right after
the release on several local television stations
including Clouds Plus Tv and made quite the noise in
readiness for her video release which took place
around August after being directed by the outstanding
Director Gazza. What exactly has motivated the
young lady to keep on pushing after releasing her
previous hit “Ananifanyaga”? And what does she
have in store for the world in the next coming
months? Or the oncoming year of 2020. This is what
she had to say to one of our reporters during an
interview.
“Honestly, the music industry is
not as easy as one would think.
Usually, a blooming artist like
myself goes through the pain of
being told that we are not good
enough or our singing isn’t as
good as they want. This usually
comes from bigger artists and
sometimes fans, this brings
32. down one’s motivation everytime. But it did not hold me back, I kept on pushing and it led to
where I am now. All that I did was focus on the fans that are positive when they listen to my
music or watch my videos and then I kept focusing on impressing those and as time went by the
fanbase kept growing” she said.
Apart from singing and modelling, Nasranoti operates a hair salon which helps her in raising
funds for her day-to-day living and some necessities that she has as a blooming artist in the
African music industry.
In her free time, the 24-year-old (clocking 25 on the 8th of December 2019) singer enjoys
dancing, working out and spending time with her loved ones.
“I will be releasing more good music soon and I would really appreciate it if you all kept showing
me the support and love that you have been showing all along. Thank you all! And don’t forget to
check my videos on YouTube, subscribe to my channel and leave a like”.
That was what she had to tell us and we believe her story will inspire many female artists out
there to come forward and show the world what they can do. From Sizwe’s Lounge, we say
have a wonderful month and we look forward to having you again in our next issue.

“Ukwakha Isizwe”
“Bengimane ngakha isizwe”, I continued.
“Kepha inkinga kuphela yokwakha isizwe ukuthi ayikho into efana nokuzenza umane”.
At the moment, I froze. I raised my head and stared into the poorly lit room, facing the dark
figures that sat motionless in front of me, ready to decide the fate that lay ahead for me. And it is
at that point, she ambled in. With the love of her life walking just a few feet from where she was. I
couldn’t help it but let out a soft smile that seemed to attract the attention of those in front of me.
“Any of this sounds interesting or exciting to you?” one of them asked. I swiftly shook back into
reality and slowly shook my head. It was a dead end. It was the end of the line for me and there
seemed to be no light coming in from the end of this tunnel.
34. I couldn’t help myself really. I slowly let my mind dissolve into a pool of thoughts, a whole world
altogether at this point. That is where she was, standing there; carrying a tray of her freshly
baked cupcakes and laughing as doves flew past her from all angles I could think of. Then, there
I was. Just a young boy holding on to her leg and losing myself in my own world that was in the
toy plane that I had carried at the time. “When I grow up, I want to be a pilot. I want to travel
the world. I want to see all there is in the whole wide world and then build it all in one place. I
want to build my very own...”
The wind hit my cheek with a hard blow.
I was still seated in front of the crowd. Facing them and awaiting the next question that was to
be imposed on me. Frankly, each question came like a dagger to my heart, stripping me of my
confidence and esteem, crippling me with fear and uncertainty of the future that I had assumed I
would end up having after all of this was over.
“You used to love playing with your toy blocks when you were young. You would build anything
that was in that amazing mind of yours. You would be anyone and would do anything in that
world of yours. But sadly, in this world that we live in, things are a bit different. Things are
tough and things are complicated”.
That was quite true.
I used to love my toy blocks. I used to love creating a different world each chance I got to play
with those blocks. I would be lost in a world that I assumed existed, a world I assumed I would
have. A world that now, seems to never have existed before and will probably never have its
chance in the world.
In the middle of all those blocks, I would place a figurine.
A symbol of dominance!
An icon!
Me!
And in that enclosed centre, I was safe. In that enclosed space, I had hope.
That enclosed space was in between the warm embrace of my loved one.
The apple of my eye, the very definition of love. The home of all good there is.
And I felt alive when in the middle of those plastic block walls that surrounded me.
That life is what I was clearly longing for as I sat there. I would die for just a moment in the
warm embrace of the loved one I kept glancing at from the wooden seat that I had been forced to
place myself on for hours of pure torment and emotional warfare. At this point, all those love
songs started making sense to me. I really would die just to see her smile again. I would catch a
grenade just to make sure she wasn’t the one catching it. I would let everything go just to have
her laugh at my jokes once again in the life that lay ahead.
I was keen to know what life had to toss my way after this.
But all in all, I was ready to build my nation once more. And deep down, I knew this was all a
part of “Ukwakha Isizwe”.

She is passionate about what she does because it
always reminds her who she is, and that is; a
dancer. To her, dancing is not just a hobby or an
occupation but it is the purpose to her existence.
In an interview with the South African born and
raised dancer; Black Coco, we managed to get a
fresher and more detailed experience of what lies
behind the curtain of the life of the 19-year-old
dance icon.
What does dance to mean to her?
“To me, dancing is an escape from the horrors of
the world that we live in. When dancing, I can
channel myself into any kind of character and can
be anyone I want to be in that moment depending
on what type of song I am dancing to. The rhythm
itself gives me the power to no longer be Onthatile
but be anyone I want to be and express any kind
of feeling that is within me so that in the end, I can
inspire everyone that watches me dance”.
How long has she been dancing?
“To me, dancing has always made me
whole and I believe that if everyone was
passionate about whatever they love
the way I am about dancing, it could
definitely turn each and every life out
there around. I have personally been
dancing since a very young age but
started taking it seriously at the age of
12. That is when I discovered how it
made me feel complete, and from that
moment I started getting into dance
crews at school and in my
neighbourhood and that helped me
become better at what I do”.
What has been her biggest
achievement so far?
“So far, my biggest achievement has
been …
39. my dance classes. I have always wanted to have
a dance school and seeing people come to my
dance classes has just been so mind-blowing and
encouraging. It is really motivating me to do more
about the vision that I have always had as a
dancer. Honestly, organizing the classes wasn’t as
easy for me. I had to spend a lot of time in putting
everything in place and it took up many resources
which I honestly wouldn’t have dreamt of having
when I started all this but to see that it is all
working out puts a smile on my face each and
every passing day”.
What does she plan on doing next?
“My plan for the future is to work with the biggest
and smallest dancers out there and also manage
to work on gigs with big and small brands as well
as an individual brand and then push my dance
classes to another level so that we improve our
enrolment and increase awareness of what I do.
Because all that I truly want is to give other
dancers a chance to grow by teaching them the
little that I know and watching them become better
and work with big brands in future also”.
She didn’t manage to disclose all her plans
for the future but one thing is for sure, she
is not going to play any games in the
oncoming year. So, ladies and gents,
Black Coco is definitely the name that you
should be typing in your search engine
right now. You can find her on Instagram,
Facebook and YouTube as well. She
deserves your support and with the
determination that she has about what she
does, we ware definitely looking at an
African dance legend in the making
straight from our very own streets of South
Africa.
