I have been talking a lot with White people
And I need to decolonise myself
To write about my experience of being
A Gay Asian man
Without reflecting all of myself
In their eyes.
This is “Double Consciousness”…
W. E. B. Du Bois,
An African American writer and philosopher
through the values of the “straight” world;
“Hetero-centric” values: I have been inculcated with This
Seeing the world through a lens riddled with ideas of
Male and Female
Masculine and Feminine
Yin and Yang
In heterosexual union…
But I also have the unique consciousness
of my own homosexual development...
speaks of the Double Consciousness of being black
and American,
A “sense of always looking at one-self
through the eyes of others,
Of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that
looks on in amused contempt and pity.”
As a gay man,
I have the Double Consciousness of knowing and
understanding and being able to see the world
One that sees the potential of union between
Male and Male
Masculine and Masculine
Yang and Yang
Or that there is the inherent “Both-ness” within myself
That I can be Masculine and Feminine
Mummy’s boy and Daddy’s girl
Muscle Stud and Drag Queen...
This Double Consciousness
is both a blessing as well as the eternal curse
of never being able to truly represent myself in a way
that will ever come close to a mainstream
understanding of Authenticity.
I have only this Dance between lenses…
I inhabit multiple worlds
From business boardroom to public toilet
Family gathering to sex club
And all the way, I bring with me
the Fear and the Triumph
Of being so split.
as Other Than Australian,
And being uncertain, therefore
of what right I have to be here,
Though rights be so granted by powerful abstractions
Such as nation-state or local jurisdiction...
The power and freedom to get jobs and retain them
without fear of deportation
While occasionally wondering if
I will be seen truly as Me
And not interchangeable by name with some other
Asian colleague.
Also: I am an Asian man
And an Australian citizen, in an Australian society
that sees me as
International student;
Eternal immigrant;
No matter my ancestry nor my descendants…
While that may change yet, and has indeed changed
for so many Asian communities in Australia before
me and since,
There is this Double Consciousness
Of seeing the world as an Australian,
yet being seen by other Australians
So I am bitter, Yes
As medicine...
I do not carry with me any false humility, No...
I have known strength and power and privilege
and love and acceptance and equality and respect
and True humility.
We may continue to struggle for awhile yet..
Fingers crossed; I forge ahead
until this Truth is easily uncoverable again by All of us
For all the fog of a history
That is still being written.

Get Tested
Do you have different sexual partners?
The more partners you have, the more
often you should get tested for HIV and other
sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Every 3 – 6 months is a good idea if you
are having casual sex.
By knowing your sexual health status,
you and your partners can make informed
choices about the sex you want.
Did You Know?
It is FREE to get tested for HIV and other STIs
in NSW sexual health clinics if you are a gay man.
For more information, look at our directory
at the end of this book.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT
Think ahead! Take care and look
after yourself and your partners
by communicating what you want
and what your limits are.
Respect yourself, your desires,
and your limits.
You have the right to say no.
You have the right to say yes!

I was born in Malaysia. My parents are both
Malaysian-born Chinese also. My mother was
born in a small village and my father was born
in Ipoh. My family moved to Melbourne in
1989 when I was 3 years old. Unfortunately,
I do not speak any other languages but English.
I consider myself Chinese Australian.
When people ask where I am from,
I answer, “I was born in Malaysia. “
Overseas, I answer “Australia.”
Growing up here, I have been blessed to
experience both Eastern and Western cultures.
Every year my family celebrates Chinese
New Year, and by attending schools in
Australia I experienced Christmas and Easter.
My parents always wanted me to finish
high school, go to uni, get a stable job,
make money and work till the day I die.
I know my parents mean well,
but I grew up in a generation where
we were encouraged to try new things.
To do what we love.
They came from a generation where you needed
a good job to live. After I graduated high school
I wanted to study media, while my parents wanted
me to do a business degree. So I compromised.
I did a business arts degree and majored in
Marketing and Media.
I have always been interested in films. Like most
children I grew up in front of the television.
But what I found fascinating were the stories.
I love a strong narrative, being able to tell the
same story in a different and unique way.
That’s what filmmakers do. The first thing that
got me any recognition in the media world was
releasing my web series “Friends and Benefits”.
This 21-part web series tells the story a young
gay man named Ben who lives in Melbourne
and goes online dating looking for love.
I wanted to make a show that
any gay person could relate to.
The series has won the award for Best LGBT Film
at the New Media Film Festival San Francisco
Bay Area 2011. It was also a finalist in the
ALSO Foundation’s ‘Take Care Out There
Film Festival’ in Melbourne’s Midsumma
festival this year.
I moved to Sydney to obtain a role in the film
industry. I currently work for a company
that bonds film and television shows. I have
also started my own independent production
company, ‘Kameo Media’.
I want to show my parents that I don’t need
to have a boring and stable job to be successful.
I can lead a fulfilled life and succeed
by following my dreams.

I grew up in a small town called Ipoh in Malaysia
and moved to Sydney when I was 19 to pursue
my music career.
Since then I’ve released a 4 track EP, completed
an Australian tour last year and recently released
my debut single and music video.
I have always been quite musical. I started
playing the piano and violin when I was 7 and
since I moved to Sydney I fell in love with indie-
pop and electronic music. That’s how I got into
writing and recording my first EP.
I’m a proud Asian hipster who is not afraid
of being seen out and outrageous in public
with a bottle of Tequila.
I think the world would be a better
place if we stop over-analysing things
and just have fun with the things we do.

Asylum Seeker
1 2
As a country that values justice, decency,
and integrity, Australia has a responsibility to
support an international response to refugee
protection that includes a wide spectrum of
initiatives, from addressing root causes of
violence and persecution to providing safety
to people in need of protection.
One of the most important principles of
international human rights law is the principle
of non-refoulement. Under this principle,
countries are bound not to return a person
who has a well founded fear of persecution
or who will face torture or any form of cruel,
inhuman or degrading treatment to their
country of origin. The validity of an asylum
seeker’s claim for protection has nothing to do
with how they arrive in a country – by boat
or by plane – but everything to do with the
persecution they are escaping.
The number of people seeking asylum in
Australia is extremely small compared to
other Western countries and of those who
do seek asylum, the majority of these arrive
on valid visas. Under Australian law, people
are allowed to remain in the community while
their application for a protection visa is being
assessed. It is these individuals and families
who are ASC’s clients.
During the course of many years, the ASC has
advocated strongly along with sector partners
for Australia’s fairer treatment of asylum seekers
and the more efficient processing of their
claims. In 2009–2010 we saw significant
progress in Australia towards legislative and
regulatory reform in a number of policy areas
that affect asylum seekers:
Work rights – on 1st July 2009 the ‘45-day
rule’ was repealed. This regulation denied
work rights and access to Medicare to those
who have been in Australia for more than
45 days before they applied for protection.
Many of those caught by this arbitrary rule
were forced into destitution and ill-health.
The regulation change institutes most welcome
reform for asylum seekers allowing clients the
basic right to self support and decreasing their
reliance on charitable organisations.
Detention debts – on 18th September 2009,
the government abolished immigration
detention debts for asylum seekers. This will
lessen the level of financial disadvantage
experienced by asylum seekers exiting
detention, some of whom have been clients
of the Asylum Seekers Centre.
Further, it is significant to note that since
2008, there has been a rise in the number
of asylum seekers globally. This is due to the
‘push factors’ of continuing violence in
Sri Lanka, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and
Sudan, combined with a lack of protection
for these people within their own region.
In the ongoing debate about asylum seekers,
ASC has an important role in ensuring that
the attention remains focused on human rights,
not on politics.
The current context

The Chancellor’s neo-classic lines are
the signature of renowned architect
and designer Ercole Palazzetti.
Responsible for some of Sydney’s
most exceptional apartment buildings,
The Chancellor adds to Palazzetti’s
impressive portfolio which includes
Villa Porto in New Beach Road,
Darling Point; Dorchester in Macleay
Street, Potts Point; The Georgia in
Kent Street; and 25 Kent Road,
Rose Bay. Exclusive homes for
exclusive suburbs.
Born in Rome, Palazzetti grew up
in an environment rich in the
principles of design and aesthetics,
where practicality and beauty are
recognised in equal measure.
And The Chancellor is testament
to this fine balance. Designed to fit
seamlessly into the existing Double
Bay streetscape, The Chancellor’s
sandstone facade lends a sense of
history to this brand new building.
An elegant colonnade is formed at
street level, with an opulent entrance
furnished in rich tones of stone and
timber inviting you to discover more.
Inside, the interiors of The Chancellor
speak of unparalleled luxury. Each
of the 13 exclusive apartments have
been crafted by Thomas Hamel to
provide contemporary living spaces
within a classical context. As one
of Australia’s foremost interior
designers, Hamel has brought his
international experience, eye for
proportion and unique sense of
style to The Chancellor. Elegant
foyers and large living rooms have
been designed to create a lasting
impression, the perfect setting for
entertaining or simply relaxing.

seamless transition to the outdoors
and extending the living space.
Choose from a range of thoughtful
floorplans with eat-in gourmet
kitchens. And with spacious
bedrooms and luxuriously finished
bathrooms, The Chancellor’s
apartment provide a haven away
from the world, a sanctuary
within the oasis of Double Bay.
Stolen moments by water, reflections of life, reflections of love......
Momenti rubati vicino all ’acqua, riflessioni di vita, riflessioni di amore...
Nestled on the picturesque waters of
Sydney Harbour, Double Bay’s old world
charm is enchanting. From the sandy
beachfront, to romantic tree-lined streets,
to the gleam of boutique shopfronts,
Double Bay has the feel of the European
Riviera yet lies only minutes from the Sydney
CBD. A cornucopia of colour, sounds and
rich textures, Double Bay is one of Sydney’s
most desirable neighbourhoods.
And The Chancellor is Double Bay’s
newest esteemed address.
A new morning, a new beginning...
Una nuova mattina, un nuovo inizio...
Each day is a different journey when
you live at The Chancellor. Be captivated
by a sense of history in Steyne Park, where
the branches of ancient Moreton Bay fig
trees whisper of times gone by. Stroll along
paved streets, window shopping as you go.
Take pleasure in simple things like the
perfect cup of coffee, a daily indulgence
made just the way you like it. Or linger over
a long lunch or dinner with a glass of wine.
Only then will you be living to the rhythm
of Double Bay.
The vision of the Australian Charities Fund is to facilitate
unprecedented levels of giving through the workplace.
Since its establishment in 2003, more than $50 million
has been donated to community organisations through
workplace giving programs facilitated by the Australian
Charities Fund. This has been a great start but we believe
an enormous untapped potential remains to grow this
stream of giving for the benefit of employers, employees
and the community.
About 12 months ago, The Australian Charities Fund
embarked on a groundbreaking research project with
the objective of finding out how employee participation
in workplace giving programs could be increased.
This has involved interviewing and surveying thousands
of individuals about what motivates them to connect to
the community through their workplace. The result is a
wealth of learning and insights we believe will help change
the landscape of workplace giving in Australia.
Importantly, the publication of this report is a beginning
rather than an end. We have significant learning and
insights. We now encourage our employer and community
partners to work with us to move workplace giving to a
new level, for greater community outcomes.
The Australian Charities Fund is proud to have led
this research project and is very grateful for the support
provided to it by ANZ, Bain & Company, the Centre
for Social Impact, Goldman Sachs JBWere and
Mallesons Stephen Jaques.

I am delighted that the Centre for Social Impact has
been a research partner in this important study. It tells
us something new. By showing that the donations made
by employees to charities through payroll deductions are
additional to their existing contributions – and, indeed,
encourage further donations – the true value of workplace
giving is revealed. This evidence should act as a catalyst
to employers, charities and governments to work together
to promote workplace giving as a significant way to fund
community enterprise.

7 in 10 donors said they signed up to workplace giving soon
after being introduced to the program.
this shows the importance of:
• how employers launch their workplace giving program,
• putting the workplace giving program before employees
as soon as possible after they join the organisation,
• timing “The Ask” after communications or presentations
introducing the program; and
• capitalising on the momentum and emotional connection
generated through emergency appeals by seeking to convert
one-off donors to ongoing workplace giving donors.
employees made it clear they did not feel coerced to join their
organisation’s workplace giving program. only 1.9% of donors
said they joined because they felt they couldn’t say no, and
only 3.7% said they joined because “a colleague encouraged
me to participate”.
this suggests there is little ground for the concern among
some organisations’ senior leaders that employees may feel
pressured to donate. It also suggests there is more scope to
use peer champions to build awareness and recruit donors.
When did you join the workplace giving program?
Good intentions: why some donors
are more enthusiastic about
workplace giving
We were interested in identifying how to encourage existing
donors to promote workplace giving within their organisation.
Working with the bain & Company Global Customer Insights
Group, we used the net promoter score® tool (for more
information on nps visit www.netpromoter.com) which looks
at the likelihood someone will recommend a brand, company
or concept to a colleague (or friend). the net promoter
enables us to track groups of customers, or in our case
donors, to measure how their employer’s workplace giving
programs is performing through their eyes.
donors are divided into three categories, based on the
question “How likely would you be to recommend your
organisation’s workplace giving program to a colleague?”
Donors respond on a 0-to-10 point rating scale and and
responded as follows.
1 in 3 Non-Donors Prefer to Donate Outside the Workplace
“You feel much better about your
job when your organisation enables
you to do something worthwhile in
the community. There’s a sense of
pride being involved.”
24 24
“My wife and I had a perception we were quite
charitable. When we looked at workplace giving,
we worked out what percentage of our earnings
went to charity. We were surprised when it was
less than 1%. For us giving through work
or from home as a family wasn’t an either/or
proposition. Workplace giving encouraged
us to realise we could give more.”

For 75% of donors, their total charitable giving has increased
as a result of participating in workplace giving.

“Our baby daughter,
Danielle, was just two
weeks old when we
were given the most
heart wrenching news:
she had an inoperable
brain tumour.
To then be told she
had no more than a
day to live made it even
more unbearable.”
Jennifer Boothby
Dear <salutation>
We are pleased to enclose the December issue of CURE, keeping you up
to date with Foundation’s activities over last quarter.
You’ll get to spend five minutes with a neurosurgeon as well as find out
how much we raised from our recent events includingWalk4Life and
our inaugural Lunch4Life and Golf Day. There is also a calendar of
events to update your diary with such as our Gala Ball on Saturday
4 May and other events that the community are holding to raise funds
to accelerate a cure.
For some children, there’s more to
Christmas than Santa.
Over the holiday season, it’s an opportunity to spend time with our
families and friends celebrating and looking forward to the NewYear
but we also shouldn’t forget how hard this time of the year is for those
families that have a loved one with brain cancer or lost someone to this
devastating disease, especially a child as brain cancer is the no. 1 cause
of cancer-related deaths in children.
One such family is Jennifer and Reece Boothby. At two weeks of age,
their baby daughter Danielle was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer
and Jennifer and Reece were told that Danielle might only have a few
hours to live. Danielle was strong enough to survive a further nine days
and her parents tried to fill those days with a lifetime of love.
So that no other family would have to go through this pain, Danielle’s
parents donated a sample of her brain tissue to a research project that
Professor Phil Hogg is running at the Drug Discovery Centre, UNSW.
This heartfelt donation allows Professor Hogg to test new treatments
to see if they are successful in destroying brain cancer cells without
harming healthy cells and why.

Because Devil Ark is needed immediately,
the holes for the fence posts for the animal
proof perimeter fence are being dug now.
This will prevent the entry of feral animals
and the escape of any Devils. Eight large
pens and twenty traditional style pens
will also be constructed.Additionally,
a food storage room, a food preparation
room and a vet care room will be built
approximately 4 km from the Devils’ site.
the facts
Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD)
has killed over 85% of Tasmanian Devils
and is characterized by horrendous facial
cancers. It is extremely unusual as it is
only one of two recorded cancers that
can spread like a contagious disease.
DFTD is such a virulent and aggressive
cancer that a seemingly unstoppable
epidemic has unfolded in Tasmania.
Building Devil Ark is the Tasmanian
Devil’s only logical chance of survival.
the environment
Nestled high in the Barrington Ranges
in New South Wales at an altitude
of 1,300 metres, Devil Ark is on
500 hectares of fairly flat to gently
sloping land that enjoys a cool climate
with a relatively high rainfall/snowfall.
These environmental conditions are
ideal because they are very similar
to those experienced by the Tasmanian
Devil in its natural habitat.
These distinctive Australian marsupials
will thrive in this environment.

Black Devil
As told by Kevin Bathman
This is my paternal grandfather, Mahalingam Pillai.
He was born and bred in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
His ancestry dates back to small town called Tajavur
in Tamil Nadu district, Southern India.
My paternal grandmother, Ang Ah Hee was adopted
into a traditional Baba Nyonya family. In 1930,
my grandfather met her and they had dated secretly.
He later wooed her into marriage in 1935.
This infuriated my grandmother Ang’s father.
He was against the idea of her marrying an Indian
man with dark skin. He even nicknamed my
grandfather ‘Hak Kuai’, which meant Black Devil.
Vixen Noir is an erotic performance and burlesque artist,
dancer, actress, poetess, singer as well as director,
producer, choreographer, teacher and filmmaker.
She has been wowing audiences internationally with her
sexy jaw-dropping performances for over 17 years.
She integrates her extensive dance and theatre background
to create performances that range from sublime to raucous,
raunchy to seductive, titillating to beautiful, and that are
artistically compelling and visually stimulating.
Her work embodies a commitment to claim erotic power,
build bridges across racial, social and economic divides
and celebrate the diversity of gender expression. Vixen’s
performances are unapologetically sexual and inspire others
to revel in their own sexual power.
One of Vixen’s most notable claims is as founder and
former Artistic Director of liquidFIRE Productions,
a San Francisco-based non-profit organization dedicated
to the authentic representation of lesbians and queer
women of colour on stage (1997 ? 2006). She was the
mastermind behind the organization’s theatre company,
The liquidFIRE Project, whose original productions focused
on erotic power; and the always sold-out queer erotic
cabaret, WET, which featured strip, burlesque, poetry,
performance art, spoken word, comedy and musical acts.
As Artistic Director of Luna Sea Women’s Performance
Project in San Francisco from 1995 to 1998, Vixen produced
and directed several festivals and theatre productions
including Women of Colour Month which featured
Juke Joint, Sistahs Singin’ and the first incarnations of
The Liquid Fire Project; Disputed Territory, featuring
performances that addressed gender identity and the
sex work industry; and the 1996 production of
Skin: the Black and White of It in which African American
and White lesbians explored racism.
In 2001, Vixen created the workshop series, Unleash Your
Fire, designed to empower women to awaken, reclaim and
celebrate their ‘erotic power’ through the medium of erotic
performance. In 2008, after years of refining UYF methods
and to further her goals of empowering women in their
sexuality all over the world, Vixen created Unleash Your Fire
Erotic Performance Academy for Women, which offers
seasonal courses. Vixen has facilitated workshops
throughout the USA and Australia.
Most recently, Vixen toured her one-woman show,
Sweet Deliverance in Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and
Brisbane) February - March 2009; she is the co-producer
and co-host of Cabaret D’Nude, a queer girl and trans strip
joint; and the founder and director of Unleash Your Fire
Erotic Performance Academy for Women. She is also
working on her full-length narrative film, Unlikely Soul.

what is naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a holistic system of medicine which views the patient’s
immediate health and wellbeing alongside other factors in their life
such as diet, exercise and stress management. Treatments address
the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.
Naturopathy emphasises preventative healthcare and encourages
patient participation in the healing process. Naturopathic treatment
aims to restore health and wellbeing by stimulating the body’s own
ability to heal itself using a variety of natural treatments.
about the consultation
At the first consultation an extensive medical history is taken,
including your previous health history, family and social history
and details of your diet and lifestyle.
Once a case is established, a complete healthcare plan will be
formulated. Follow up consultations are usually in fortnightly or
monthly intervals. This will depend on the condition being treated
and the method of treatment used.
Gerard has met the stringent requirements
set by Medibank Private to become a
Members Choice Provider. This guarantees
Medibank members a significant discount off the price of consultations
and higher rebates. Rebates are available for members of all other
eligible private health funds.

Image by Simon le GAM, Alert by Shinen Wong I have been talking a lot with White people And I need to decolonise myself To write about my experience of being A Gay Asian man Without reflecting all of myself In their eyes. This is “Double Consciousness”… W. E. B. Du Bois, An African American writer and philosopher through the values of the “straight” world; “Hetero-centric” values: I have been inculcated with This Seeing the world through a lens riddled with ideas of Male and Female Masculine and Feminine Yin and Yang In heterosexual union… But I also have the unique consciousness of my own homosexual development... speaks of the Double Consciousness of being black and American, A “sense of always looking at one-self through the eyes of others, Of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity.” As a gay man, I have the Double Consciousness of knowing and understanding and being able to see the world One that sees the potential of union between Male and Male Masculine and Masculine Yang and Yang Or that there is the inherent “Both-ness” within myself That I can be Masculine and Feminine Mummy’s boy and Daddy’s girl Muscle Stud and Drag Queen... This Double Consciousness is both a blessing as well as the eternal curse of never being able to truly represent myself in a way that will ever come close to a mainstream understanding of Authenticity. I have only this Dance between lenses… I inhabit multiple worlds From business boardroom to public toilet Family gathering to sex club And all the way, I bring with me the Fear and the Triumph Of being so split. as Other Than Australian, And being uncertain, therefore of what right I have to be here, Though rights be so granted by powerful abstractions Such as nation-state or local jurisdiction... The power and freedom to get jobs and retain them without fear of deportation While occasionally wondering if I will be seen truly as Me And not interchangeable by name with some other Asian colleague. Also: I am an Asian man And an Australian citizen, in an Australian society that sees me as International student; Eternal immigrant; No matter my ancestry nor my descendants… While that may change yet, and has indeed changed for so many Asian communities in Australia before me and since, There is this Double Consciousness Of seeing the world as an Australian, yet being seen by other Australians So I am bitter, Yes As medicine... I do not carry with me any false humility, No... I have known strength and power and privilege and love and acceptance and equality and respect and True humility. We may continue to struggle for awhile yet.. Fingers crossed; I forge ahead until this Truth is easily uncoverable again by All of us For all the fog of a history That is still being written. • 8. MODEL: JOSé. Image by SAM LIM. UNDERWEAR: 2EROS Get Tested Do you have different sexual partners? The more partners you have, the more often you should get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Every 3 – 6 months is a good idea if you are having casual sex. By knowing your sexual health status, you and your partners can make informed choices about the sex you want. Did You Know? It is FREE to get tested for HIV and other STIs in NSW sexual health clinics if you are a gay man. For more information, look at our directory at the end of this book. Know Your Status MODEL: KEVIN & PETER. Image by SAM LIM. SWIMWEAR: 2EROS LET’S TALK ABOUT IT Think ahead! Take care and look after yourself and your partners by communicating what you want and what your limits are. Respect yourself, your desires, and your limits. You have the right to say no. You have the right to say yes! Image by EDMUND EDWARDS I was born in Malaysia. My parents are both Malaysian-born Chinese also. My mother was born in a small village and my father was born in Ipoh. My family moved to Melbourne in 1989 when I was 3 years old. Unfortunately, I do not speak any other languages but English. I consider myself Chinese Australian. When people ask where I am from, I answer, “I was born in Malaysia. “ Overseas, I answer “Australia.” Growing up here, I have been blessed to experience both Eastern and Western cultures. Every year my family celebrates Chinese New Year, and by attending schools in Australia I experienced Christmas and Easter. My parents always wanted me to finish high school, go to uni, get a stable job, make money and work till the day I die. I know my parents mean well, but I grew up in a generation where we were encouraged to try new things. To do what we love. They came from a generation where you needed a good job to live. After I graduated high school I wanted to study media, while my parents wanted me to do a business degree. So I compromised. I did a business arts degree and majored in Marketing and Media. I have always been interested in films. Like most children I grew up in front of the television. But what I found fascinating were the stories. I love a strong narrative, being able to tell the same story in a different and unique way. That’s what filmmakers do. The first thing that got me any recognition in the media world was releasing my web series “Friends and Benefits”. This 21-part web series tells the story a young gay man named Ben who lives in Melbourne and goes online dating looking for love. I wanted to make a show that any gay person could relate to. The series has won the award for Best LGBT Film at the New Media Film Festival San Francisco Bay Area 2011. It was also a finalist in the ALSO Foundation’s ‘Take Care Out There Film Festival’ in Melbourne’s Midsumma festival this year. I moved to Sydney to obtain a role in the film industry. I currently work for a company that bonds film and television shows. I have also started my own independent production company, ‘Kameo Media’. I want to show my parents that I don’t need to have a boring and stable job to be successful. I can lead a fulfilled life and succeed by following my dreams. CHRISTOPHER Image by EDMUND EDWARDS I grew up in a small town called Ipoh in Malaysia and moved to Sydney when I was 19 to pursue my music career. Since then I’ve released a 4 track EP, completed an Australian tour last year and recently released my debut single and music video. I have always been quite musical. I started playing the piano and violin when I was 7 and since I moved to Sydney I fell in love with indie- pop and electronic music. That’s how I got into writing and recording my first EP. I’m a proud Asian hipster who is not afraid of being seen out and outrageous in public with a bottle of Tequila. I think the world would be a better place if we stop over-analysing things and just have fun with the things we do. DYAN

  • 27. Contents Who we are and what we do? 3 ASC’s vision, mission and values 11 Our goals for 2010 – 2013 13 How will we evaluate our success? 19 “It was the only place I had to go – they were the only friendsI had. I knew no one in Australia. I came everyday.” Asylum Seeker 1 2 As a country that values justice, decency, and integrity, Australia has a responsibility to support an international response to refugee protection that includes a wide spectrum of initiatives, from addressing root causes of violence and persecution to providing safety to people in need of protection. One of the most important principles of international human rights law is the principle of non-refoulement. Under this principle, countries are bound not to return a person who has a well founded fear of persecution or who will face torture or any form of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment to their country of origin. The validity of an asylum seeker’s claim for protection has nothing to do with how they arrive in a country – by boat or by plane – but everything to do with the persecution they are escaping. The number of people seeking asylum in Australia is extremely small compared to other Western countries and of those who do seek asylum, the majority of these arrive on valid visas. Under Australian law, people are allowed to remain in the community while their application for a protection visa is being assessed. It is these individuals and families who are ASC’s clients. During the course of many years, the ASC has advocated strongly along with sector partners for Australia’s fairer treatment of asylum seekers and the more efficient processing of their claims. In 2009–2010 we saw significant progress in Australia towards legislative and regulatory reform in a number of policy areas that affect asylum seekers: Work rights – on 1st July 2009 the ‘45-day rule’ was repealed. This regulation denied work rights and access to Medicare to those who have been in Australia for more than 45 days before they applied for protection. Many of those caught by this arbitrary rule were forced into destitution and ill-health. The regulation change institutes most welcome reform for asylum seekers allowing clients the basic right to self support and decreasing their reliance on charitable organisations. Detention debts – on 18th September 2009, the government abolished immigration detention debts for asylum seekers. This will lessen the level of financial disadvantage experienced by asylum seekers exiting detention, some of whom have been clients of the Asylum Seekers Centre. Further, it is significant to note that since 2008, there has been a rise in the number of asylum seekers globally. This is due to the ‘push factors’ of continuing violence in Sri Lanka, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Sudan, combined with a lack of protection for these people within their own region. In the ongoing debate about asylum seekers, ASC has an important role in ensuring that the attention remains focused on human rights, not on politics. The current context 9 10 Our core activities The ASC has five full-time equivalent staff and a network of more than 100 volunteers. We provide a broad range of services, delivered in the following program areas: case management: assistance in securing emergency and short-term accommodation, referrals for emergency financial support and legal advice, individual advocacy, and social work support for families and individuals health care: on-site primary health care and physiotherapy, assistance in meeting pharmaceutical costs, referrals for pro bono dental, trauma counselling and other forms of priority specialist health care, and advocacy for fee waivers on emergency hospital procedures development: English, computer and art classes, recreational activities and nutritious lunches employment service: assistance to build skills in resume writing, employment interviews and job readiness as well as identifying and establishing relationships with prospective employers advocacy: aimed at addressing the systemic obstacles our clients encounter and through educating the public about asylum seekers. ASC is a small organisation that works closely with a range of community sector agencies and networks, professional and specialist services and other groups and individuals to build a network of supporters for our clients. We are the only agency in NSW that provides this range of services, case management and advocacy for asylum seekers. 7 8 For information on getting involved or making a donation, please contact the Asylum Seekers Centre Ph: 02 9365-3606 admin@asylumseekerscentre.org.au This publication would not have been possible without the following people and organisations having donated their time and services: Design: Kevin Bathman Photography: Paul Hatton Photography: David Otott Artwork: A.I. Since its establishment in 2003, more than $50 million has been donated to community organisations through workplace giving programs facilitated by the Australian Charities Fund. This has been a great start but we believe an enormous untapped potential remains to grow this stream of giving for the benefit of employers, employees and the community. About 12 months ago, The Australian Charities Fund embarked on a groundbreaking research project with the objective of finding out how employee participation in workplace giving programs could be increased. This has involved interviewing and surveying thousands of individuals about what motivates them to connect to the community through their workplace. The result is a wealth of learning and insights we believe will help change the landscape of workplace giving in Australia. Importantly, the publication of this report is a beginning rather than an end. We have significant learning and insights. We now encourage our employer and community partners to work with us to move workplace giving to a new level, for greater community outcomes. The Australian Charities Fund is proud to have led this research project and is very grateful for the support provided to it by ANZ, Bain & Company, the Centre for Social Impact, Goldman Sachs JBWere and Mallesons Stephen Jaques. Edward Kerr Chief Executive Officer The Australian Charities Fund November 2009 54 I am delighted that the Centre for Social Impact has been a research partner in this important study. It tells us something new. By showing that the donations made by employees to charities through payroll deductions are additional to their existing contributions – and, indeed, encourage further donations – the true value of workplace giving is revealed. This evidence should act as a catalyst to employers, charities and governments to work together to promote workplace giving as a significant way to fund community enterprise. Peter Shergold Macquarie Group Foundation Professor Centre for Social Impact November 2009 Foreword © the australian Charities Fund 16 17 7 in 10 donors said they signed up to workplace giving soon after being introduced to the program. this shows the importance of: • how employers launch their workplace giving program, • putting the workplace giving program before employees as soon as possible after they join the organisation, • timing “The Ask” after communications or presentations introducing the program; and • capitalising on the momentum and emotional connection generated through emergency appeals by seeking to convert one-off donors to ongoing workplace giving donors. employees made it clear they did not feel coerced to join their organisation’s workplace giving program. only 1.9% of donors said they joined because they felt they couldn’t say no, and only 3.7% said they joined because “a colleague encouraged me to participate”. this suggests there is little ground for the concern among some organisations’ senior leaders that employees may feel pressured to donate. It also suggests there is more scope to use peer champions to build awareness and recruit donors. When did you join the workplace giving program? Good intentions: why some donors are more enthusiastic about workplace giving We were interested in identifying how to encourage existing donors to promote workplace giving within their organisation. Working with the bain & Company Global Customer Insights Group, we used the net promoter score® tool (for more information on nps visit www.netpromoter.com) which looks at the likelihood someone will recommend a brand, company or concept to a colleague (or friend). the net promoter enables us to track groups of customers, or in our case donors, to measure how their employer’s workplace giving programs is performing through their eyes. donors are divided into three categories, based on the question “How likely would you be to recommend your organisation’s workplace giving program to a colleague?” Donors respond on a 0-to-10 point rating scale and and responded as follows. 1 in 3 Non-Donors Prefer to Donate Outside the Workplace “You feel much better about your job when your organisation enables you to do something worthwhile in the community. There’s a sense of pride being involved.” 24 24 “My wife and I had a perception we were quite charitable. When we looked at workplace giving, we worked out what percentage of our earnings went to charity. We were surprised when it was less than 1%. For us giving through work or from home as a family wasn’t an either/or proposition. Workplace giving encouraged us to realise we could give more.” Key partners supported by For 75% of donors, their total charitable giving has increased as a result of participating in workplace giving.

For some children, there’s more to Christmas than Santa. Over the holiday season, it’s an opportunity to spend time with our families and friends celebrating and looking forward to the NewYear but we also shouldn’t forget how hard this time of the year is for those families that have a loved one with brain cancer or lost someone to this devastating disease, especially a child as brain cancer is the no. 1 cause of cancer-related deaths in children. One such family is Jennifer and Reece Boothby. At two weeks of age, their baby daughter Danielle was diagnosed with a terminal brain cancer and Jennifer and Reece were told that Danielle might only have a few hours to live. Danielle was strong enough to survive a further nine days and her parents tried to fill those days with a lifetime of love. So that no other family would have to go through this pain, Danielle’s parents donated a sample of her brain tissue to a research project that Professor Phil Hogg is running at the Drug Discovery Centre, UNSW. This heartfelt donation allows Professor Hogg to test new treatments to see if they are successful in destroying brain cancer cells without harming healthy cells and why. His ancestry dates back to small town called Tajavur in Tamil Nadu district, Southern India. My paternal grandmother, Ang Ah Hee was adopted into a traditional Baba Nyonya family. In 1930, my grandfather met her and they had dated secretly. He later wooed her into marriage in 1935. This infuriated my grandmother Ang’s father. • 57. Vixen Noir is an erotic performance and burlesque artist, dancer, actress, poetess, singer as well as director, producer, choreographer, teacher and filmmaker. She has been wowing audiences internationally with her sexy jaw-dropping performances for over 17 years. She integrates her extensive dance and theatre background to create performances that range from sublime to raucous, raunchy to seductive, titillating to beautiful, and that are artistically compelling and visually stimulating. Her work embodies a commitment to claim erotic power, build bridges across racial, social and economic divides and celebrate the diversity of gender expression. Vixen’s performances are unapologetically sexual and inspire others to revel in their own sexual power. One of Vixen’s most notable claims is as founder and former Artistic Director of liquidFIRE Productions, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization dedicated to the authentic representation of lesbians and queer women of colour on stage (1997 ? 2006). She was the mastermind behind the organization’s theatre company, The liquidFIRE Project, whose original productions focused on erotic power; and the always sold-out queer erotic cabaret, WET, which featured strip, burlesque, poetry, performance art, spoken word, comedy and musical acts. As Artistic Director of Luna Sea Women’s Performance Project in San Francisco from 1995 to 1998, Vixen produced and directed several festivals and theatre productions including Women of Colour Month which featured Juke Joint, Sistahs Singin’ and the first incarnations of The Liquid Fire Project; Disputed Territory, featuring performances that addressed gender identity and the sex work industry; and the 1996 production of Skin: the Black and White of It in which African American and White lesbians explored racism. In 2001, Vixen created the workshop series, Unleash Your Fire, designed to empower women to awaken, reclaim and celebrate their ‘erotic power’ through the medium of erotic performance. In 2008, after years of refining UYF methods and to further her goals of empowering women in their sexuality all over the world, Vixen created Unleash Your Fire Erotic Performance Academy for Women, which offers seasonal courses. Vixen has facilitated workshops throughout the USA and Australia. Most recently, Vixen toured her one-woman show, Sweet Deliverance in Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane) February - March 2009; she is the co-producer and co-host of Cabaret D’Nude, a queer girl and trans strip joint; and the founder and director of Unleash Your Fire Erotic Performance Academy for Women. She is also working on her full-length narrative film, Unlikely Soul. ABOUT Vixen Noir
