TITLE: Effect of liming to the growth performance of maize planted at UiTM
            sharefarm.

OBJECTIVE:
                         • To study the effect of varying lime rate to the growth
                             performance of maize.
                         • To study the effect of varying lime rate to the soil pH.
                         • To fulfill the requirement for the assessment of Soil
                             Management subject.

THEORY/LECTURER REVIEW:
Influence of pH on Nutrient Availability and Microbial Activity
   • soil pH has significant effect on soil chemical properties and biological activities
   • In strongly acidic soils, the availability of micronutrients (Fe,Mn, Zn, Cu, and Co)
is increased by low soil pH, even to the extent of toxicity to higher plants and or
       microorganisms.
   • In slightly to moderate alkaline soils, Mo and all the macronutrients (except P) are
amply available, but levels of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Co are so low that plant
       growth is constrained.
   • P and B are less available in alkaline soils, commonly to deficiency level
   • Thus, it is difficult to generalize about pH-nutrient relationship, however, it
appears that the range of 5.5 to 6.5 or 7.0 may provide the most overall
       satisfactory plant nutrient level.
DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREA:
  • Location and acreage = UiTM sharefarm (DPIM 04), 10,000 m².
  • Soil description: soil series, terrain classes (pedu undulating), soil suitability
       classification (PEDU SERIES/2, 2nd).
  • Limitations of soil for growing crop:
       • 2= classes moderate
       • N= nutrient imbalance:
           • Serious = CEC < 5 meq/100gm soil
           • Moderate = CEC 5-10 meq/100 soil
           • Minor = CEC > 10-15 meq/100 soil
   • d= drainage
           • Serious = very poorly to somewhat poorly drained
           • Moderate = imperfectly to somewhat imperfectly drained
           • Minor = moderately well drained.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

  a) Crop description: variety, date of planting, planting distance. Managing the crop: quantity
of maize seed required, fertilizing (as recommended), organic matter application, control
of weeds, type of pest management, time of harvesting etc.

           • Variety : Hybrid No 5, Masmadu dan Thai Super Sweet
           • Date of planting : 16 august 2010
           • Planting distance : 1 x 1.5 feet
           • Soil suitability classification
                 • 2nd
                 • 2= class moderate
                 • N= nutrient
                 • D= drainage
Determination of soil pH
b) Plot design/Field layout: Randomized complete block design the most popular
experimental design used for crop research, the randomized complete block design,
groups treatment plots together and randomizes them within replicated blocks.

ii. 0.5 metric ton limestone/ ha
iii. 1.0 metric ton limestone/ ha

d) Parameter and data collection
a. pH of soil after liming for each block (altogether 9 blocks)

                   • How could be taken the pH: based on the soil sample.
                          • Firstly, take some soil sample by each bed.
                          • Put it into the bag plastic and bring to lab.
                          • Test the soil sample by using the pH tester.
                          • Record the data.

                   • When
                           • After planted the crop in period of time 2 months more.
                           • During the end of crop will be harvested.

           b. The height of maize crop each block taken randomly.

                   • Each of bed was taken in amount of 3 height of maize.
                   • The height will be got from base of crop to shoot of crop.

DISCUSSION :

   A. Graph of pH versus rate of the liming

From this graph, when applied liming of 0 tan metric / ha it will get 5.16

When applied liming of 0.5 tan metric / ha it will get 5.58

When applied liming of 1.0 tan metric / ha it will get 6.61

So that, the difference of applied liming it will be changed either increased or decreased
       of pH.

   B. Graph of average height of maize versus rate of liming

From this graph, when applied liming of 0 tan metric / ha it will get 121.11

When applied liming of 0.5 tan metric / ha it will get 86.7

When applied liming of 1.0 tan metric / ha it will get 109.4

So that, the difference of applied liming it will be changed either increased or decreased
       of height.

CONCLUSION :

To sum up, we have done our researched during on studies in part 4 at share farm and we
know that our soil is 4.5 pH, after applied liming on the soil have many difference we got
the result. In addition, soil need to application of liming on direct to the soil when the soil
is become most acidity.

  • 3. AGR 201 SOIL MANAGEMENT TITLE: Effect of liming to the growth performance of maize planted at UiTM sharefarm. OBJECTIVE: • To study the effect of varying lime rate to the growth performance of maize. • To study the effect of varying lime rate to the soil pH. • To fulfill the requirement for the assessment of Soil Management subject. THEORY/LECTURER REVIEW: Influence of pH on Nutrient Availability and Microbial Activity • soil pH has significant effect on soil chemical properties and biological activities • In strongly acidic soils, the availability of micronutrients (Fe,Mn, Zn, Cu, and Co) is increased by low soil pH, even to the extent of toxicity to higher plants and or microorganisms. • In slightly to moderate alkaline soils, Mo and all the macronutrients (except P) are amply available, but levels of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Co are so low that plant growth is constrained. • P and B are less available in alkaline soils, commonly to deficiency level • Thus, it is difficult to generalize about pH-nutrient relationship, however, it appears that the range of 5.5 to 6.5 or 7.0 may provide the most overall satisfactory plant nutrient level.
  • 4. DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREA: • Location and acreage = UiTM sharefarm (DPIM 04), 10,000 m². • Soil description: soil series, terrain classes (pedu undulating), soil suitability classification (PEDU SERIES/2, 2nd). • Limitations of soil for growing crop: • 2= classes moderate • N= nutrient imbalance: • Serious = CEC < 5 meq/100gm soil • Moderate = CEC 5-10 meq/100 soil • Minor = CEC > 10-15 meq/100 soil • d= drainage • Serious = very poorly to somewhat poorly drained • Moderate = imperfectly to somewhat imperfectly drained • Minor = moderately well drained. MATERIALS AND METHODS: a) Crop description: variety, date of planting, planting distance. Managing the crop: quantity of maize seed required, fertilizing (as recommended), organic matter application, control of weeds, type of pest management, time of harvesting etc. • Variety : Hybrid No 5, Masmadu dan Thai Super Sweet • Date of planting : 16 august 2010 • Planting distance : 1 x 1.5 feet • Soil suitability classification • 2nd • 2= class moderate • N= nutrient • D= drainage
  • 6. b) Plot design/Field layout: Randomized complete block design the most popular experimental design used for crop research, the randomized complete block design, groups treatment plots together and randomizes them within replicated blocks. Plot design 25 ‘ 0 metric ton limestone / ha (0.0 kg/ block) 0 0.5 ‘ 0.5 metric ton limestone / ha (0.40 kg/ block) 1.0 metric ton limestone / ha (0.80/kg block) 0 metric ton limestone / ha (0.0 kg/ block) 0.5 metric ton limestone / ha (0.40 kg/ block) 1.0 metric ton limestone / ha (0.80 kg/ block)

  • 11. DISCUSSION : A. Graph of pH versus rate of the liming From this graph, when applied liming of 0 tan metric / ha it will get 5.16 When applied liming of 0.5 tan metric / ha it will get 5.58 When applied liming of 1.0 tan metric / ha it will get 6.61 So that, the difference of applied liming it will be changed either increased or decreased of pH. B. Graph of average height of maize versus rate of liming From this graph, when applied liming of 0 tan metric / ha it will get 121.11 When applied liming of 0.5 tan metric / ha it will get 86.7 When applied liming of 1.0 tan metric / ha it will get 109.4 So that, the difference of applied liming it will be changed either increased or decreased of height. CONCLUSION : To sum up, we have done our researched during on studies in part 4 at share farm and we know that our soil is 4.5 pH, after applied liming on the soil have many difference we got the result. In addition, soil need to application of liming on direct to the soil when the soil is become most acidity.
