Gymnasium of Agia Varvara
2. General Information
• Agia Varvara Gymnasium began its
operation in January 1993.
• It’s a regional school (20 ‘ from
Nicosia the capital)
• Students(pupils) from the
following communities(regions)
come to school by bus on a daily
basis:
• Agia Barvara,
• Lythrodontas,
• Mathiatis,
• Alhambra,
• Sia,
• Korno,
• Mosfiloti and
• Pyrga
• Οur school currently has 410
students and 62 teachers.
3. Secondary education in
Cyprus(12 to 18 years old)
• Gymnasium -> 12 to 15
years old
• Lyceum 16 to 18 years
old
• Students in Gymnasium study
15 subjects
• In Lyceum students must
choose their preparatory areas
for university entrance.
That’s why they choose the
subjects they study such Math,
Computers, Physics, English,
Economics, ..
4. PLACES(ORGANIZATION) AT
SCHOOL AND RULES
• It’s a public school (State school)
• Gymnasium -> Secondary school
• Students aged 12 to 15
• 3 grades (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
• Mandatory subjects (Modern Greek,
Math, Physics, Computers, Art,
Gymnastics, Music, Biology, Physics,
Biology, Religion, Science, Home
Economics, Geography, English, French,
Ancient Greek, History, Geography)
• At the end of a school year students
take exams only in Science, History,
Math and Modern Greek Language
• Compulsory use of uniform
• Textbooks and bus service are free to
students
• Same tests for all students for each
teacher
5. Students daily routine
• School lessons start at
7:30 and finish at 1:35.
• Each teaching period lasts
from 40 to 45 minutes.
• 3 breaks (20’, 15’ and 10’)
• 20 to 25 students per
class
• Students go to school five
days a week, from
Monday to Friday
6. EVALUATION
• 2 semesters:
• 1st of September - 11th January
• 12th of January – end of May
• At least one test per semester
• Daily homework and assignments
• Final Exams In June on the following subjects:
• 1st Graders: Modern Greek, Math, History,
Biology
• 2nd and 3rd Graders: Modern Greek, Math,
History, Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology)
• Same final exams for all the students
• Fail students have extra classes in June and take the
exam again
• Teaching staff meetings and evaluation sessions:
during the breaks

12. Competences acquired
by Luis Ibanez
• He observed different methodologies and teaching techniques that
afterwards he had the possibility to apply within the framework of
his school and specially his class.
• He was able to compare the two educational systems of Spain and
Cyprus and draw conclusions regarding different ways of teaching
and organizing the time and space.
• The Perifereiako Gymnasio Agias Varvaras is a very innovative school
in terms of ICT with all the necessary equipment to make an
effective use of new technologies, something really useful for Luis
subject.
• The coordinator in Cyprus, Christos Papachristodoulou is an
eTwinning ambassador who has deep knowledge of different
platforms and webpages such as Kahoot!, Stepmap or Mentimeter,
from which Luis broadly benefited.
• He has improved his communicative competence in English and
learned some basic vocabulary in Greek as well as some cultural
aspects.
