Bike share systems complement and extend public transportation networks by providing affordable last-mile connections, attract new riders including women, and lead to reductions in car use and improvements in safety. In the UK in 2016, there were 17 cities with bike share programs totaling over 17,000 bikes that provided over 10 million trips to over 450,000 unique riders, with growth outside of London at 48%. Bike sharing introduces reluctant riders to cycling and has economic and health benefits for communities.
