2. What is Gender???
Gender is a system of differentiating nouns and pronouns as one the
following:
I. Masculine
II. Feminine
III. Common
IV. Neuter
3. Masculine Gender
Masculine Gender-A noun or pronoun that refers to a MALE
character or member of a species.
Examples include the following:
*Helpful Hint-Masculine, like Male, begins with the letter “M”
Boy Man He Brother Bull
Him Lion Actor King Hero
4. Feminine Gender
Feminine Gender-A noun or pronoun that refers to a FEMALE character or
member of a species.
Examples include the following:
*Helpful Hints-Feminine, like Female, begins with the letter “F”
If a noun has a suffix (ending) of –ess, -ine, or –ette, it is Feminine
Girl Woman She Sister Cow
Her Lioness Actress Queen Heroine
5. Common Gender
Common Gender-A noun or pronoun that can either be female or male
Examples include the following:
Helpful Hint-If you can use the word to apply to a man AND woman, it is a
common noun/pronoun
Parent Child Student Servant Friend
Cousin Member Teacher They Them
6. Neuter Gender
*COMMON MISCONCEPTION*-THIS DOES NOT MEAN NEUTRAL
Neuter Gender-A noun or pronoun that is neither female nor male
Examples include the following:
Helpful Hint-If it is lifeless, it is a neuter gender
