1. Chinese Revolution of 1911
• Led by Sun Yat-sen that made China more Westernized in an effort to
gain power and boot out the Europeans and Japanese.

2. Three Principles of the People
• Promoted by Sun Yat-sen that included nationalism, socialism, and
democracy.

3. Kuomindang (KMT)
• Political party established by Sun Yat-sen and later the ruling party of
China under Chiang Kai-shek.

4. Chiang Kai-shek
• Successor of Sun Yat-sen that established the KMT as the ruling party
of China.

5. Chinese Civil War
• War between the KMT and Communists in China.

6. Mao Zedong
• Leader of the Communists during the Chinese Civil War and founder
of the People's Republic of China.

7. Republic of China
• Another name for the island of Taiwan once established by the KMT.

8. People's Republic of China
• The largest communist nation in the world located in mainland China.

9. Great Leap Forward
• Implemented by Zedong in which huge communes were created as a
way of catapulting the revolution towards its goal of a true Marxist
state.

10. Cultural Revolution
• Instituted by Zedong to erase all traces of a Western-influenced
intelligentsia.

11. Tiananmen Square Massacre
• The Chinese government opening fire on demonstrators in
Tiananmen Square calling for democratic reform.
