MRS. CHRISTINE ANN LYNE V DE CASTRO
Corona Virus Disease 2019
COVID-19
The first human cases of COVID-
19, the disease caused by the
novel coronavirus causing
COVID-19, subsequently named
SARS-CoV-2 were first reported by
officials in Wuhan City, China, in
December 2019. Retrospective
investigations by Chinese
authorities have identified human
cases with onset of symptoms in
early December 2019..
While some of the earliest
known cases had a link to a
wholesale food market in
Wuhan, some did not. Many
of the initial patients were
either stall owners, market
employees, or regular visitors
to this market.
Environmental samples taken from
this market in December 2019
tested positive for SARS-CoV-2,
further suggesting that the market
in Wuhan City was the source of
this outbreak or played a role in
the initial amplification of the
outbreak. The market was closed
on 1 January 2020
Coronaviruses are common in
certain species of animals, such as
cattle and camels. Although the
transmission of coronaviruses from
animals to humans is rare, this new
strain likely came from bats, though
one study suggests pangolins may
be the origin.
Some reports trace the earliest
cases back to a seafood and
animal market in Wuhan. It may
have been from here that SARS-
CoV-2 started to spread to
humans.
What is a
CORONA
VIRUS?
A coronavirus is a
kind of common
virus that causes
an infection in
your nose, sinuses,
or upper throat.
How it Spreads
SARS-CoV-2 spreads
from person to
person through close
communities.
When people with COVID-19
breathe out or cough, they
expel tiny droplets that
contain the virus. These
droplets can enter the mouth
or nose of someone without
the virus, causing an infection
to occur
The most common way
that this illness spreads is
through close contact
with someone who has the
infection. Close contact is
within around 6 feet.
Droplets containing the virus
can also land on nearby
surfaces or objects. Other
people can pick up the virus
by touching these surfaces or
objects. Infection is likely if the
person then touches their
nose, eyes, or mouth
A study shows that SARS-
CoV-2 can last for several
hours on various types of
surfaces:
 Copper: 4 hours
 Cardboard: up to 24 hours
 Plastic or stainless steel: 2
to 3 days
That’s why it’s
important to disinfect
surfaces to get rid of
the virus.
The main symptoms include:
 Fever
 Coughing
 Shortness of breath
 Trouble breathing
 Fatigue
 Chills, sometimes with shaking
 Body aches
 Headache
 Sore throat
 Congestion
 Loss of smell or taste
 Nausea
 Diarrhea
HIGH FEVER
TIREDNESS
DIFFICULTY BREATHING
DRY COUGH
INFOGRAPHICS
The body temperature can
exceed 37.3 Celsius degrees
The body feels completely
tired, without energy
Breathing actually feels
more difficult
Constant coughing without
expelling any mucus
The virus can lead
to pneumonia, respiratory
failure, heart problems, liver
problems, septic shock, and
death
Many people infected with
COVID-19 show mild symptoms,
especially during the first stages
of the disease. Thus, you can still
catch the disease from an
infected person who only has a
mere cough and does not feel ill
ASYMPTOMATIC
PEOPLE
Coronavirus
Diagnosis
Call your doctor or local health
department if you think you’ve been
exposed and have symptoms like:
 Fever of 100 F or higher
 Cough
 Trouble breathing
A swab test is the most common
method. It looks for signs of the
virus in your upper respiratory
tract. The person giving the test
puts a swab up your nose to get
a sample from the back of your
nose and throat. That sample
usually goes to a lab that looks
for viral material, but some
areas may have rapid tests that
give results in as little as 15
minutes.
Coronavirus Risk
Factors
Anyone can get
COVID-19, and most
infections are mild.
The older you are,
the higher your risk
of severe illness.
You also a have higher chance
of serious illness if you have one
of these health conditions:
Chronic kidney disease
Chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD)
A weakened immune system
because of an organ
transplant
Obesity
Serious heart conditions
such as heart failure or
coronary artery disease
Sickle cell disease
Type 2 diabetes
Coronavirus
Prevention
Take these steps:
Wash your hands often
with soap and water or
clean them with an
alcohol-based
sanitizer. This kills viruses
on your hands.
Practice social
distancing. Because you
can have and spread the
virus without knowing it,
you should stay home as
much as possible. If you
do have to go out, stay at
least 6 feet away from
others.
Cover your nose and
mouth in public. If you
have COVID-19, you
can spread it even if
you don’t feel sick.
Wear a cloth face
covering to protect
others.
Don’t touch your
face. Coronaviruses can
live on surfaces you
touch for several hours. If
they get on your hands
and you touch your eyes,
nose, or mouth, they can
get into your body.
Clean and disinfect. You can
clean first with soap and water,
but disinfect surfaces you touch
often, like tables, doorknobs,
light switches, toilets, faucets,
and sinks.
 Eat healthy foods and take
vitamins
How can you
help stop the
spread of the
coronavirus?
Because the virus
spreads from person to
person, it’s important
to limit your contact
with other people as
much as possible. and
avoid large gatherings.
The following terms have now become
commonplace:
 Social distancing or physical
distancing, keeping space between
yourself and other people when you have
to go out
 Quarantine, keeping someone home and
separated from other people if they might
have been exposed to the virus
 Isolation, keeping sick people away from
healthy people, including using a separate
“sick” bedroom and bathroom when
possible
LETS ALL FIGHT
CORONA VIRUS…
THANK YOU FOR
LISTENING…
Cover your mouth and your
nose with your bent elbow or a
tissue when coughing
Seek medical attention if you
have difficulty breathing and a
high fever
Follow the directions of your
national or local health
authorities
Wash your hands with an
alcohol-based sanitizer or with
soap and water
Keep a distance of at least 1
meter between yourself and
anyone who coughs or sneezes
Try your best not to touch your
eyes, your nose and your
mouth
PROTECTING YOURSELF AND PREVENTING THE SPREAD
OF THE DISEASE
PROTECTION MEASURES FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE IN OR
VISITED INFECTED AREAS
01 02
Stay home if you do not feel well, even if
you feel mild symptoms such as headaches,
slight fever and a runny nose
If you need to go out (for example, to buy
food or supplies), wear a mask to minimize
the risk of infecting others
03 04
If you have difficulty breathing and/or a
high fever, seek medical advice as soon as
possible
Call your provider and inform them of any
recent travel, especially to countries with
reported cases
● Before wearing a mask, wash your hands with an alcohol-based
disinfectant or with soap and water.
● Cover your mouth and nose with the mask and make sure the mask is
firmly pressed against your face.
● Do not touch the mask while you are wearing it; if you do, wash your
hands with an alcohol-based disinfectant or with soap and water afterward.
● Replace the mask as soon as it gets wet and do not reuse disposable
masks.
● Remove the mask from behind (do not touch its front side); throw it away
in a closed container and then wash your hands with an alcohol-based
disinfectant or with soap and water.

That sample usually goes to a lab that looks for viral material, but some areas may have rapid tests that give results in as little as 15 minutes.
