3. CIRCLE OF CIRCUMSTANCE
Standing
with your
crush in an
elevator.Entering a party
on your own and
standing around
with no one to
talk to.
Saying goodbye to
someone, and then
realizing he is going
the same direction as
you.
Meeting somebody
you hate in the
hallway.
Accidentally
touching hands
with a stranger
in a bus.
4. S O N N E T 2 9
B Y G E O R G E S A N T A N AYA
What riches have you that you deem me
poor,
Or what large comfort that you call me
sad?
Tell me what makes you so exceedingly
glad
Is your earth happy or your heaven sure?
I hope for heaven, since the stars endure
And bring such tidings as our fathers had.
I know no deeper doubt to make me
mad,
I need no brighter love to make me pure.
To me the faiths of old are daily bread;
I bless their hope, I bless their will to
save,
And my deep heart still meaneth what
they said.
It makes me happy that the soul is
brave,
And, being so much kinsman to the
dead,
I walk contented to the peopled grave
5. COMPREHENSION
QUESTIONS
What does the opening line mean?
Who is being addressed by the poet?
Why does the poet considers the faiths of old his daily
bread?
What makes the persona happy?
6. GENERALIZATION
The persona is happy and contented despite his
inadequacies. In life, others might be rich in material
possessions but impoverished in spirit. The persona humbly
recognizes his need for God and receptivity to God’s
provision of spiritual being in himself. He then finds
satisfaction in seeking His kingdom first.

9. LET’S EVALUATE!
Give the r hy me sche me of the poe m.
The Bludgeoning of Circumstance
It struck me hard, yet I’m not dead
I’ll only forge beyond ahead
And never lose my ground, my stance
To bludgeoning of circumstance
It stuck its blade, it tried to kill
And let blood drip from my heart’s will
But through my soul was slightly bent
To bludgeoning of incident
10. Never did I to it give in
Instead I forged ahead to win
At last it struck with sharp his lance
And took me down, this circumstance
And let me bleed, its shrill laughter
My woes, my thoughts of dole after
Belittled me to nothing more
Till I dropped wan and cold and sore
11. Yet gave up, ne’er before I’ve done
And tried I to rise like morn’s sun
And with my light I veered from sight
All circumstance and dark its, might
And then I stood up and with my blade
I did knick-knack and brought the fate
That long I waited ever thence
The death of darkest circumstance.
