So, you’ve chosen to homeschool. It’s a great
choice! But, whether you’ve been down the
homeschool road one month or two decades, I have a
simple but important question for you:
Are you homeschooling in faith?
The question is intended to get beyond whether
or not there is faith in God generally present in
your life and into the specific of whether or not
the homeschooling of your children is being
motivated and driven by faith. Abraham is a
clear example in Scripture of someone with
great faith. Yet even in the life of Abraham, we
find instances of faithlessness. (Genesis 16:1-3
recounts one example.)
I suggest that the question is an important one
because according to Hebrews 11:6, it is impos-
sible to please God without faith. You probably
won’t be shocked to hear me say that I believe
that homeschooling is a good thing. In fact, I
believe that homeschooling has the potential to
provide a better context for the Christian dis-
cipleship of children than any other education model
out there. But just as with any other area of life, if it is
not done in faith, it won’t please God.
There are so many areas of life that we could put
under the microscope. But for now, we will stick
with homeschooling. Let’s consider some contrasts
between faith-filled and faith-less homeschooling.
Faith-filled homeschooling is an expression
of faith-filled obedience to the commands of
God regarding the discipleship of our chil-
dren and is motivated and driven by trust and
reliance on the power and promises of God.
Faith-less homeschooling is an exercise of a formula
or system that is expected to produce academic,
moral, and even spiritual success in the lives of our
HOMESCHOOLING
Faith-Filled
children apart from dependence on the supernatural
power of God.
Faith-filled parents see homeschooling as an oppor-
tunity to model a lifestyle of faith and to provide an
environment for the Spirit of God to work as the Word
of God is taught through the day. Faith-less parents
see homeschooling as a means to achieve some end
apart from trusting God.
When the going gets tough, faith-filled parents
persevere in joy because they are relying on the
faithfulness of God, not their own. Faith-less parents
either become controlling in an attempt to fix things,
or they walk away in disappointment.
Faith-filled parents are able to be humble, repen-
tant, and transparent before God and their children
because they are secure in the forgiveness, love, and
cleansing found in the gospel. Faith-less parents
struggle to to be ‘real’ by not being honest with God
and their children.
Faith-filled parents ask and expect God to do great
things in their lives and the lives of their children,

even when things seem impossible. Faith-less
parents align their expectations with their own limited
abilities or cultural norms.
Faith-filled parents can sleep at night because the
results are in God’s hands. Faith-less parents are
filled with anxiety and worry until they break.
Ultimately, faith-filled parents please God
through their homeschooling efforts. Faith-
less parents don’t.
Do you see any signs of faith-less homeschooling
in your home? Let’s not forget that we are sur-
rounded by a great cloud of witnesses of those who,
through faith, conquered kingdoms, enforced justice,
obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
and educated their own children. Therefore … let
us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith
(Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV).

TIME AS THIS
You Have Been
Put Here for Such a
I have been
homeschooling my
kids for almost two
decades now, and we
have an art/music/
library/spare room
that also functions as
a schoolroom. Taped
around the room,
near the ceiling, is
a timeline of world
history.
My husband, Jay, and I have always explained
to our children that history is something worth
digging into, because history is more than just
a series of dates on a timeline. History is really
HIStory — God’s story — the unfolding of the
Master’s plan. We only get to witness about
.001 percent of it, but we can appreciate the rest
through the rearview mirror.
There are a lot of important dates and people on our
timeline: the birth of Christ, the reign of Napoleon,
world wars, the Holocaust, and the great revivals.
Look closer and you’ll see images of Beethoven,
missionary Gladys Aylward, and President Ronald
Reagan. There’s even a little sticker that celebrates
the birth of the United States.
And in 1967, nestled between the appointment of the
first African American Supreme Court Justice and the
assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy, God did
something amazing in the life of the St. John family.
In 1967, God decided it was time for Jay St. John to
become part of HIStory. And so, on a cool October
day, Jay was born into the care of his mom and dad,
Lou and Jerry St. John. Not too much later, in 1970,
God determined that it was time for me to become
part of HIStory. In 1989, our two lives became one,
and HIStory continued to unfold as we became
parents ourselves.
We learn a lot together in our little schoolroom, but
one of the most important things I want our children
to know is the role they play in God’s story. God’s
purposes are eternal, and each child He gives us, like
Esther, has been born “for such a time as this.”
I want each of my seven children to know that God
put them on this earth with a unique purpose. Their
births were no less significant in God’s economy
than the birth of George Washington or Elisabeth
Elliot. Their lives are precious, and I want them to
know why. I want our children to learn about men and
women who followed God (and those who rejected
him) throughout history, because I want them to see
that they (my children) are just as much a part of
God’s story as anyone else whose picture graces our
worn-out timeline.
So why tell you about my tattered and yellowed time-
line? Because in order for us to train our children for
their own journeys of faith, we need to see ourselves
on the continuum of HIStory. God is always at work:
and He has placed you right here, right now, for such
a time as this — to help prepare your children for the
war that lies ahead!
Make no mistake: in the midst of homework
assignments, chores, and the seemingly
mundane conversations you have every day
with your children, you are preparing war-
riors — warriors who will be asked to answer the
tough questions culture is asking, asked to give an
answer for the hope that lies within them (see 1 Peter
3:15). You are preparing warriors who at some point
will be asked to choose between following God’s law
and following the culture. And in order to prepare
warriors, you have to become a warrior yourself.

FAMILY ENCOURAGEMENT
8. “Mom, Dad — we
need to talk….”
And then our beloved
child, the one we’ve
spent the past umpteen
years loving, nurturing,
and, yes, homeschooling,
delivers the news no
parent wants to hear.
Maybe he has been caught
shoplifting. Maybe she
is pregnant. Maybe she
won’t be homeschooling
your grandchildren. Maybe
he no longer believes.
Whatever it is, you realize
that life is not turning out
as you had planned for
this child of your heart.
you still love him. You still want God’s very best for
him. You cannot help him work through this new
difficulty in his life if you let this present challenge
destroy your relationship with him.
Don’t make it about you. Your initial response
may be to say, “How could you do this to me?” or
“What will our friends think?” This is about your
son or daughter whom you love unconditionally, by
God’s grace. Your concern needs to be about your
child, not about your reputation. If not, then deal
with the pride you find in your own heart.
Realize that your child is a sinner. It should
not be a shock to realize that the truth of Romans
3:23 applies even to your precious child. He is
indeed a sinner, just like you. He will make choices
that disappoint you, just as you make choices that
disappoint your Father.
Pray. Pray for your child. Pray for your spouse.
Pray for your other children. Pray for your child’s
grandparents. Pray for yourself. Pray for everyone
who will be impacted by your child’s sin. Pray when
you first learn about this sin and pray in years to
come for total and complete healing and restoration
and protection from recurrence.
Most homeschooling parents assume, whether con-
sciously or unconsciously, that if they homeschool
their children, everything will turn out right with
their child. After all, we protected him from ungodly
influences in textbooks and television. We encour-
aged wholesome friendships. We taught him God’s
Word. We poured our lives into this child who now
stands before us, saying things we never thought we
would hear.
Our response at this moment will impact our relation-
ship with this son, this daughter, for the rest of their
lives. It will test our ability to see beyond the present
moment of shock and into the heart of our child.
So, what should you do when things don’t turn out
as you had hoped?
Guard your words. In moments of shock it is easy
to burst out with words of recrimination and anger.
Set a guard before your mouth (Psalm 141:3-4).
What you say at this time will likely be remembered
long after the emotions of the moment have cooled,
for better or for worse.
Protect the relationship. Regardless of what
your child has done and how betrayed you feel,

FAMILY ENCOURAGEMENT
10. We hope our readers will be
encouraged by this interview
with the Bob and Debbie
Fine family of Elizabeth,
Colorado. Below, Debbie
shares about their journey of
homeschooling. Bob manages
a successful real estate
company, Hallmark Properties,
while Debbie manages their
home and school.
INTERVIEW WITH THE FINE FAMILY
PLEASE SHARE SOME
BACKGROUND OF HOW YOU
MET, MARRIED, AND DECIDED
TO HOMESCHOOL.
ABob and I were wholeheartedly
convinced that we wanted to homeschool
our children before we married. We met while
attending Kansas State University where I was
studying Early Childhood Education. As we
were growing in our own love relationships
with Jesus, we simultaneously experienced the
secular worldview hundreds of young, future
public school teachers were receiving. We knew
that we could not submit our children to such a
godless (often anti-God) system. We became
very excited about providing a life and educa-
tion for our children where we could keep Christ
central, allowing for them to learn everything with the
foundation of God’s Word.
WHEN YOU FIRST BEGAN
HOMESCHOOLING, WHAT WERE
YOUR GOALS, AND HAVE THEY
CHANGED OVER TIME?
AOur heart’s desire was that in the end, our
children would most importantly know and love
Jesus with all their heart, mind, and soul. Over the
years, that main goal has not changed. However, we
as parents have grown and changed while traversing
the many hills and valleys we had to cross to reach
our desire.
AS YOUR FAMILY GREW, WHAT
CHANGES DID YOU MAKE TO
YOUR FAMILY’S DAILY ROUTINE?
AAs a new family with 2-3 young children,
life was sweet and full, but it was manageable. As we
continued to add children to our family the “manage-
ability” became less, at least in our own strength. I
am thankful that I learned on a deeper level that my
hope, my joy, and my ability to “manage” as a mother
was dependent on Jesus. He was my lifeline and the
only place I could go for the real strength needed for
the path ahead. He grew us in love, patience, flex-
ibility, and most importantly, faith. The faith in a God
so good and so all-sufficient is the faith that would
help us to not just survive, but also to thrive, in the
challenges that were yet to come.

11. that any good could result from it. God continually
assured me that we were “made for this!” As a result,
we got to watch Him unfold a story so beautiful that
we could never have written it ourselves, a story that
wove things into our children’s hearts that blew our
wildest imaginations. It changed every single one of
us to the core!
My family rose to the occasion and continued the
homeschooling and life routines at home. The
older children schooled the younger children. They
solved problems and grew in love for one another,
all the while knowing they were joining in the fight
for Charlie’s life. We were a team. A team with a
mission. They were never bitter or even tempted to
wish Charlie had never come so that they could have
mom at home and life would be easier. They were
a part of something bigger than themselves; they
valued Charlie’s life and knew we were going to do
everything we could for him.
Their love for Charlie was precious, unconditional,
and in the end so incredibly inspiring. Inspiring be-
cause Charlie was with us for only 18 months, then
we had to let go. We spent what would be his last
few days with him at home, with Charlie in our arms,
rocking, crying, singing to him, praying over him,
kissing his plump lips, saying goodbye, telling him
how brave he was, stroking his
fluffy hair, describing heaven,
holding his chubby hands,
weeping, thanking God for him
… we had to let go. We had
to let go of an amazing little
lion-hearted Charlie who had
stolen our hearts and changed
our lives. We had to let go
of a boy we really wanted to
keep, to do life with. The love
we had for him was deep and
wide and deeper still. The
inspiring part was to watch
all nine of our children
let go of what had grown
to be one of the most
valued things in their lives.
Moreover, to trust him to
a God they knew loved
WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES
YOU FACED WITH YOUR SON,
CHARLIE.
ACharlie Grant, our tenth child and sixth son,
entered this world via home birth in September of
2015. He was a beautiful and seemingly healthy little
fellow. A few days after his birth I told my husband
that the Lord was impressing on my heart to walk
“arms wide open,” ready to embrace and walk in
whatever God put before me with courage, strength,
and dignity. The next morning, our five-day-old
Charlie began showing signs of distress, and we
rushed him to the hospital ER, hoping it was just a
virus (but feeling it wasn’t).
It was there that we learned that Charlie likely had
Down Syndrome along with some complications that
are common to that diagnosis. The hospital staff gave
us the option to stop giving him medical interven-
tion based on this information. We opted to fight for
Charlie’s life. His diagnosis didn’t change anything
for us. We loved him just the same, and we knew
that he was fearfully and wonderfully made. After
nearly losing him in the ER due to complications from
treatment, we were life-flighted to the local children’s
hospital where Charlie and I would live in the NICU
for the next 11 months. Yes, this threw a wrench into
our homeschooling “plan.” This was not what I had
pictured nor desired. At times I wept over missing
my husband and other nine children, and I grieved
over what, at times, felt like (with the naked eye) a
wrecked life.
AS YOU CONTINUED TO
HOMESCHOOL, HOW DID
CHARLIE’S BRIEF LIFE CHANGE
YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN?
AIt was suggested to us that it was the perfect
time to put our children into public school. I can see
where that would have made sense to some parents.
However, we are instructed in 2 Corinthians 5:7 to
walk by faith, not by sight. Knowing public school
was not God’s plan for our family, we continued
to homeschool by faith and under very strenuous
circumstances. Sometimes it felt so strenuous that
I wasn’t sure if I could physically survive it nor see
Charlie even more than we did! Our God who is good,
sovereign, and trustworthy. It was inspiring.
WHAT WORDS OF
ENCOURAGEMENTS DO YOU
HAVE FOR FAMILIES WHO ARE IN
THE MIDDLE OF A MAJOR TRIAL?
AOh dear family, if you are in the middle of a
major trial then live “ARMS WIDE OPEN!” Arms wide
open to a God that loves you, knows your trial, has
counted your tears, and has plans to use this for your
greatest good! Don’t waste this trial by listening to
your weak flesh and believing the naked eye, because
they both lie to us; I know this for certain! Don’t settle
for surviving this trial, rather see it as an opportunity
for a major upgrade in your faith and an opportunity
for our King to be glorified!
James 1:12 (NIV) states, Blessed is the one who
perseveres under trial because, having stood the test,
that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord
has promised to those who love him.

LEAD
FATHERS:
Ionce read a secular
study in which
children were asked
what they thought was
the most important
academic subject.
It turned out that their answers reflected
whatever subject with which their father helped
them. The reason given was that children as-
sume, since dad is busy, if he is going to take
time out of his schedule to help with one subject
THAT must be the most important one.
What this indicates to me is the power of a fa-
ther’s influence. Most of us men work jobs. We
are busy. However, we can make a tremendous
impact on our children if we are strategic in
passing on what is most important.
What’s a Dad to Do?
There are two responsibilities that the Bible
seems to lay nearly exclusively at the feet of
fathers:
▪ Training and instruction of children
(Proverbs 4:1, Ephesians 6:4)
▪ Discipline (Deuteronomy 8:5, Proverbs 13:1,
24, 15:5, Hebrews 12)
For about six years, I served as a volunteer chaplain
for a county juvenile center here in Michigan. Of the
several hundred incarcerated young men that I have
interviewed, only one or two said that they had a
good relationship with their father. The overwhelming
majority had NO connection with, nor had even met,
their biological fathers. Anyone who has worked in
a prison will tell you that the lack of a positive father
relationship is almost absolute in violent offenders.
The influence of a father cannot be underestimated.
My Approach
In my home, I take initiative to make sure that I am
leading family worship daily (or as frequently as pos-
sible) and that I am staying abreast of my children’s
spiritual, academic, and emotional progress. I make
sure that I have “conversations that count” with each
of them, drawing them out and probing them with
age-appropriate questions to see if they have assimi-
lated what they have been taught and are developing
biblically informed convictions from the information
they have received.
When I stand before God, He will hold ME account-
able for the spiritual training of my children. I can’t
hide behind my wife and say, as Adam tried, “This
woman You gave me ... she didn’t know what she
was doing!” No, I am responsible. The buck stops
with me. I am thankful that my wife is a wonderful
helpmeet and that she implements well the spiritual
blueprints that I am providing for our family, but her
role is to come alongside and support the vision that
I have received from the Lord and His Word. It’s time
for us men to grow up and take responsibility for our
own families. There is absolutely no valid excuse to
do otherwise.

BY CAROLYN MARTIN
Celebrating 30 Years of the Colorado Homeschool Law
Today,
homeschoolers
don’t fear being out
in public during the
hours when public
school is in session.
I doubt that any of us has a plan of escape in
case someone from the state knocks on our
door. If we experience any trouble from the
local school district, a lawyer is just a phone
call away. Not so for the pioneers who paved
the way of freedom for us in Colorado many
years ago.
Homeschoolers in Colorado have much
to celebrate in 2018. The law that protects
families from intrusive government oversight
was enacted on May 10, 1988 – 30 years ago.
The fight to uphold parents’ rights to direct and
provide an education for their children began
with a small group of families across the state
in the 1970s. Before the law, parents were
subjected to the process of seeking approval from
the State Board of Education and were often turned
down or forced to use state-approved curricula.
They faced the real threat of truancy charges being
brought against them with the possibility of jail time.
Yet, they stood steadfast in the belief that God’s di-
rectives are higher than man’s law. God favored their
cause, and today, we celebrate the 30th anniversary
of the Colorado Homeschool Law.
Remember
Don’t be fooled by the ease of being able to
homeschool today! The battle over who controls
your children is still raging. If we forget what has oc-
curred in the past, we will easily be led back to living
under the yoke of government dictates. The Bible is
full of examples of the consequences of forgetting
who God is, what He has commanded, and what He
has done.
In Psalm 105, the Lord reminds us to proclaim,
to rejoice, to seek, and to remember. Our best
weapon in countering darkness and bondage is our
dependence on Him and His ways. As we thank God
for the mercies and the protection He has bestowed
on homeschoolers in Colorado, it is imperative that
we actively remember and rejoice over all that He
has done and the miracles He has performed on our
behalf.
Give praise to the Lord, proclaim His name; make
known among the nations what He has done. Sing
to Him, sing praise to Him; tell of all his wonderful
acts. Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those
who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and His
strength; seek His face always. Remember the won-

My older sister and
I were blessed to be
homeschooled by our
parents first in Arizona,
then in Colorado. When
I was just starting
school, my dad began a
family business so that
we could spend more
time together.
After completing our textbook studies each day,
my sister and I were encouraged by our parents
to explore many hobbies. We also started small
home-based businesses ourselves and helped
my dad in his endeavors, one of which was a
downtown hot dog stand!
During my ‘tween years, Dad would take me to
help him get his food cart set-up for the day and
assist with lunchtime sales. When he didn’t need
my help, I would do my schoolwork on Denver’s
16th Street Mall at an outdoor table adjacent to
his cart. On bad weather days, I did schoolwork
in a coffee shop near his cart, so he could
keep an eye on me through the window! It was a fun
experience and I learned a great deal about business,
customer service, and the hard work that goes into
being self-employed. An even more exciting aspect
involved selling hot dogs and other items at a large
venue where my dad and grandfather had a contract
to supply food for youth sporting tournaments. We
served a lot of meals and had a great time working
hard, then coming home exhausted from a profitable
day.
One of the most important things I learned from my
homeschool/family economy childhood was that
school and work are both good and important, but it
is the time in between learning and working that is the
most meaningful through the years. The memories
we made as a family – often with my grandparents,
sometimes with family friends – when we went fishing
in the mountains on weekends, worked on improve-
ments to our small acreage homestead, or just flat out
had a great time talking and laughing with each other
were the best parts of our flexible schedule and family
life. As I approached adulthood, I tinkered with many
things as a possible career, but I knew that working
for myself was going to be an important part of my life.
Currently, I operate a company that provides a
variety of videography services for several different
industries, including advertising and independent
filmmaking. I love what I do, mostly because of the in-
novative equipment I get to use, as well as the people
I work with and the places I get to travel for business.
I can hardly believe that I have already been to the
countries of Belgium, England, France, and Scotland,
in addition to traveling throughout the United States.
Just think – I get paid for work while traveling!
Between the opportunity to be home educated, Dad’s
decision to start a family business, my parents’ will-
ingness to spend their free time together as a family,
and the outlets for creative expression I found through
hobbies, my childhood gave me a strong start for my
current profession. I am thankful for God’s hand on my
life and the experiences provided by my parents. We
remain close-knit, helping each other out where and
when we can, and look forward to the future God has
for us as individuals and as a family.

27. Your Country Needs You!
You can be an integral part of the fight for freedom by attending your Precinct
Caucus on March 6th and volunteering to become a delegate to the State Assembly.
Stand for Constitutional principles!
It is important to vote in November, but when you attend your Caucus and become
a State Assembly delegate you give your vote an incredible force multiplier.
If you attend your Precinct Caucus you will be on the ground floor of determining
the primary ballot, the general election, and ultimately, who is elected.
Only a small percentage of all registered voters attend their party’s Precinct
Caucus. If ten people attend the caucus in a precinct of 500, those ten have
multiplied the power of their vote as much as 50 times. For those who go on to be
delegates, particularly the State Assembly, they make their vote even more powerful.

Over the past 18
years of helping
homeschooling
families, I have spoken
with numerous parents
concerned about
their child’s lack of
progress. Most had
already searched
blogs, Facebook
groups, and websites
trying to figure out
what was wrong.
Some tried comparing their child to a list
describing certain learning difficulties (such as
dyslexia, dysgraphia, or Asperger’s), but since
most students do not display all the “symptoms”
shown, the parent was still in a quandary! They did
not have the answers they needed.
agnosis through more extensive and specialized testing.
Going forward, those test results will guide us toward
the best and most appropriate care and treatment.
Please understand: I believe the model for decision
making used in healthcare should apply when determin-
ing the root of your child’s learning challenge! A label
is merely the name of a specific problem – it
cannot lead to a solution. A diagnostic evaluation,
on the other hand, has many benefits. It will uncover the
root of your child’s learning problem and will illuminate
what has been limiting your child’s progress. It also will
reveal how to incorporate his strengths into your in-
struction. The diagnosis equips you to choose the most
effective teaching approaches and suitable instructional
materials! In many cases, a diagnosis relieves the
child’s anxiety about his continued feelings of failure.
Without an accurate diagnosis of your child’s learning
issues, you are likely to waste money on inappropriate
(and often expensive) therapies, textbooks, or programs
that are a poor match for your child’s needs. A delay in
seeking out a specialist for my husband’s care would
have allowed his health to decline. In a similar way,
a delay in seeking a diagnostic educational evalua-
tion wastes time and valuable learning opportunities.
Without appropriate instruction, your learner inevitably
will fall further behind! A frequent consequence of
continuing failure is that too many students incorrectly
conclude they lack intelligence! Another important
Many of my prospective clients express a lack of
self-confidence – both in their knowledge of how to
help the child overcome his difficulties and in their own
teaching skills. Sadly, I often hear a parent say, “I feel
like I am failing my child!” Such feelings seldom reflect
reality – but they arise from a lack of knowledge and
understanding. Unfortunately, despite having all these
uncertainties, some parents choose not to seek a formal
diagnostic evaluation. Why? They do not want their
child to be “labeled.” You, too, may be among those
who have concerns that an evaluation will label your
struggling learner.
Let me explain! There is a huge difference between a “la-
bel” and a “diagnosis.” Here is an analogy. Imagine you
are worried that you have a serious medical condition.
Would you put off seeing a specialist because you feared
he might “label” you? Probably not! You would want a
professional to thoroughly examine you and administer
appropriate tests to obtain an accurate diagnosis that will
indicate the most appropriate and effective treatment.
This example became very personal for me this
summer. My husband had a painless ½” lump on his
neck, and we waited two months for it to resolve on
its own. When his doctor ordered a biopsy, it revealed
lymphoma. My husband is a “cancer patient”. It was a
“label” we did not like, and it did not give us any insight
on what to do! Instead of waiting for him to improve, we
promptly sought a specialist who provided a precise di-

HIGH
SCHOOL?
Homeschool
Through
BY DEB ENTSMINGER
PHOTOGRAPHYBYISTOCK
I was determined
not to do it! Trying
to teach a strong-
willed middle schooler
pushed me to my limit,
and I was resolved not
to homeschool through
high school.
When the Lord kept closing door after door, my
son said, “Mom, I really think God wants me
to be homeschooled for high school.” So we
pressed on … but you better believe I was crying
out to the Lord for help and ideas and the grace
to make it! And did He ever deliver!
At the start of my son Andrew’s junior year, I
happened to hear of a college course entitled
The Bible as Literature. I thought, “If it’s good
enough for college, we can do it for high school!”
So I bought copies of Howard Hendricks’ Living
By The Book, and we started working our way
through this during fall semester, doing the as-
signments at the end of each chapter.
Learning to inductively study the Bible is litera-
ture analysis at its finest!
In the spring we began tackling whole books
(starting with an epistle), applying all we’d
BEST OF CHEC.ORG/BLOG
learned through this course. I can’t even begin to tell
you what a blessing that was in our lives. We were
learning together, seeking to apply God’s Word, shar-
ing the journey together. It not only brought us closer
to the Lord but also drew us closer as a family as my
husband joined in too. What a gift from God!
It helped Andrew learn how to go directly to the Scrip-
tures and study them for himself. What a blessing this
was when he was in college. No longer did he need
to go to a Christian bookstore hoping to find a Bible
study when a topic interested or perplexed him; now
he had the tools to search the Scriptures himself! And
that firsthand discovery is far more impacting than
being told something.
Even more importantly, we learned how critical it is to
apply what you’re learning! Both the wise and foolish
builders heard the Word (Matthew 7:24 – 27). The
difference was what they did with it! As we sought
to be more intentional applying God’s Word to our
daily lives, the difference was profound — for us and
others around us.
That first year of homeschooling high school, Andrew
decided to try out for the soccer team at a nearby
school. The first day of practice was nearly
100 degrees with high humidity, and the coach told
them to run five miles. It was brutal. After throwing up
twice, Andrew was so relieved when he crossed the
finish line. But then he saw one guy who was really
struggling. This guy was overweight and barely able
to put one foot in front of the other. Andrew jumped
up and exclaimed, “Come on guys, let’s go help him!”
And they raced across the field to run the rest of his
miles with him.
For me, that moment highlights how homeschooling
through high school isn’t primarily about academics
or preparing your kids to get into college. Though let
me say, even though we were rather non-traditional in
our homeschooling, Andrew had no problem getting
into college or graduating with honors and landing a
job with one of the top companies in the country.
But in the end, homeschooling is about building
character and laying a foundation for living well and
loving well.
Today there is so much thankfulness in my heart that
God made me do it!

Another great geography game that even younger
kids can play and enjoy is Scrambled States of
America. Do you remember painfully memorizing all
the states and capitals while in elementary school?
This game, based on the popular children’s book by
the same name, takes that pain away. This is a fast
paced and almost zany game that will have your chil-
dren absorbing the name, shape, capitol, nickname,
and location of the states while having a great time.
Timeline is a fun history
game which helps kids learn
the chronology of historical
events. The game has many
different variations including
major world history events,
American history, and the history of inventions. The
idea of the game is to create a timeline of historical
events while each player tries to get rid of their two-
sided cards, which have the event on both sides but
the date on only one side. A random card is turned
date side up in the center of the table. This becomes
the beginning of the timeline. Each player has four
cards in front of them which are date side down. The
art, life science, inventions, and even the kings and
queens of England. The kids
practice memorizing rapidly
and paying close attention to
details while learning some
fascinating facts such as
major natural resources in
Argentina, the year the com-
puter mouse was invented, and the medium Claude
Monet used to paint The Water Lily Pond.
Ticket to Ride is a widely popular game which
is great for geography and map studies. While the
game takes only a few minutes to learn how to play, it
takes many matches to begin to master the strategy
involved. The game consists of building trains
between destinations and earning points along the
way. Ticket to Ride Europe has the players building
railroads across a map of Europe with the European
names of the countries on it. (I was an adult on an
airplane flying to Switzerland when I realized the
rest of the world has different names for European
countries than we use in the USA!). There are numer-
ous expansion packs that can
be purchased so the game
can be played using a map
of Asia, Africa, India, or the
USA. Players cannot help but
When kids are having

place painlessly and
naturally. Most kids
would choose playing
a game over rote
memorization of facts
or reading a textbook.
Thankfully, there are some amazing educa-
tional games which we can incorporate into our
homeschools that make learning enjoyable.
Here are a few games we have used to enhance
learning at our house.
Brain Box (available from Mindware.com) is
a twist on flash cards, turning repetition into a
game. The player takes a card and has 10 sec-
onds to study it. The player then rolls a die and
answers one random question from the back
of the card without looking again at the front. If
the player gets the question correct, he or she
keeps the card. Whoever collects 10 cards first,
wins. Brain Box has games covering a variety
of subjects such as preschool, geography,

the player has placed the
card correctly, it stays on the
timeline. If the placement is
incorrect, the card is discarded and the player takes
another card from the pile. It becomes more and more
difficult to correctly place cards as the timeline grows
longer. The first player to get rid of all their cards
wins. I think it’s invaluable for kids to know when
different historical events occurred such as the slave
trade ending in 1808 and the postage stamp being
invented in 1840.
I knew nothing about fine art when I first began
homeschooling, but I have learned along with my
children, and I’ve found some fun and painless
ways to be introduced to the great masters and their
masterpieces. Dover Publishing has produced four
books in a series called Spot the Difference. Each
book contains 25 side-by-side pictures of famous
works of art. One is the original and the other has
multiple subtle and not so subtle changes made to it,
and the child must find all the differences. The kids
study these paintings closely, and as they search
for changes in these great works of art, they feel like
they’re playing a game rather than working. Another
fun resource for art study is the Go Fish series of
card games produced by Birdcage Press. Players try
to build matches of famous paintings while playing
the classic game of Go Fish. Several different decks
of cards can be used with each
deck focusing on a period of
art such as the Impressionists,
post-Impressionists, modern
artists, or Renaissance. Young-
er players might need to show
each other the card they are
looking for, but the goal is for the player to ask for the
painting by title and artists, “Do you have Merrymak-
ers by Carolus-Duran?” Over time, this information
about the paintings will become memorized.
Some of these games are so much fun that your
children will likely choose to play them during their

free time. But even if they do not, assigning them for
school can be a wonderful way to take a break from
the normal curriculum.
Parents, most of these resources are secular, and
you will need to preview and perhaps modify some
aspects of the game. For example, Go Fish may have
a few cards you consider inappropriate art; simply
remove from the set. Timeline has some evolution-
ary content that we threw out. But in general, these
games can provide a “spoonful of sugar” that makes
learning delightful.

The APPRENTICESHIP, MENTORSHIP,
ENTREPRENEURSHIP Program was created
in 2007. Seeing a need to equip young men and
women as they launched into adulthood, CHEC
created the AME Program. This ministry now pro-
vides networking, training, and workshops, along
with recorded and print materials for individuals
and families who want to pursue Apprenticeship,
Mentorship, and Entrepreneurship as part of their
family economies. Mike Cheney, a homeschool dad,
entrepreneur, and author, is the driving force behind
AME, which is also guided by the CHEC Board of
Directors. Interested in learning more? Check out

PARTNER with CHEC
Together, we’re motivating parents to disciple the next generation of Christians.
Thank you for partnering with us!
BY SHARI HOWARD MCMINN
Regardless of your season in life, CHEC and its
affiliate ministry partners – Generations, AME
Program, and Christian Family Eldercare –
are here to encourage and edify you in your journey.
GENERATIONS enables broader support of both
our vision and mission. In 2003, CHEC began to
sponsor the weekly Generations Radio Program,
hosted by homeschool dad, pastor, and executive
director of CHEC at the time, Kevin Swanson. God
greatly blessed that simple start and Generations
now includes daily broadcasts heard around the
world. A publishing house eventually developed
which has now become a major force in producing
Christian books and curriculum. This ministry is still
overseen by the CHEC Board of Directors. To tune
in to a broadcast or find valuable resources, go to
Generations.org.

For 27 years, CHEC has been at the forefront of the battle for home education and discipleship. CHEC serves thousands of families every year
through our events, Update magazine, widows fund, special needs fund, the CHEC Independent School, and more. We receive phone calls
throughout the week that give us a chance to provide advice, encouragement, and an extra “boost” to homeschoolers when the going is tough.
CHEC depends on your generous donation to both continue and expand our mission.
