Gender and age representations
1. Gender and Age Representations
Gender in magazines
This is a stereotypical representation of gender. The
magazine is Vogue which involves both sexes. The cover is
stereotypical because it includes a man being active and
playing sport, he also has an aggressive expression on his
face which makes him look more masculine. The magazine
also has a woman who is wearing a dress and is being held
by the man to make him look strong. She has a smile on her
face which makes her seem gentler. Because the man is
holding on to her it makes the woman look dependent on him
to keep her up.
This is an anti-stereotypical representation of gender. The
magazine is GQ Style and it features Jaden Smith on the front
cover. This is anti-stereotypical because he is a male and he
is promoting style for men. The expression on his face seems
more sexual in comparison to many other male magazines.
The colours also seem more feminine as they are softer and
the font is an elegant style.
2. Gender in film
This is a stereotypical representation for gender. The film is
called The Little Mermaid. The film is made for females. It
is stereotypical because females are pressured to look
their best all the time and in this film females were praised
for their physical beauty and so they could find love. Often
in this time, females were called daydreamers, this is
because females were never able to do what they wanted
to do as the males were more powerful. In films like this,
the female characters were looking for their true love but
something would always get in their way. However, in
some of the Disney films, they are not portrayed as the
Damsel in Distress, an example of this is when Ariel saved
Flounder from being eaten by a shark.
