3. INTRODUCTION
• An electronic device is called as smart device if it is capable of computing
data autonomously and can establish communication with other devices for
exchanging data .
• Smart energy meter maintains the record of electricity consumption as well as
it is enable of two way communication between customer and service
provider .
4. HISTORY
• In 1972 Theodore Paraskevakas developed a sensor for monitoring
system which is use the digital transmission for security , fire , medical
emergency along with meter reading capability .
• In 1974 he lunched METRTAEK NETWORK , INC. which developed
and provide the first smart meter .
• That was the pre-internet era so they use the 1BM series 1 mini-
computer .
5. PURPOSE & BENEFITS
For utility companies :-
• Easy to match energy consumption and generation in both peak time and low
time .
• Smart meter can easily connect or disconnect the service .
• Customers can pay through internet by reading the meter themselves so the
labour cost is highly reduced .
• Misprint during billing should completely reduced .
• No more energy theft .
6. PURPOSE & BENEFITS
For customers :-
• They should aware about there energy uses so that they can reduce there
consumption .
• Real time pricing encourage people to adjust their consumption habit .
• Payment options like prepaid etc .
• A survey says this system reduce the energy consumption by 7 – 9 % .
• This is a win-win situation for both utility and customer .
7. CRITICISM
• Security :- Cyber attack and energy theft .
Implementing the security protocols .
• Health and safety :- Rf radiation emission .
• Privacy concern :-The respective utility company get know the behavioural
pattern and may they sell the data .
• Over heating :- Occur in few mostly in 1st generation meters .
9. INDIAON SMART METER
• Under Smart Meter National Program (SMNP) the Energy Efficiency
Service of India (EESI) had installed over 5 million smart meters in Delhi ,
UP , Haryana , Bihar and Andhra Pradesh .
• India is trying to setup its efforts to supply 24, 7 power to all and to upgrade
the power grid under which SMNP is a base project .
10. CONCLUSION
• The smart meters are completely safe for domestic as well as commercial use
, as long as they conform the specifications .
• Smart meter is based on IOT technology to fulfil the future demand of
electricity .
• Smart meter is an integral part of smart grid programme .
