Ventilation perfusion ratio is : “The ratio of alveolar ventilation and the amount of blood that perfuse the alveoli”. FORMULA It is expressed as VA/Q. VA is alveolar ventilation Q is the blood ﬂow (perfusion) Normal value of ventilation perfusion ratio is about 0.8 VA is 4.2 L /min Q is 5.5 L/min (Same as Cardiac output) So VA/Q = 4.2/5.5 = 0.8 If VA becomes zero ratio becomes zero If Q becomes zero ratio becomes infinite. If ratio becomes zero or infinite then there is no gaseous exchange. So this ratio indicates the efficiency of gaseous exchange in lungs. In standing or sitting position this ratio is not uniform in all parts of the lungs. In standing position, in upper parts of lungs there is almost no blood flow so normally in upper parts of lungs the ratio is higher may be near 3. In lower part of lungs, there is more blood flow so the ratio is decreased may be 0.6. In certain diseases the VA/Q ratio is higher which means perfusion is inadequate i.e. in some parts of lungs the alveoli are non functional or partially functional. This is seen in cases of pulmonary thrombosis or embolism. When there is higher VA/Q ratio, PO2 and PCO2 in the alveolar air resembles the values in the inspired air. When exchange is not occurring because of lack of perfusion, inspired air goes to alveoli, as there is no exchange occurring so the same values of PCO2 and PO2 as in inspired air.

Normal respiration is spontaneous and unconscious. There are 4 groups of neurons on each side in the Pons and medulla oblongata which are involved in regulation of respiration. These include 1. Medullary centers Dorsal respiratory group of neurons Ventral respiratory group of neurons 2. Pontine centers Pneumotaxic centre Apneustic centre. It contains “I”neurons which are inspiratory neurons. It’s located in dorsal portion of medulla oblongata. It also includes the nucleus of tractus solitarius which is the sensory termination of afferent fibers in 9th ( GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL NERVE) and 10th (VAGUS NERVE) cranial nerves. They receive impulses from peripheral chemoreceptors, carotid and aortic baroreceptors and also other receptors in the lungs. In this group inspiratory ramp signals are produced spontaneously. If we cut the medulla oblongata from other parts of brain and also the afferent nerves which enter the medulla, still inspiratory ramp signals are produced which indicate it’s the inherent property of medulla. Initially the signal is weak and then it progressively increases and then fades away. Each ramp signal’s duration is 2 sec and then for 3 seconds there is no ramp signal. So each cycle lasts for 5 seconds and there are 12 cycles /minute which is the respiratory rate. Significance of the signal in the form of ramp is that it causes progressive expansion of the lungs. After production, these ramp signals are transmitted to the contra lateral motor neurons supplying the inspiratory muscles. Rate and duration of inspiratory ramp signals is controlled by impulses from the Pneumotaxic centre and impulses from the lungs via vagi.

Understanding circumstellar disks is of prime importance in astrophysics, however, their birth process remains poorly constrained due to observational and numerical challenges. Recent numerical works have shown that the small-scale physics, often wrapped into a sub-grid model, play a crucial role in disk formation and evolution. This calls for a combined approach in which both the protostar and circumstellar disk are studied in concert. Aims. We aim to elucidate the small scale physics and constrain sub-grid parameters commonly chosen in the literature by resolving the star-disk interaction. Methods. We carry out a set of very high resolution 3D radiative-hydrodynamics simulations that self-consistently describe the collapse of a turbulent dense molecular cloud core to stellar densities. We study the birth of the protostar, the circumstellar disk, and its early evolution (< 6 yr after protostellar formation). Results. Following the second gravitational collapse, the nascent protostar quickly reaches breakup velocity and sheds its surface material, thus forming a hot (∼ 103 K), dense, and highly flared circumstellar disk. The protostar is embedded within the disk, such that material can flow without crossing any shock fronts. The circumstellar disk mass quickly exceeds that of the protostar, and its kinematics are dominated by self-gravity. Accretion onto the disk is highly anisotropic, and accretion onto the protostar mainly occurs through material that slides on the disk surface. The polar mass flux is negligible in comparison. The radiative behavior also displays a strong anisotropy, as the polar accretion shock is shown to be supercritical whereas its equatorial counterpart is subcritical. We also f ind a remarkable convergence of our results with respect to initial conditions. Conclusions. These results reveal the structure and kinematics in the smallest spatial scales relevant to protostellar and circumstellar disk evolution. They can be used to describe accretion onto regions commonly described by sub-grid models in simulations studying larger scale physics.

Theoretical predictions and observational data indicate a class of sub-Neptune exoplanets may have water-rich interiors covered by hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. Provided suitable climate conditions, such planets could host surface liquid oceans. Motivated by recent JWST observations of K2-18 b, we self-consistently model the photochemistry and potential detectability of biogenic sulfur gases in the atmospheres of temperate sub-Neptune waterworlds for the first time. On Earth today, organic sulfur compounds produced by marine biota are rapidly destroyed by photochemical processes before they can accumulate to significant levels. Domagal-Goldman et al. suggest that detectable biogenic sulfur signatures could emerge in Archean-like atmospheres with higher biological production or low UV flux. In this study, we explore biogenic sulfur across a wide range of biological fluxes and stellar UV environments. Critically, the main photochemical sinks are absent on the nightside of tidally locked planets. To address this, we further perform experiments with a 3D general circulation model and a 2D photochemical model (VULCAN 2D) to simulate the global distribution of biogenic gases to investigate their terminator concentrations as seen via transmission spectroscopy. Our models indicate that biogenic sulfur gases can rise to potentially detectable levels on hydrogen-rich water worlds, but only for enhanced global biosulfur flux (20 times modern Earth’s flux). We find that it is challenging to identify DMS at 3.4 μm where it strongly overlaps with CH4, whereas it is more plausible to detect DMS and companion byproducts, ethylene (C2H4) and ethane (C2H6), in the mid-infrared between 9 and 13 μm. Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of California Irvine Abstract Many data analytics projects have collaborators with complementary backgrounds, including biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists, and AI/ML experts. Many of them have limited experience to code, set up a computing infrastructure, and use MLmodels. Existing tools and services, such as email attachments, GitHub, and Google Drive are inefficient for sharing data and analyses. In this talk, we present an open source system called Texera that provides a cloud computing platform for collaborators to share data and analyses as workflows. After seven years of development, the system has a rich set of powerful features, such as shared editing, shared execution, version control, commenting, debugging, user-defined functions in multiple languages (e.g., Python, R, Java), and support of state-of-the-art AI/ML techniques. Its backend parallel engine enables scalable computation on large data sets using computing clusters. We will show a demo of the system, and present our vision supported by a recent NIH award, dkNET(NIDDK Information Network, https://dknet.org), to serve the diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases research communities through the FAIR sharing of data and knowledge.
