2. Ever heard of a beauty pageant that aims at upliftment of a particular community?
Well, when the objective is so unique, the show has to be different too! For the first
time, Bhubaneswar will play host to a beauty pageant where contestants will not walk
the ramp in fashionable attires but showcase their indigenous cultures.‘Tribal Queen or
Adi Rani’ to be organised at Utkal Mandap on June 24 will witness participants from
various tribes from across the country come together on one platform.
3. This event is being supported by ST/SC Dept. Govt of Odisha in association with State
Tourism Department. Padmashree Tulasi Munda is the ambassador of ‘Adi Rani’ which
nationally works for upliftment of tribal community.
4. Talking about this unique initiative, Chidatmika Khatua, member of the organising
committee said, “This is a one-of-its-kind event that aims to promote that a woman of
substance is much more than just good looks. The main objective of organising such a
big event is to empower tribal women and uplift the exceptionally beautiful tribal
culture.”
5. “So far we have only seen tribal group dances getting promoted across the country
and the globe, but individual talent of tribal people has not yet been promoted. Tribal
women have different sets of talent and they are a true symbol of women
empowerment and that’s what we want to show everyone,” she further added.
6. The proceedings of this beauty pageant will be staged quite differently from the
general ones. There will be no ramp walks or rounds and participants will be
encouraged to arrive in their tribal costumes, while showcasing all the elements which
symbolise their culture. No western or modern costumes and songs will be allowed
during the contest.
7. “The participants have to represent their culture, so everything from their costumes,
food, songs among others will be a reflection of that,” informed Chidatmika.
8. Director of ST/SC Research & Training Center AB Ota, said, “This contest has been
designed to give all the tribal women from across the country a platform to showcase
their special and strong points. We hope to have a good turnout to make this a grand
and successful contest.”
9. With fashion shows using creative and out-of-box concepts which keep getting staged
throughout the nation, it would be interesting to see how this tribal fashion event turns
out to be. The idea is uniquely optimistic and has a potential to deliver a wonderful
message on stage which makes it something to watch out for.
10. Interested participants from India can submit their entry by June 20 at
kalingagaurava@gmail.com before the Semifinal round commences on June 21 at KIIT
Campus, Bhubaneswar.
