A Social Story for Blake

Dedicated to my son, Blake, who helped to write his own social stories
as a child on the autistic spectrum.
Background information:
Blake was diagnosed with PDD-NOS as a five year old child and started
receiving services in kindergarten. He was also receiving gifted
support services by the time he was in second grade. Blake and I
wrote a similar social story for him when he was in second grade and
had to start transitioning to other classrooms with older students for
academics. He also started riding a school bus for the first time.
These additional transitions caused meltdowns and unwanted
behaviors that would continue throughout the entire evening until it
was bedtime. We found blank journals to create his social stories and
we would write them together. I would write down the words, and he
would illustrate the story.

transition from one
place to another. Even
my favorite Pokémon
characters transition
from place to place
when they go on
adventures.

school makes
some students
happy especially
me when I get to
go to lunch or
recess.

transition from school
to home to spend time
with their families.

their Pokémon balls to
compete in matches.

I am learning to like

classroom to other

the end of the day.

when it’s time to
transition and listen to
the teacher or staff
when they say it’s time
