so many doors for me. I now know
I can accomplish anything I want
to and be an inspiration to
other young people.”
ADELE DI BELLA
Adele finished school in Year 10 and
enrolled at the Northern Sydney Institute
not long after. A passion for food, an
eye for patisserie and an eagerness
to succeed saw Adele chase her
dream early.
I studied AND graduated from

The Highlight
“The opportunity to study and compete

life so far.”
My Support
“I honestly couldn’t have achieved
everything I have without the help of my
teachers who have always put in the
extra time to support me since day one.”
My experience
“Having access to the latest industrial
equipment such as gelato machines,
glass freezers and tempering kettles has
not only helped me at work but given
me an advantage over other pastry
chefs in the industry.”

Being my own boss

Evidence includes course transcripts or statement of results. Courses studied
at the Northern Sydney Institute can be automatically applied to your current
enrolment.
»» Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – Skills, knowledge and experience you
have gained outside the formal education system is equivalent to a unit in
the qualification for which you are seeking recognition. Be assessed on work
experience, voluntary work, school experience, life experience or sporting
achievements. The assessment may require a portfolio, practical test,
demonstration, interview or a combination of these.
When do I apply?
The best time to apply for recognition is when you enrol. During your course you can
apply for recognition before the start of any unit, or as soon after starting as possible.
If you are not enrolled in the course, you can apply for recognition at any time
throughout the year, but there is a commercial recognition fee for non-enrolled
students.

Upfront
payment
For all of the Northern Sydney Institute
courses, you can choose to pay the total
amount of your student fee upfront. This
means you pay the full student fee and
any other enrolment related charges
before the commencement of classes.
Payment
plans
To make it easier for you to pay your
student fee, the Northern Sydney
Institute also offers eligible students
simple payment plans so that you
can pay with a number of smaller
instalments.
You are eligible for a payment plan if you
are enrolling in:
»» a government subsidised course
»» a fee-for-service course where the
fee is more than (or equal to) $500.
If you are under 18 years of age you
must apply with a guarantor.
The amount of your first payment
and the frequency or number of
instalments will depend on the course
you are enrolling in and your individual
circumstances.
Third Party
Payment
Some employers will pay training fees
on behalf of their apprentice, trainee or
other employee. This is an agreement
between you and your employer. Your
employer can choose to pay the full fee
upfront, or by a payment plan if eligible.
investing in your career
Fees and payments
When you enrol at
the Northern Sydney
Institute, you will need
to pay a student fee,
unless you qualify for
a fee exemption. The
student fee will vary
depending on the course
you choose, whether the
course is government
subsidised and what
level of subsidy you are
eligible for.
Investment
options
The Northern Sydney Institute offers a
number of options for paying your fees.
You can choose to pay the full amount
upfront or, if eligible, we can set up a
student loan or a payment plan for you. In
some cases, your employer may pay the
fee for you.

FEE-HELP and VET FEE-HELP are
interest-free student loan schemes
introduced by the Australian Government
to assist eligible students to pay tuition
fees for higher level courses. You can
choose to defer all your tuition fees or
pay some of your fees upfront and defer
the balance. Students repay their loans
through the Australian taxation system
once they earn above the compulsory
repayment threshold.
VET FEE-HELP is available for graduate
diplomas, graduate certificates,
advanced diplomas, diplomas and a
limited number of certificate IVs.
FEE-HELP is available for all TAFE NSW
degrees. If you are enrolling in a VET
FEE-HELP or FEE-HELP eligible course,
you will be notified of your student fee
and your first census date and provided
with instructions on how to apply for the
loan.
You will be given details on eligibility and
how to apply for a student loan when
you receive your offer of a place in a VET
FEE-HELP approved course.

chosen course offering. You will be able
to check your eligibility and estimate
your individual fee before entering the
application/enrolment process.
Exemptions
In 2016, if you are eligible for a
government subsidised course, you will
be exempt from paying fees if you are:
»» an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
(students living outside NSW may
also be eligible if they live at identified
postcodes which border NSW).
»» a student with a disability (or a
dependant of a Disability Support
benefit holder).
You will need to fill in a TAFE NSW Fee
Exemption application form when you
enrol. Your eligibility for a fee exemption
will be determined at the time of
enrolment.
Concessions
Concession fees are available in
government subsidised courses up to
certificate IV. There are no concessions
for diploma or advanced diploma
students, who can apply for VET
FEE-HELP loans.
In 2016, if you are eligible for a
government subsidised place, you will
pay the Smart and Skilled concession
fee if you are:
»» a Commonwealth welfare recipient.
The concession fee may also be
available for your dependant, spouse
or partner.
Concession fees apply to the whole
qualification and are a flat fee for each
qualification level. Concession fees for
2016 range from $80 to $240.
When you enrol, you will be asked
to provide your Centrelink Reference
Number (CRN) to validate your eligibility
for a concession fee.
Fee-Free Scholarships
Concession students between 15-30
years old may also be eligible for a
Fee-Free Scholarship. This means you
can complete your study without
paying fees.
Fees for government
subsidised courses
Many of our courses are subsidised by
the New South Wales (NSW) Government
under the Smart and Skilled reforms. This
means that the government will pay part
of the student fee on your behalf and you
pay the balance.
Student fees for Smart and Skilled
subsidised courses have been set by
the NSW Government and will be the
same for all NSW training organisations
offering government subsidised courses.
The Northern Sydney Institute is an
approved Smart and Skilled provider
for over 200 government subsidised
courses in a wide range of industries.
As the State’s public provider, TAFE
NSW also provides subsidised training
and services to specific groups to meet
government priorities. These courses,
including Higher School Certificate
(HSC), Tertiary Preparation Certificate
(TPC) and TAFE-delivered Vocational
Education and Training (TVET), are
funded outside of the Smart and
Skilled reform, so will have different fee
structures. Visit nsi.edu.au/fees
for details.
Who is eligible?
Students will be eligible for government
subsidised training in a Smart and
Skilled course if they are:
»» an Australian or New Zealand citizen,
permanent resident or humanitarian
visa holder AND
»» aged 15 years or older and no longer
at school AND
»» living or working in New South
Wales.
How much will I pay?
How much you will pay for a
subsidised course depends on the
course you choose and your individual
circumstances.
You can estimate your fee for a particular
government subsidised course by
going to the course page on nsi.edu.au,
click on APPLY or ENROL next to your
If you think you are eligible, simply enrol
or apply for the course as normal. Once
your enrolment is submitted and your
age and eligibility for concession has
been verified you will automatically be
granted a fee waiver.
For students not in social housing, the
scholarships will be granted on a first-in,
first-served basis until the state-wide
limit is reached, so be sure to start your
enrolment process as soon as you can.
Apprenticeship and traineeship fees
If you’re starting an apprenticeship or
traineeship, your Smart and Skilled fee
will be capped at a certain amount.
In 2016, apprenticeship fees are capped
at $2,000.
In 2016, subsidised traineeship fees will
not be more than $1,000.
Your employer may be required to
pay the fee for your apprenticeship
or traineeship training, depending on
the relevant industrial award. Ask your
employer if they are responsible for
paying your student fees.
Fees for
non government
subsidised courses
In addition to government subsidised
courses, the Northern Sydney
Institute offers many non-subsidised
qualifications such as degree programs,
specialist short courses, professional
development workshops and selected
qualifications from certificate IV up to
advanced diploma. These courses
are offered on a fee-for-service basis
in accordance with the TAFE NSW
Commercial Services Policy.
Fees for these courses are shown on
each course page on our website. VET
FEE-HELP and FEE-HELP student
loans are available for many higher level
courses, certificate IV and above.

Fees for
international students
International students have different fee
structures. Fees for international courses
can be found within each course
description on our International Student
website nsi.edu.au/international
Temporary visa holders should contact
the campus prior to enrolment to
determine eligibility to study and obtain
details of fees and conditions that
may apply. TAFE NSW will conduct an
audit of your residency status following
enrolment.
Other
charges
When you enrol you may be required
to pay a course related charge (CRC)
in addition to the student fee. Course
related charges cover the cost of
materials, resources, equipment or
services you may need to participate in
your course.
Some courses may also specify
mandatory equipment requirements
(MER) and students must obtain these
to enable participation in classes and/
or completion of the course. Details of
any MER are included with the course
information or are provided during class.
Certain courses may require you to
pay licence or registration fees, wear a
uniform or personal protective clothing or
equipment (PPE) during class. Clothing
must be purchased by the student and
entry to the class will be refused unless
specified protective clothing/uniform is
worn.
If your course has a related charge or
MER you will be advised at enrolment
or you can contact your campus
administration for further information.
Recognition of
prior Learning
You may be able to reduce your fee
by getting your previous study or
experience recognised. Any reductions
to your student fee due to Recognition
of Prior Learning (RPL) or credit transfer
are calculated based on the proportion
of the course that is recognised as
completed according to State Training
Services guidelines.
See page 20 or call us on 131 674 for a
referral to the relevant head teacher or
assessor to discuss your RPL options.

study expenses
When you study at TAFE, you may be
eligible for Centrelink benefits such as
Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance.
Check with Centrelink to find out what
you can claim.
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) may
allow you to deduct expenses for
self-education under certain circumstances.
Information about eligibility for claiming a
deduction is available on the ATO website.
You may also be able to receive student
travel concessions on public transport.
Call us on 131 674 to find out more.
